on St. Mary's Glacier

I usually agree with the average rating on AllTrails but not in this case. Yes it is close to Denver but this is overrated on all accounts. Drive an extra 20-30 minutes for many more options.

Super cool to see a glacier! Great hike for someone who wants epic views without it taking a chunk of your day. The trail was icy/slushy when we went 5/13/18 but nothing terrible in hiking boots!

Easy hike. Went today 5/13/18 and there was minimal packed snow up to the lake. We had on hiking boots and tennis shoes. There is some water to walked through, but our friends with tennis shoes manage just fine walking on logs/rock to pass by. Pretty lake up top and campsites.

Trail head has Portal Potties (not the cleanest). $5 fee to park (Honor System). The trail is pretty steep and rocky in the beginning but not bad at all. Once you reach the top it's amazing. Mountains were covered in snow. The trail is covered in snow, some slush but no ice..snow is very very slippery in sneakers so wear boots. At the top you can ski down, snow board or just slide down. The lake was half frozen. Beautiful pictures on this trail. Trail had moderate traffic. Definitely coming back when snow is melted.

fun trash bag sledding!

I’ve done this hike before and i like it a lot. Does anybody know when the road will reopen?

Simple, beautiful hike. My favorite to do with family and friends coming in from out of state because even the out of shape of us can handle it and it’s an incredible pay off.

Beautiful little trail. Definitely wear some waterproof boots.. lots of little streams and snow on the trail. Otherwise great views ! 5$ parking bring exact change !

Very easy for a family with small children. Not rigorous or challenging at all; good when you have a 2 year old who wants to walk.

Amazing views! Lots of snow, bring water proof boots

beautiful! hiked today with some friends - most of them just had regular tennis shoes on and did fine. it’s definitely slick, but it’s a fun challenge..and you’re not close to a cliff or anything, so if you slip it’s no biggie. tons of people out today! absolutely gorgeous hike.

This is a nice hike though pine forest with great views of the snow-covered mountain . Trail still covered in snow; the first section was a bit slushy and icy but doable if you take it slow (earlier in the day seemed better); snow past the 'lake' is less compacted and less slippery.

Has anyone hiked this trail in the past few days? Curious what the conditions are like up there.

Wonderful trail, went up to lost lake. It was very snowy but well packed. Had to like in a bit from the main road.

Great hike with beautiful views, clean air, and the lake at the end is beautiful!

A little difficult for an easy trail but well worth it.

Beautiful hike today on 4/19. Packed snow and ice almost completely covering entire trail up to the end of the trail. Definitely helped to use my yak tracks. I didn’t slip at all or have any difficulty while using them (besides the altitude and the entirely uphill trail-lol). Not too much of an elevation gain but the altitude definitely makes it more challenging. I was truly surprised by how many other people were on the trail and the fact that 95% of those people were very ill prepared for hiking. I’m here were people in shorts and almost everyone else was wearing either tennis shoes or casual shoes. No wonder I saw so many people falling. Please be prepared for the ice/snow and weather

Went today, it was a wonderful hike. In the icy spots just stay on the snow along the edges.

Nice to go in April when it’s much less crowded.

Did this hike at the end of June with no research on the trail whatsoever. We were simply exploring and happened to find a trail. We hiked all the way to Lake Isabelle before turning around (started late in the day). The trail is very well maintained. There was some snow around the 10,000 foot mark, and some rock scrambling near the end. On our way up we saw a waterfall coming out from a mound of snow and ice high up. We didn't realize until we got to the lake that it seemed to be coming from the lake. The lake itself is serene and beautiful. We were the only ones there. Hike was fairly easy and we would love to do it again maye this time going a little bit further.

Beautiful hike this morning, we had the top all to ourselves. Looking forward to coming back and experiencing it in warm weather.

Road is closed!

Beautiful view of the glacier, a bit windy and cold so come prepared!

The road to the trailhead is currently closed for construction. I would not recommend until it reopens as it will add miles of pavement hiking.

Bring microspikes in winter months.

Went up when it was frozen over with some friends. It's tough getting up and back down with all the snow, but so worth it. Some people hike up and sled / snowboard down. You get to walk around on a big frozen lake once you make it all the way. Really awesome.

Gorgeous winter hike. Tough with the extra mileage due to the road closure. Definitely bring snow shoes.

Fun day hike! Only downside would be the amount of dog poop everywhere.

Great little winter hike. We went the extra half mile to Lost Lake. In the winter you can't park at the trailhead so that adds about a half mile as well. No snowshoes required but yaktraks are nice!

Very easy, beautiful hike. If you’re looking for something non strenuous and short this is a good one. Fun to sled down the hill in the winter too!
