Did a portion of the trail on 03/03/21. Very limited parking due to the snow. Difficult to stay on the trail. Used both spikes and snowshoes. Recommend snowshoes. Have been there 3 times this winter and am familiar with the trail. Navigation would probably be difficult for a first timer, but it can be done. Turned around due to time constraints. Like always, very beautiful.
I am writing this review late as I did this hike last summer in July but it’s an amazing one. We did it at night on a new moon so we only had the light from headlamps on the way up. Set out around 2am and got to the summit right at sunrise. I highly recommend doing it this way for a couple reasons. Firstly because it gets so hot once the sun comes up and secondly going up in the dark is such a great experience. A full moon would probably be best but either way sunrise from up top is unbelievable and the views are like no others I’ve seen. Tough to beat with the lake on one side and desolation wilderness on the other. Can’t recommend this hike highly enough, it’s steep and tough but well worth it. Bring lots of water and food to stave off cramps and bonking.
Hike not recorded but want to save hike. We loved this trail! It was beautiful and easy. The bridge and river was up and to the left of the trail. Kept it short at 3 miles rt. C loved it also and got to say hello to many of the hikers.
Looking for any available permits. Have heard great things about this trail, but apparently there aren't any available permits until November 2021. Looking to go end of April. email at: anna.tomczak@hotmail.com
Good trail, very few river access points, very few people on this trail.
Too easy to get lost. This trail wasn’t as bad as the other ones connected to it but the signs are terrible! 3 other people yesterday got lost on the trail too. Rescue had to come and still couldn’t find one of the people. Apparently people get lost on these trails over here a lot.
Great trail ... lots of mud and puddles and a few stream crossings due to recent rains tut nothing that squashed the fun!
Nice trail, even in February, even after the burns. No downed trees on the trail. We headed out to Old Sawmill Camp for a backpacking overnight. The water level was very low at camp, 6” at most so no fishing, but it was clean and tasted good. Looks like the trash cans have not been emptied and animals spread out a lot of trash in various campsites. This area has ticks, found 6 on my dog after getting home. Other than that no bugs in the winter. Plenty of down wood/partially burned wood for camp. Nice fire rings with grill.
Dog almost attacked it was not on a leash. Trails were marked at all. It was beautiful
We climbed Mt Tallac 2/6/21. Views from the summit are stunning - definitely the best in Tahoe. This trail is very difficult allow for more time to do this. We figured we would be back at the car by 3-4 PM (starting 9-9:30 AM), but we did not summit until 3:30 PM and got back to the car by 6:30 PM. If you are attempting this in the WINTER and there is 6' of snow, you cannot do this trail without skis or snow shoes. There were groups of people trying to do this trail without any snow equipment and would sink in 3' with every step. Do not be one of these people as these 3' holes make the trail hazardous. As usual, all trails has the distance wrong. From the trailhead it's more like 4-4.5 miles, but since the trailhead road is closed in the winter you have to park on the side of 89 and hike the 1 mile to the trailhead.
It was my first ever hike! I loved it !! I know have a love for hiking !!
An amazing trail! If you bring your dog along make sure to bring booties for them, The sand is very harsh on their pads
didn't summit since I didn't have snowshoes or true crampons. still a beautiful place in winter and majestic views
Great trail the whole way up. Needed yaktrax for some ice here and there but no axe or snowshoes needed all the way to the summit.
