Hiked Sunday, absolutely gorgeous day, fairly warm, especially on the ridge. Micro spikes needed up falling waters trail the most, wouldn’t have made it up that without them. Ridge was completely clear of snow and a couple spots where the spikes were needed again going down old bridle. Overall great hike and it was fun to foot slide down the snowy parts with spikes on.

HikingGreat!

I found the car keys to an Audi right where the path splits. I couldn't find the owner in the mountain and the car wasn't in the parking lot. If you are the owner please lmk so I can mail the keys to you

Simply beautiful and majestic the whole way through. Micro spikes pretty critical, especially during the snowy/icy ascent. You’ll thank yourself for taking them. Sneakers will make it nearly impossible to reach the top. Trail map says ~8 miles, but my IPhone logged 11 miles, probably from some wandering I did. Total time was 6.5 hours, which includes a lunch break at the peak and the views stopping me dead in my tracks many times. Well worth it, but boy are my legs sore today. I brought 2 water bottles and still got thirsty, so be well-stocked!

Amazing views and lucky to have a great weather today April 8, 2021. Snow covered (starting to melt) but a crampon and hiking pole will take care of it. The view from the peak is perfect.

Definitely one of my favorite all time hikes. Micro spikes the entire hike. perfect day not a single cloud in the sky a little cold and quite windy. there were people wearing sneakers so don’t be like them. I honestly don’t know if they survived...

At 5344ft, Mt Marcy is the peak to climb in NY state, but should be respected and not be underestimated by unprepared or novice climbers. This was explained to us a number of times in town by the local people, including several 46ers, or people who have climbed all 46 peaks in the Adirondack mountains! Pretty much everyone suggested it was not a good idea to climb the peak with the current conditions, but being that it’s been on my bucket list for so long I just to had to do it (though definitely not advisable to be too stubborn about it) We bought clampons and hired snowshoes which were recommended for parts of the trail. Definitely take poles! The conditions favorable on Tuesday 30th March 2021, so we managed to get onto the mountain at about 8.00am. There are two crossing Phelps and Indian fall, so you need waterproof boots, otherwise it’ll be miserable for you. It’s easy to see how the crossings could ruin this part of the hike for you, with waist deep water, freezing temperatures, or tons of snow, some unprepared climbers would simply have to turn back. On this particular day both of the crossings were fairly easy for us to pass, especially with one person helping the others and so on. We were blessed with the best weather, and the views over the falls were simply breathtaking. You cannot capture the true beauty on camera. The part after Indian falls is particularly difficult and should be managed well. You will see a 1.2 miles sign, but the top of the mountain looks about 10 miles away! Take a break when you can see the mountain top. It looks like it will take hours to climb, but in reality you are close. 40 minutes! I got the top and the wind was simply ferocious we’re talking 70 mph, but I still managed to take a few photos and even a video! I hunkered down behind a rock and it was simply spectacular. A truly amazing mountain and definitely one to return to. Please check the weather in the next few weeks and be well prepared with good waterproof boots, crampons and poles. There are now currently warnings about the weather, so treat it with a lot of respect. Amazing! Don

Stable monorail throughout, except above treeline. Got here at 8:30, ended at 3:30. Spikes necessary. Some mud, LOTS OF WIND, as per forecast. Didn’t see anyone all day! Great spring hike!

Hiked to the summit of Mt Marcy on March 30th. Incredible hike - breathtaking views and beautiful trail through the forest and past rivers. The conditions on that day were favorable - putting this at the high end of 'moderate' difficulty (or low end of hard) but I can see how tricky conditions would make more challenging particularly with the final mile on the exposed summit. Check mountain weather forecast before you go. On that day snowshoes were not needed - the snow is deep but packed enough so only spikes were used (and needed). Rangers recommend snowshoes - and i would take for piece of mind (have a pack and straps to carry them). Snowshoes can be rented at the information lodge at the trailhead parking lot. You will cross two rivers - Phelps Brook was quite challenging in the morning due to black ice on rocks and logs, but you will find a way (poles will help you cross). Indian Falls was warned as potentially un-passable, but it was fine - however the river banks suggest much higher water. Could check with rangers before going. These provide two water sources so you shouldn't need to carry too much if you want to filter. As others have suggested, wear / take sun screen as you'll be climbing south / into the sun. Start early so you safely make it back before dark. There is a trailhead parking lot fee.
