Fantastic snowshoe / winter hike!

on Cougar Mountain

Made it to the base of the peak of cougar mountain. Went to the false summit and across the ridge only 2271 elevation gained.... however I couldn’t push on due to snow and wind - wasn’t safe even preparing for the hike. Next time going to try it in the summer and camp at the camp ground below - hike the peak and spend a night at the camp ground. Really amazing views and a Beautiful mountain. That 12km straight line to the hike area is a killer. I did it on a bike there and back and it was tough go. Crossing the river was interesting too (used logs to make a bridge) I think the camping will help spilt up that 12km trek a lot better.

Really nice trail! Amazing views. No snow except near the summit. A little bit slipery but definitely worth it!

Hiked the trail today. Amazing weather for late October. Very little snow or mud. We brought our Scottie and he easily made it right to the top Ridge.

We did the full hike in under 6 hours with no gear. Just hiking shoes and lots of water. If you haven’t been here before these are some of the best views in Kananaskis.

Hiked to the Nihahi summit (23/09/18)
Very well marked, follow the map, little bow trail until you see the Nihahi ridge sign. Follow the beaten path to the summit - expect it to take ~2hrs 30mins with limited stops for photos/breaks. The scramble and ridge walk are easily the best part of this hike, there was no snow on the trails/mountain when we did the hike but it did have a few slippery muddy sections (poles or cleats not necessary).
Super awesome views!
Started around noon and was driving to Bragg Creek for a post hike drink around 4:30pm (only did a couple peaks and round trip of 12km).

Saw no wildlife and passed 16-20 hikers and three dogs (2 of the hikers were <10 y/o kids!).

Awesome hike with great weather today. Some slick sections at the top near the first summit, but manageable for most.

Folks, identity politics aside this is a fair weather smut! Today she was a wet and muddy smut. The views are amazing and hike is not too bad. We got to base of the scramble before the snow and sleet turned us around. The Pass of Caradhras was blocked; so we had no choice but to face the long dark of Moria.

This hike has beautiful views that run along the elbow river/creek. Most of the trail is spent on a park service road, which makes the hike easy but a tad boring. You also have to cross the river/creek, so plan on getting your feet wet. Once you cross the creek and head down the road, you will have to pay close attention to the gps as there is no trail head or trail for that matter to summit cougar mountain. So all an all the trail goes from rather easy to hard in a sharp left turn up the mountain.

This hike is a stunner!!! The trail runs alongside ribbon creek making it very enjoyable. Most definitely recommend this hike!!!

great hike with nice diversity in elevation and terrain. good scrambling near the top. lost track of the trail in the middle that made it harder for us but met up back with the trail. when i googled the trail it said its 3 hr hike with only 400 some meter elevation gain so i brought my friends not used to hikes and they didnt have so much fun coming down.

it is a challenging trail and hike. The initial walk in is along the fire road so biking is an option. I walked from the trail head parking lot to the river crossing in just over an hour. once you cross the river into the forest it is not too bad to find your way. just keep looking forward and you will know where to go.

I did not get to the summit as my legs decided they were done about 200m from it. if you do want to summit you do need to climb up a shaft so climbing experience and a helmet may be a good thing to have.

The scree up absolutely sucks and took me almost 3 hours alone..however coming back down took about 40mins.

Check my recording for details.

Amazing trail. Didn’t get to summit due to incoming storm but made it 3/4 of the way up and the view was so nice. Definitely steep in some early spots but if you take your time and don’t rush it isn’t too bad.

Second time hiking to the falls and lake. the trail is in great condition. There is a small section of the trail above the waterfall that is harder to follow to the lake.

One of the most amazing views at the top but incredibly difficult definitely not for anyone who isn't an experienced hiker in great physical condition.

Great scenic trail but very easy to get lost shortly after the waterfall with so many paths. We were lost for at least an hour and ran into another group that were also lost but we headed for the water and eventually made our way back to a trail.

So so beautiful, one of my favourite hikes

Just did this over the long weekend. The trail is in great shape, all the way. We stayed over night at Ribbon Falls, there was lots of firewood and company to visit with. Day hiked up to the lake the next day, the chains were a fun challenge. We brought our 1 year old up with us and he loved every minute of it!

Did a loop past here to Galatea then round Mt Kid back to Kananaskis village the chains where the highlight. The ball ache was the front of Mt Kid. In the trees the whole way. next time I'll just do either end not the front.

Great hike! Beautiful views all the way up of Mt. Romulus, Remus, Glasgow, Cornwall, Fullerton, and Banded Peak pokes through near the ridge. The ridge is a fun scramble in places but not for the faint of heart. Good sturdy hikers or trail runners are recommended. The full ridge does not have to be done, easily a 6-8k return hike up to the ridge and back down to the trail head parking lot. Not busy at all for Tuesday. Only saw 9 other hikers and one dog all day.

had a blast! trails in great shape! chains are knarly and not for the faint hearted. just dont look down. but totally rewarding once up top

We did the first part of the hike (little
Elbow campsite to big elbow backcountry campsite). The trail is super flat with beautiful views. It’s only 8.7 k to the campsite which is right on the river and really beautiful. I would totally recommend!

Beautiful, I’d do it again in a heartbeat

Went up to the chain section on the way to Ribbon Lake, but could not muster the courage to climb up the chains. The hike to the falls was quite easy, with great views. There and back again took around 5 hours, and was approximately 22km. Really hoping to make it to the lake next time.

Went up for sunset last night. Beautiful views most of the way. I would suggest it may be a better sunrise hike next time. Don’t be intimidated by this app saying the hike is 21km. You can stop anytime along the ridge. We hiked for 4 hours and tracked 12.4km.

Probably my favourite hike so far! So many different and great views throughout the day. We hiked Smutwood, not Mount Smuts and I did not find the hike challenging or technical. Our trip total was approx 22k in about 7 hours with tons of down time at the lakes and on smutwood.

Amazing! Beautiful views all the way along. Great diversity in terrain and incline. Hot day- decent tree coverage though for most of it! Lots of great spots to rest along the way and enjoy the view.

nice hike !! the view is beautiful.
