Hiking

Planned to go to Foggy Lake but turned it early. 6-10” heavy wet snow, lots of water on stream crossings, raining steady with mixed snow. Had micro spikes, should have brought snowshoes. Pretty slow walking in heavy snow. It’s winter conditions from here on out. Road up to Barlow Pass snow/slush, easy with 4WD, would be a bit tricky for 2WD without snow tires and low ground clearance. Tried to get up to Deer Lake on the way home for a look but even in 4WD-L with the rear diff locked it was work breaking trail, finally gave it up, backed down a ways & turned around just shy of the lake & managed to not get stuck in the process. Fun day, shorter hike than planned but nice walk in the woods nonetheless.

Great hike! winter is taking over though, no special gear needed as of yet! spikes and poles would be helpful but not necessary yet. The trail was quiet and it was nice not wearing a mask.

We didn't quite make it to the lake. We were less than a mile away when we met our turn-around time. The weather was gorgeous. The snow on the trail slowed us down and it took 4 hours to get to the fork where the PCT trail and Thunder Mt. trail meet. The boulders were actually fairly easy to hike as the snow covering them was hard enough to carry you without too much postholing. Microspikes and poles were a big help. Two trail runners were the only other people we met. They said that the lakes were frozen.

10/29/20 - Easy/flat start followed by steady gains via switchbacks followed by difficult, uneven, rocky trail. Nice views over the latter half. Upper third with patches of ice - had to take off and put on the microspikes multiple times. Foggy Lake is still accessible, free of ice, and was perfectly calm. Ankle deep snow is present around the lake. Only saw 4 total people the entire day, had Foggy Lake to myself - the group of 3 stopped at Weeden Lake.

Winter has arrived at 5000 feet. Ran into a blizzard just before the basin and had to turn back. Snow covered the path to the lake. Bring mircospikes, wear boots with gators and extra layers. It was too cold, wet and windy to use a touch-screen device, so plan accordingly.

Steep elevation gain as mentioned before but manageable. The river crossings were the difficult parts for us. Only made it 2/3rds the way up due to time constraints but hoping to go back later and finish the while thing!

HikingGreat!RockyScramble

I had originally planned to hike Silver Lake. Ended up not doing research (any, really) and started up the gothic basin trail toward foggy lake. The hike is fairly strenuous, especially the middle 1/3rd. When you get to the top, there is an obvious lake on your right. If you continue up past it up the rocky area, there is another lake just below the gothic peaks. Im not too sure which lake is "foggy lake" but the lake above is gorgeous and provides a great view. Started at 930am and ended around 230pm at a pretty quick pace (especially down). Plan to get there early and hike this a good portion of your day! Views for the majority of this hike are amazing. Well worth it.

HikingGreat!

Trail was beautiful and well maintained, road was easy up, fall colors were in full bloom, and plenty of cool lakes to check out. Warning: we did see a mama brown bear and her cub about 3 miles into the hike. Cub seemed curious and mom seemed suspicious and stood her ground, so we called it a bit short. Signs do say bears frequent this area specifically, so be aware.

Ok so just want to come on here and clarify for anyone who might have the same idea we did - our plan was to hike in about a mile and setup camp at Twin Bridges and then treat it like a day hike and come back to camp after. When you look at the all trails map, Twin Bridges campsite looks like it’s on the same side of the water as the Gothic Basin Trail, but turns out you have to cross the river (via the log bridge) over to the Monte Cristo trail and THAT is where Twin Bridges campsite is. In all reality it’s not that far off of the Gothic Basin trail, but took us almost an hour of going up and down the bank of the river looking for the campsite to figure out it was on the other side of the river. Hope this can help save someone else the headache!

So long story short, we thought we were taking this trail just up a little ways and then cutting back down to Monte Cristo. Not quite sure where we missed that turn, but ended up going almost all the way up this bad boy. I'm more of a moderate trail hiker, because of my skill level, so this trail kicked my butt. Starts of winding through trees and over some streams, very beautiful. Then the elevation starts, moderately at first. About half way up the switch backs, it gets a bit dicey. Once you're past that, you get an amazing view and a waterfall. Due to our late start and poor planning, we had to turn around. Took about 3.5 hours from the parking lot, waterfall, and then back. The trees were becoming quite beautiful, however. Challenging hike that I would like to revisit!

Lots of rain there yesterday evening. We carried our dog to trek through the river which was quite high and quick (probably should’ve stopped there ha!) We were heading up to get a campsite but at the waterfall there was way too much water to pass it safely. We ended up just heading back down. We’ll be back at a drier time!
