The homestead Trail was nearly impossible to find. I went out there once before and couldn't find it at all. I went out there second time with my cell phone that had a GPS map on it, and I almost missed it again. My friend and I walked down it a little bit and it's really overgrown. We turned around after about a half-mile because there was a huge spider webs crossing the trail with a huge spider on it. We figured is that was at the beginning of the trail, where most people probably walked, it was just going to get really primitive later on. The Onion Creek Trail, which we did only that loop instead of doing both loops, was nice but a little boring.

excellent trail.

Not so much a hike that we hoped for. Really turned into a 5 mile walk at a good pace for cardio. Pretty surroundings, abundant wildlife , trail was paved the entire way. Nice, clean, safe and plentiful parking. Probably would not go again though.

Great variety of trails but nothing too extreme. Lots of shades trail yet still plenty breezy on windy days. Perfect for family outings.

Easy relaxing walk...would be a great place to go fishing if there were not so many families swimming. The waterfalls were non-existing due to lack of rain. Trail was EASY! Trails were not marked so it was hard to tell which trail you were on. Lots of people. And this was on a Monday afternoon walk.

Nice for a leisurely walk with your pet, decent scenery. Not my favorite of the choices of hiking around Austin, but the falls were nice.

I run this trail frequently. Fairly easy terrain. Not much shade in the summer. Porta-potties at trailhead. Also note: no dogs allowed on or off leash.

Enjoyed this hike. The trails are poorly marked but that is part of the charm. We saw wildlife as we meandered through the various pathways. Mostly flat and near town but still a nice hike.

Great trails. Love the deer and birds and the smell of fresh cut grass. Go early to see less bikers and more nature. ALLTRAILS worked fantastic. Thanks for the track.

The falls were not what I expected the trail were ok. would choose another place to hike at if I had the option

Nice easy hike with good views of the lower and upper waterfalls. Go early to avoid the crowds of people swimming. The paved Onion Creek loop adds some miles but is more like a leisurely walk instead of hiking. Nice wildflowers along the loop.

...all you ever want here at Flat Rock, climbs, descents, tricky technical, crazy switchbacks and vast, breathtaking hill country scenes...oh and the cattle, goats and sheep!!!

This is a fast easy ride !!! Single track with some rock gardens with no obstructions to look ahead

For the most part everything is cool, the trail is pretty narrow at times. More bicyclists than hikers which for the most part isn’t a problem. There is the occasional “I’m better than you, get out of my way” bicyclist. I don’t take too kindly to that, I am courteous and respectful and realize that I am slower so I move out of the way and even apologize for the inconvenience I may be causing. I however am not gonna run 5 feet off the trail into waste high grass or what ever for you. Being a rude jerk won’t get you anywhere, be respectful and courteous to EVERYONE and everyone will be happy and fine.

A grouping of several trails that can be scaled up to the full five miles or scaled back to as little as three miles. The centerpiece is the painted bunting trail (have not seen a painted bunting yet), which is 70% meadow to 30% forest. In Spring, the flowers are your main attraction and, if the trail has not been recently mowed, grasshoppers might bounce off of you as you forge ahead. In Winter, the attraction is the unrestrained wind carrying the intoxicating scent of distant fireplaces. You will hike several inclines, but none too high or too rough (just rough enough). You will have to hop-scotch over the rocks; most have been placed by nature at intervals that will favor your feet, but do keep your eyes on the ground as you navigate them. It is true the surroundings are not the most handsome; this is the grizzled Hill Country landscape, after all, and I believe some controlled burns were conducted in the past, giving the place a war-torn appearance in spots. On the other hand, the open view allows you to scan occasionally for feral hogs, whom you might see trotting about. A distant hello is sufficient for these creatures. If you are scaling up, you will detour off the painted bunting trail at the crossroads down inside what I call the 'valley of the souls' (you'll know it when you see it) onto the live oak and river overlook trails. On this detour the view narrows and the rocks get ornery. You can wander off-trail to gaze upon the Guadalupe and wonder who else has been there as the centuries have passed, but do not stop for long, lest you lose the hang of getting through the gauntlet of stone. You will eventually pick up the painted bunting trail again and be hit with the hike's rudest incline. Hit it with all your vigor and it tends to back down. Then you're in open country again (or at the parking lot). Congratulations, it is accomplished.

Loved this trail

Nice trail to ride. Love the trail and the views.

Amazing, great way to get in touch with nature.

Nice 3 mike loop, meadows/wild flowers, tricky rocky areas fun on a good MTB, some uphills, few downhills, easy-moderate.

Trails were clean and fun! Met lots of nice people.

Good hiking with nice views. The trail is easy to follow but it needs better trail markers.

Wow. Haven’t gotten a lot of rides under my belt yet but was super excited about this trail. It. Is. Tough. But so much fun and the scenery is amazing. Definitely coming back.

It was easy and relaxing.

I have used this trail for hiking several times now, I have yet to be disappointed. The last time there I had my grandkids join me and we had a great morning.. walking , talking , watching the birds, ducks along the San Antonio River. I would recommend this trail to all... family friendly.!
