I accessed this area via the Mt Wilson Trail starting from Sierra Madre. There were not any signs or tape indicating the area was closed for hikers. The entire summit was covered in snow. As expected, the restaurant, observatory, and restrooms were all closed. Anyhow, this area is beautiful and can't wait until they open so I can visit the observatory!
Nice, easy walk. Mostly shaded and not too crowded.
Took the tour and learned a lot about the beginnings of astrophysics.
Easy paved path around the historic Mt Wilson Observatory, with breathtaking views of the LA Basin. Great for kids, with the historic telescopes, museums, and of course the Cosmic Cafe for snacks. To make it slightly more adventurous, Echo Rock is an easy quarter mile or so on the (unpaved) Sturtevant Trail, with great views of the back range.
