BackpackingGreat!

Went there in Sept 2020, and the hike was amazing! Though steep, the view at the end was totally worth the climb. We camped overnight at lake 2, and the weather was perfect — warm during the day and not too cold at night. The next day, we ventured out to lakes 3, 4 and 5 which were not too far away. Recommend starting early and packing light if doing a day hike. Would definitely come back again!

Did this today 13Feb21. Gate is closed per earlier reviews. Adds some walking on the pavement to get to the trail head. Was fine in trail running shoes until the cabin. Just got 6 inches of fresh snow so we put snow shoes on at the cabin. Not mandatory, but will def help. Trail gets wonky near the lakes and we found a way, but had to deal with thigh deep snow. Got to lake 2 and it was pretty anticlimactic with all the wind and snow. Super shitty visibility with all the winds. Check the mountain forecast before you go! Bring poles as well. No service so download the map or have a way to plot some grids.

Did this on 2/15/21 and let me tell you it was tough. Snow still pretty thick. Started hiking at 8am, got back to my car by 4pm. Mandatory on the snow shoes if you guys are trying to get to the lakes. There is about a mile hike to the starting point since the parking is closed for the season. Anyone who is not familiar with this place bring a map: i ended hiking 5 miles the wrong way since the trails are covered in snow. No cell signal either. In the end made it about 2 miles before the first lake then decided to turn back since i would be finding myself hiking back in the dark. Definitely going to check this out in the spring or summer.

Hiked this trail yesterday 1/22/21 with my 16lb pup, hands down the most amazing hike I've been on. Amazing views the whole way and the lakes were gorgeous in the snow (did lakes 1 and 2). Very cool experience in winter, but make sure you are prepared for the elements! Traction cleats were needed with ice, and I recommend packing extra layers for you (and for your pet). Wind was pretty strong the whole way, so temperatures were even colder. So glad we got to experience this trail in winter, and hopefully will be back to see it in summer!

HikingGreat!

Man that altitude kicked my butt. made it to 3rd lake, and could have completed the whole thing, but a snow storm swooped in..temps dropped..headed back down. The blue ice on the lake and in the creek was incredible.

Hiking

Trail was amazing. Made it to lake #2. The added two miles back and forth with road closure made us cut our trip shorter. Very icy. Crampons highly recommended. Also if you’re not use to high elevation, take two Advils before the hike to overcome altitude sickness. Amazing views. Literally took pics while standing on the frozen lake. Bucket list hike. Coming back when lakes have defrosted.

We did this trail today 1-16-21! It was so nice to be able to do this trail this time of year. Not that much snow and the weather was great! Didn't need snow shoes at all.

permit reserved online. note that trail is shaded by other mountain peaks for the most part so temps are definitely colder. the hike is an extra 1.5ish miles one way due to road closure. after 2nd waterfall, microspikes recommended but not needed. at the intersection .5 miles from first lake, a running creek is there as water source. extremely windy. no fires on any elevation. microspikes/ snowshoes will definitely help when you go past 2nd/3rd lake. all lakes frozen so pack plenty of fuel to melt snow for water. beautiful!

HikingGreat!Snow

I went yesterday 1/3/21 and it was a beautiful clear sky! There is a road closure about a mile and a half from the trailhead so be prepared to walk that extra stretch! I took crampons just in case but it wasn’t too bad, trekking poles are a must and it’ll help a lot. I went up the the second lake and spent an hour up there. About 13 miles round trip and took me about 5 hours ! Any other questions feel free to ask me or add me on Instagram Diaz.nay7

A lot of snow on 1/1/2021 but the trail was very easy to follow as other people had compacted the snow most of the way. Need crampons or snowshoes. Spectacular view!

Such an incredible trail!! Unparalleled views for pretty much the whole hike. You really need to be prepared for the cold this time of year, but it was surely worth weathering the winds yesterday!! Also can be very icy at times so I highly recommend bringing your hiking poles!!

Breath taking views and beautiful weather, the hike took about 2 1/2 hours to get to the first lake. Dress warm, pack your hiking boots and lunch, as the hike takes about 5-6 hours to complete. Great daytime activity! Not recommended for beginners.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Hike. Going up it may feel quite hard due to elevation. However on the way down. It feels like a miracle as it is extraordinary easy on the way down.

hard, but beautiful views. I will recomend to go early, sun goes down around 4:30. 2nd lake people were ice-skating. weather was chilling but doable if you wearing a light ecoball jacket. lots of patches of ice along the trail. overall amazing. Definitely we coming back. * ( 1st hike for us)

HikingIcy

We went for a day hike on Monday Nov 31, started at 9:00am. At first it felt really cold - wore leggings and sweats, a long sleeve/sweater/jacket with gloves and a hat. An hour into the hike it got hot and I had to peel off layers. It got chilly again when we were resting at Lake 1. The hike was beautiful!!!! It took us 3.5 hrs (5.2miles) to get to lake 1 which was almost completely frozen. Going down was not too steep so it was much easier, took me 2 hours to get back without resting. There are two port-a-potties at the parking lot that weren't too gross. Parking was easy, only 3 other cars there.

The trail is well maintained. We went on Saturday, November 28, 2020. Started at 8:00 am and got back to the car at 4:00 pm. It is strenuous in some parts going up (elevation) but super easy coming back. The views are stunning and marvelous!!!! The creek is beautiful too; had ice and snow.

Beautiful lakes and amazing hike. Steady elevation gain, went clockwise to lakes 1-3 first. Minimal snow (in patches, packed) on Dec 1 2020, easily doable with hiking boots without additional gear. Lakes largely frozen. Did as a day hike from 7:30am - 5:45, with the last 45 min or so with headlights.

Definitely goes into my top 5 California hikes. If you want to experience the Sierra Nevada, it doesn't get much better.
