A kinda confusing spiderweb of trails, so make sure you take a map for navigation. No views or nothing, but relatively wide trails and far fewer people on a Saturday morning than Hartshorne Woods. Mostly flat with a few gentle grades.

We just spotted two baby bears!! And mommy bear may be around!! Carry Bear Spray!!

Great trail for a beginner mountain biker. Some parts are tricky but short

had a lot of fun running this trail after a significant downpour. trails were largely loose rock and because of the rain more streams then paths. saw a guy halfway with video of a black bear that he had seen a bit earlier along the trail, so be aware of your surroundings and consider hiking with a bell to avoid surprises.

Good trail for exercise, not much to see here. Yellow Trail follows Patriots path for a short distance.

I love this trail system, i would go as far as saying its one of the best trail systems on long island but that right is reserved for Glacier Ridge on baldhill, However this is good, not too much climbing, but not too much downhill kinda overall flat. Its a decent long island trail and i will be going back for sure, This is a great loop for first time mountain bikers, i didn't even need my full suspension bike to do this, I honestly could of gotten away with this on a hardtail, Its worth the time if your local but if your off Long island this isn't worth a trip, Its not IMBA maintained and it doesn't look like the trail workers care too much about certain sections, But overall i do like this trail, DO NOT RECOMMEND GOING DURING HUNTING SEASON. Just be careful if you do wear bright colors.

I love this hike. It’s on the easier side, mostly on wide clear paths through the woods, with one stretch where you’re hiking up to the top of the hill. Minimal if any scrambling. We’ve done this in all seasons and it’s always fun. You can see pretty far from the top, including NYC. Our dog loves it. Have seen others mountain biking, cross country skiing, etc.

I can

Enter onto tracks and follow them to the field entrance. Yes you can cross, please do so safely. Stay left for Cannonball Trail in Red. If you hit white then you missed the split to the left for Red. Wrap the pond at the top of the trail. Descent trail, once your on them they are pretty well maintained. Good routes but no crazy elevations changes or overlooks. Good for mountain biking!

I used to go to William Paterson so knowing where the real start of the trails are was in my favor. I mostly hiked the white trail which unexpectedly turned into the orange trail which then unexpectedly ended in a neighborhood. I walked a couple feet to start on the yellow trail(which i found easily) but the remainder of the yellow trail was not well marked. I ended up losing the yellow trail quickly and instead picked up the white trail again. I was searching for the blue trail which according to where it would be on the map, was not marked at all. I hiked back to the red trail via the white and coming back it was MUCH more difficult to follow. Many of the marked trees are not marked on both sides, hence the difficult following it back. Be prepared for tons of loose rocks and small water crossings.

Great easy relaxing ride, flat , not demanding . Good for families with young children

Fun trail for mountain biking. Started at sunrise parking lot in Lewis Morris Park out 5 miles and then back 5 miles. For the most part Trail is dirt and gravel, lots of big roots in some sections and a few bridges with no ramp on: off so had to get off Bike and walk across. Two sections where water in brook was higher and moving so again had to dismount and walk Bike through water while using the stepping stones. One very long uphill section from the Mendham police station but rewarded with coming downhill on the way back. I’d rate this as moderate because of the roots and rocks but definitely recommend!.

Really rocky, recommend a full suspension. has many technical parts.

Been hiking Cannonball for practically my entire life. Grew up with it in my backyard. Well marked trail and good terrain. Always a fun hike.

Exactly as described--out and back--not much to see but sometimes I don't want to have to look at a map or wonder where I am...this trail serves that purpose. I did have a hard time finding the trail head. The directions point you to the tennis court parking lot but the trail start is on Fairview Avenue. I used 199 Fairview Avenue, Verona, NJ for my GPS.

Super easy flat paved trail. Lots of shade. Very well maintained.

Good 10K run out-and-back on a decent, but not great trail. It's not maintained very well, but it's fine for a run, walk or easy mountain bike ride. Not great for serious hiking as West Essex is essentially a suburban wooded Path. You're not likely to encounter any wildlife that you wouldn't find in your own backyard. The nicest spot on the trail is where the trail (former trestle) crosses the Peckman River.

Plenty of easy parking on Fairview Ave. No portable toilets. Seemingly quite safe due to proximity to houses. Two other trails intersect the West Essex rail trail.

first time we went here, the trail varied from medium to hard. but it was an amazing ride. it is well marked and beaten. only went off the trail once. there are difficult trails off the main trail, again well marked. we did not do the full 15 miles, there are plenty of points to cut the trail down a bit. cannot wait to go again.

Surprisingly nice trail located in the middle of a densely populated area. Good parking lot near William Patterson University starts the hike. Nice view of NYC to the east, and another to west looking at reservoir and I-287 and hills. A little rocky - mostly loose rocks - no hard climbs and well marked for the most part but there are many unmarked trails so one has to pay attention.

As a casual mountain bike rider I found this trail very difficult, especially the hills. I also found the trail markings a bit difficult to follow at times. I guess the trails would be great for anyone with very strong legs and a full suspension bike. If you're a novice this trail is not for you.

Pretty hike! Loads of trees and shade, so it's great for a super sunny day for those of you'll who don't like the sun very much

I rode this path yesterday and enjoyed every twist, turn, incline and bump. It was an easy paved ride and I look forward to doing it again soon.
