Counterclockwise is definitely the way to go. I'd much rather start the trip with the burned forest section and end on a beautiful note than vice versa. If you go clockwise you also have to start with an immediate straight up hill. Gorgeous trip though either way.

I've hiked this trail twice so far. Both times I went clockwise and not the ccw most recommend. I prefer getting the elevation done the first day, camp around green lakes then hike the rest in the morning.

Once we left Hidden Falls (Sunday afternoon) the amount of people on the trail dropped away significantly, and after 1 1/2 miles saw no one until the first campsite. We camped in the second. Hiked to Phelps Lake the second day. Unbelievably beautiful. The view from the Hurricane Pass looking ESE was one that will remain with me. I consider myself to be lucky to have been there in that moment. It started snowing at Sunset Lake. We were behind schedule, and had intermittent snowfall all the way to the Static Pass. Going down into Death Canyon was glorious in the afternoon sun after the cold, snow, and wind we had just been through. Camped at Phelps Lake. I was grateful for the flatness the majority of the way to the intersection with the Amphitheater Lake Trail the next day. Saw a black bear just off the trail first thing in the morning hiking back up to the main trail from our campsite.The hike up to Amphitheater and Sunset Lakes was a good workout. It was just below freezing when we got in about 4pm and there was snow on the ground. The water in my bottle was partially frozen the next morning. It was all down hill and flat back to Jenny Lake.

Hiked the loop on 9/27 - 9/28 of 2018 CCW. The first few miles in this direction is through an area that has completely burned out and the dead trees look very eerie. Glad I went CCW so as to get this section over in the beginning of the trek and leave the great views for the end.

Lots of water sources in all areas EXCEPT NONE between the southern part where the trail turns sharply north. Before you start the northerly trek up to No Name Lake (CCW direction), be sure you have plenty of water. Lake and creek are not safe to drink. Lot's of sweat and the need to stay hydrated is very important. Three liters was barely enough for myself and dog. Were thirsty when arriving back to the lake and TH.

Worst part of the trip was being worried about following the correct trail. The entire Rim trail is horribly marked and there's several intersections with trails that have NO signs and are not on any map or Garmin. It was kind of crazy this way! Example, you're walking the RIM trail and you come across a sign that simply says "TRAIL" with an arrow heading off to the cliff. Then there's fork where it says horses one direction and hikers in the other, so you think you're at the section where the livestock trail begins and you only have 1.5 miles to the lake. But then a couple more miles later you actually come to that junction and wonder what the heck just happened.

Overall great hike but plan accordingly with water and be sure to navigate well. If you take the wrong path then you'll add extra miles on to your trip.

Titcomb basin at the end of this trail is one of my favorite areas in the Bridger Wilderness. Nice views along the way. It's a great place to spend a few days exploring or fishing

Lovely area. Can't go wrong with any trail around here. I went from Green Lakes Trail, camped at the base of the mountain, and summited the next morning. The walk is pretty straight forward. There is one 20 foot vertical wall at the top. It is recommended to use ropes on this wall. Be careful!

Cool hike! I did something similar in a single day but instead went all the way to granite canyon, and also did avalanche divide. It's a hard hike - probably in the 35ish miles, but well worth it! The trick is to not do the valley - instead I was able to hitchhike from granite to jenny lake fairly easily.

My friends and I didn’t actually hike the loop start to finish. Ended up starting at Green Lakes TH on accident, but we made it to Golden Lake the first night. Great views of The Sisters and Broken Top the whole way and at the campsite. Turned around the second day and back to Green Lakes and up to Small Creek. Took most of our gear off and went and summited Broken Top. I recommend not using the app and stick to the trail signs if you are coming from that direction (soda creek, green lakes) it ended up taking us basically straight up part of the mountain without a visible trail. Hiked about 20 miles the second day. Spent our second night towards Green Lakes and then hiked out of Soda Creek in the morning. We didn’t do “the loop” by a completionist standard but I’m told we did all of the good parts.

Fantastic 3-day trip in the Winds! Rather than taking the little jaunt north to Cook Lakes as seen in the AllTrails map, I highly recommend summitting Mount Lester. We camped at Little Seneca Lake on night 1 after hiking from the popular Elkhart TH. Day two we hiked just past Pole Creek Lakes on this loop, and we climbed Mount Lester (12,324 ft) as we came across Lester Pass on the Highline Trail. A fun moderate climb to the top, ascending from the Southwest. A few scrambles, but nothing crazy. Then we hiked back out from Pole Creek Lakes on day three. Beware a couple stream crossing that required wading (never more than knee deep), and the area is quite buggy, so bring spray. Encountered one black bear at camp while sleeping, but no issues other than rolling our bear canister around a bit before moving on. The second half of this loop was pretty lightly trafficked, while Elkhart is quite busy. All in all, a fantastic three day backpacking trip.

Great hike. planned on a 2 day 1 night trip. but things happened and I had to get out of there did the whole loop one day. proved its doable but not recommended unless you're in the condition for it. Apparently didn't get the memo on the dead elk and I refilled my water at the creek below no name and again at green lakes (another creek). I guess that means either I got lucky or my inline water filter worked well. clockwise or counter clockwise I can see it being good, just depends on if you want to get the climb out of the way earlier or not.

Originally had planned to do the loop in two nights and three days, but pushed through to do one night/two days. I agree that clockwise would be my advice as well, maybe some additional climbing the first day going uphill, but I would not have had the physical and mental strength to do the last part on a second or third day. Skirting Broken Hand was a little unnerving but doable - happy to have gotten it out of the way on day one. Camped at Green Lakes which was beautiful and not super buggy. Lots of water sources along the way but also a lot of exposed trail pretty much the entire time. No Name Lake is gorgeous but I wouldn’t get water there due to the animals on the ridge (dead elk ). Not sure how long they’ve been there, but best not to take chances. We backpacked this on August 8-9, 2018.

I REALLY would recommend CLOCKWISE or else you’re going to have a rough day three. It gets the hardest part out of the way and you start off the biggest incline hydrated, full, and with no sore muscles. If you went counter-clockwise it would be a slow incline the whole time until say where you climb Broken top with 2 days of day hiking Under your belt! People say the views are better counter-clockwise but it’s all the same trail, all you have to do is look behind you and then you’re facing the counter-clockwise view!

We hiked 10 miles the first day up to the summit of Broken top were we collected water and then down Broken top to small creek where we hammock camped and got more water.
On day 2 we made the short and Beautiful hike past green lakes to Golden Lake 6 miles away, there’s a stream right across the lake for fresh water and the views of Broken top are amazing! This day was for swimming, napping and relaxing as it only took 4 short hours to get there.
On the last day we hiked 8 miles to the beginning of the loop with a short incline at the end before walking downhill to the car. There were 3 or 4 creeks on the way for water but almost no shade. We finished this stretch in about 5 hours.

Hike is a little hard for beginners like us but anyone can do it with the right supplies!

What made it easy was my straw water filter I could screw on to water pouches, so I could fill them and drink right away from any stream. Also the self heating Omeals from REI were so cool, so yummy and self heats in only 5 miles with no supplies.

I thoroughly enjoyed this hike and highly recommend it. Its a first for me going to this park and am very glad I gave it a shot.

Some notes:

1) Bring a bathing suit and water shoes if you can! The lakes are very nice to swim in in the summer and are not nearly as cold as you'd think they are.

2) There is no cell reception within 45 minutes of the park, so make sure you download everything you need to and have a solar charger or battery backup with you.

3) The sand is a real downer but its not the whole way, less than half. Just make sure you are prepared for sun for the sections that are fully exposed. Even in full sun, the breeze makes it very tolerable.

Absolutely amazing loop! Hiked counterclockwise + spent first night at golden lake — lovely, a few bugs but nothing terrible. Spent night 2 at no name lake — WINDY, but not too cold and the sunset was unreal. Only part that was a little tricky was meeting back up with the tam mcarthur rim trail after heading cross-country from broken top on the third day. We skirted around the bottom of broken hand (not sure if that was the quickest way), but there was a tiny sort of trail marked with cairns. If you’re heading over this way, heads up that the meet up with the rim trail is right when you come up to the top of the saddle and broken hand/broken top are on your right — we started heading downhill through the rock field and had to scramble back up a bit to meet the trail. All in all a fantastic trip with no shortage of scenic views, would recommend to anyone!

Did the loop counterclockwise like most people suggest and it was the right call. The first 6 or so miles were a bit dry and boring (mostly burnt). Once you get some elevation it becomes much better. Plenty of creeks the entire way. After you pass green lakes it is beautiful. I did 20 the first day and camped at broken top and I’m glad I did. Sunset at broken top was perfect. camped overlooking the lake and it was great. Woke up and did the easy 5 down and am off to see more.

To save on driving I started the walk from Summit Lake and set off clockwise at ~6AM. I'm in reasonable walking shape and hoped to finish in around 8h-8h30 but this took me about 9h15 so do not underestimate it.

This is an outstanding walk that covers a huge variety of different terrain in a very compact walk. Each of the lakes are stunning, particularly in the early morning light and the walk up Cinder Cone is fortunately not too strenuous if you take it slow and steady.

Doing this as a day hike I found the section from Snag Lake to Rainbow Lake to be particularly punishing, in part because it was the middle of the day with some strong sun. If you're also interested in doing this as a day hike and think you won't fully seize up, it may very well be worth taking a long break at Snag Lake to allow the midday sun to pass.

Strongly recommended, the only downside is all the damn sand.

Completed this loop July 21st-23rd 2018. Two nights and about two and half days total hiking, with campsites at South Cascade Fork and Surprise Lake (slight detour). I logged about 40 miles total with the 6 mile total side trip to Surprise/Amphitheater Lakes, so the Alltrails mileage is a bit off.
A few notes:
Teton Crest Trail (North to South)- Plenty of amazing campsites along the South Cascade Fork. Two short snowfields left to cross or detour around. Amazing view of the three Tetons from the top of the pass. Crosses into Alaska Basin (National Forest territory), where there is also dispersed camping around Sunset Lake. Wish I would have known that going in but oh well. :)
Alaska Basin Shelf Trail- This is where it got tricky. There were about 10 large snow fields to cross where there were no decent detour options. Over Buck Mountain Pass you think you're done but oh no, there's a massive steep snow field that wraps around the basin leading up to Static Divide. Spikes and an ice ax would have made my life a lot easier here. Crossed it and a few smaller ones to get up to Static Divide. If you have a spare 15-20 min, go ahead and bag Buck Mountain right off the divide. Gorgeous views, and steep switchbacks with some snowpack left going down.

All other trails were smooth sailing. Overall, a stunning hike and awesome backpacking experience. Definitely coming back to hike the whole Teton Crest Trail next.

Did this as an overnighter the first week of July. As everyone says, counter clockwise is best. Mountains and lakes within view the whole time. Slept at Golden Lakes but up in the stone to avoid mosquitos. There were only a couple spots with heavy mosquitoes but we just kept moving through those parts. None at higher dryer elevations. Noname Lake was still covered in snow and ice so we did not sleep there but continued back to the trailhead using the Rim Trail. The Rim Trail was amazing! We skirted the rocks on the path around the butte which was a little sketchy but not too hard. The butte is the only hard part in trying to find a trail.

If I were to recommend this, I would say take three days and camp in Green Lakes area first night. Then take a day trip with only water and extra clothes to summit South Sister. With the last day being to climb to Noname Lake and Rim Trail home. :) Lots of Miles but two mountain tops and amazing views!

Great Hike. Nine Boy Scouts and three Scout Leaders did the loop counter-clockwise from July 6-8, 2018. Day 1 was Three Creeks Lake to Golden Lake. About 8.5 miles. Lots of down fall and a few streams to cross. Day two started at Golden Lake and ended below No Name Lake. About 11.5 miles. Great views at the saddle between Broken Top and South Sister. Started to run into lots of hikers are Green Lake. Last mile involved lots of elevation. Day 3 started with the hike up to No Name Lake. The lake is pretty, but the money spot is the ridge above No Name Lake. To the North, we had a full view of the Sisters, Mt. Washington, Three Finger Jack, Jefferson, and Hood. Many photos taken. From that point the trail along the ridge is very rough -- loose rock and snow fields on steep pitches. After about a mile, you link up to the main trail and it's smooth sailing back to Three Creeks. Overall, the hike's rewards vastly exceed its drawbacks. Highly recommended.

Pretty amazing loop. Agree that CCW is ideal. Get the burn out of the way first, many many downed trees on trail. I recommend skipping the little lake offshoots and scrambling the NW ridge instead. Even if you only just gain the ridge (8200ft) the views are epic and it’s much more peaceful than the highly trafficked lakes. Water ever few miles. And as of early July 2018 there is little to no snow on route. Most of it is near the rim portion and can be done in tennies. Would do a few weeks earlier (mid June) if done again, as the peaks are prettiest with ample snow. Beware of mosquitoes!!! Hoards of them anywhere below ca. 7500ft.

This trail was amazing… The map that is shown goes off trail a significant amount but because we had GPS we were able to figure it out. Going later in the summer if you are worried about losing the trail would be ideal so that the snow has time to melt. We went counterclockwise which was for sure the best because the mountains were in our view the entire time. Going that way there were incredible campsites at about mile five and again around mile 15.

Hiked this over memorial day weekend with a small group. Given that the majority of the trail is covered in snowpack at the moment, we more or less followed this route. We did the trip as an overnighter and camped at Green Lakes.We did the route clockwise which was the right choice given the conditions, but if we went in the summer we all agreed we'd probably go counter clockwise if for no other reason than dropping 2000ft in elevation at the end of the hike is much nicer than asending 1000.

This loop is absolutely gorgeous and we highly recommend it. As others have mentioned it's probably worth taking special care on the section from Broken Hand to the end of the trail. We didn't have to worry about it so much since we went the opposite way but I remember looking over my shoulder and thinking that finding the hook up with the Tam McArthur Rim Trail would be pretty damn hard if I didn't already know where it was.

We did Timber Gap to Frankiln Pass,Black rock pass is pretty tough from this way but very rewarding. Over all just a beautiful trek and loved every minute of it! We took 6 days to do this route.

Incredible track with some spectacular views. Completed this loop in 4 days. Day 1 - Island Lake, Day 2 - Summit Fremont Peak, Day 3 - Hike from Island to Cook Lakes and down to Pole Creek Lake, Day 4 - Hike to Elkhart Park.
