on Burke Lake Trail

This little haven in the middle of Fairfax is the nicest place you can get away to with just driving 10-15mins from home. We enjoy every time we come here. Mostly for walking, fishing, and biking. Its open year round.

Nice loop around a quaint lake. Perfect place to run! There are a lot of activities in the park to do other than the trail like fishing, golfing, mini-golf, carousel, train, boating, and frisbee golf

The entire New River Trail stretches for a total of 57 miles. Foster Falls seems to be about mid point between Fries VA pronounced Freeze. The Northern stretch from Foster Falls to Dora Junction (Draper VA) is a 4% grade going up and from Foster Falls to Fries is a 4% uphill trek. My wife and I did the trail in two legs. Fries to Foster Falls 4% grade going down and the northern start of the trail at Dora Junction going down 4% all the way to Foster Falls. It is a beautiful trail to experience lined with breadth taking views of the New River, many old railroad trestle's to cross with a tunnel to go through as well. Foster Falls host a Welcome Center with State run facilities since it is a state park. Primitive camping is available at the Foster Falls Park site as well as designated primitive sites along the trail. The Mercantile in Draper VA has a livery shop where bikes can be rented if only a portion of the trail catches your interest. From Draper to Hiwassee where one of the most picturesque views of the New River can be seen on top of an old railroad trestle that crosses the river. If you are fortunate enough you just might see a trail angel that frequents the trail from time to time. The New River Trail is one of the greatest outdoor recreation activity you will find in the state of VA that offers hiking, biking or horse backing it.

This is a great trail run/walk course. Very tough course!

I usually add a couple more miles of the blue Bull Run trail to this but overall a fun little run. Make sure to study the map beforehand, the trailblazes are tricky the first time you go on it. Gets quite muddy after rain but on sunny days it is nice! This trail mostly follows the creek. There are some rocks and a semi-steep uphill climb at the very end—depending which way you start. Pretty busy on the weekends.

This is a great hike close to home. The trail is not cleaned up of branches and fallen trees regularly but I don’t mind. The lake is beautiful.

This is the place where lot of marathon runners train.

Ran the Night Train 50k on this trail. I normally don’t post trail running events but I’m posting this one because it is such an awesome trail for just about any activity on summer nights.

Due to I-95 bottlenecks, accidents, and vacation/holiday traffic, I toed the line 52 mins late (thanks to a cool race director who did not have to let me race, and warned me not to arrive late again). I finished at ~7:46, starting out in 96 degree heat. But, who really cares that much about run time when you come across landmarks like this! Would one run right past the Leaning Tower of Pisa (Pisa, Italy) or Christ the Redeemer (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) without stopping for a moment to take in the spectacle? I think not.

This is not as famous a landmark but is very much appreciable. Just amazing!!

Great for walking and running. Sometimes there are too many bikers which can be annoying if you’re running or walking. Lots of shade and a few bathrooms available.

I'm pretty much a beginner at mountain bikeing. I had a lot of fun here, It's not to difficult, but it was 94 dehrees out and had a good workout after an hour of this trail and doing the apple orchard trail twice. No other bikes out during the week day I was there which was nice because I'm pretty slow. Easier then fountain head which was nice, lots of rolling sections.

Wonderful hiking. Loved going under the bridge to see the old railroad

Love this trail, great for families with little ones

First hike of the summer with 6 tween/teens. Great hike. They didn’t love the uphill climb at the northern most point, but they all made it!!

Great for a beginner! Be mindful of the mushiness on a wet day though. It gets slippery.

Absolutely beautiful and I plan to come back. I didn't know that I had to pay 10$ because I don't live in Fairfax but it was definitely worth the 10$! I will definitely visit again.

My go-to place for hiking, walking the dogs or running. Fairly easy and flat 4.7 mile trail. Go early as gets busy on nice and sunny days. Free for fairfax county residents ($10 for non-residents).

$10 fee to get into the park for non residents

Perfect long run location, mostly flat and views of the Claytor Lake. Can be crowded at times but the trail is on a 15-20’ Wide old RR bed and is well maintained.

Great exercise trail for walking, biking, or running. Would be five stars but there are no great views, just streams and woods. There are steep hills for a strenuous run, but with a good plan you can walk for a couple of miles without overworking it.

I wouldn’t say this trail is “easy” because it is quite rocky in some parts.
But it’s a lovely trail and we enjoyed it- myself, my 4yo and my pup.

Nice short hiking trail.
Muddy and buggy(both from water I guess) but has great small mountain-like trail and scenery.

Great place! In my opinion, it’s much nicer to visit on a bad weather day or week day when it’s less crowded. It can be tough to get through large groups of people bc not everyone shares the trail. I like to connect the lakes and get around 11 miles to run to Mercer and back to the lot. -that is my fave FFX run! I do it 2x a week.

What most people miss when they come to High Bridge is the Mountain Biking trails.

There are 2 loops of bike specific single track on the Rochelle tract, located half way between the Farmville Plaza and the River Road parking lot. The entrance to the Rochelle tract has a kiosk at gate and a gravel road going up a hill. Both loops come off the gravel road on the right. The Early trail is a 1.6 mile beginner loop with great flow and just enough trick to keep the interest of any advance rider. The hardest part is climbing the gravel road up to the entrance, it exits at the bottom of the hill. The Burnside Technical loop is 2.8 miles of advanced riding with a good aerobic component mixed with sweet flowing sections, roller coasters and serious drop thrus. Be cautious the first time thru, as there are a couple spots that can catch you off guard.

So, to all those people that say how boring the High Bridge trail is. All I can say is you missed one of the best parts of the park.

Beautiful and easy trail. The highlight is reaching the bridge with its views.

Too flat. A little boring for my taste.
