Mellow but long trail. killer view at the top

Great trail. Definitely a challenge, but quite doable. Like others have said, water, food and decent footwear is a must. And layers - it can be quite cool in the wind. And keep your eyes open for the white trail markers painted on the rock. They are pointed at each end, showing the way up and down. 4 to 5 hours, depending on your speed and breaks (especially at the top -- give yourself time to enjoy the view up there).

It was a test. But Awesome!

the hike was moderate but with boulder climbing on the last part. Plenty of cairns on the way up to follow. The drive to the trailhead was more stressful than the actual hike. Highly recommend an suv... Also do not go through the cattle fence on the way out unless you want to get stuck out there!

I would rate this trail as moderate. The ruins at the end of the hike are a definite bonus but it's a beautiful hike. Nice that there are very few people that we encountered along the way.

Hiking shoes/boots required. Almost no flat areas. Windy up too at times (windbreaker suggested). Plenty of water and food. Well marked but there are some off trails that can get you in trouble. I wouldn’t do this if you have bad knees or ankles. Overall, amazing trail, phenomenal views and great feeling of accomplishment after completing.

up in 43:40 today. great hike but starting to get crowded

dirt road follows dry river bed, VERY SANDY. Use 4 wheel low and be patient. first half of hiking trail is easy-moderate. half-way to two-thirds is moderate and begins rock. last third is very rocky and climbing. SPECTACULAR valley view. FRESH AIR!! windy day, partially cloudy and natural air conditioning LOL
Stay hydrated, used 2 liters on way up. one and a half liters on way back. quite a challenge and well worth the hardwork :D

This trail was absolutely breathtaking! The entire way up and down had the most beautiful views. It was not an easy hike but the views from the top were so worth the climb. Give yourself time and bring plenty of water and food if you get hungry! Our pup came with us and he did great too. The trail is well marked with white paint. You can purchase a parking pass at the trail head. Beware: the trail is ACROSS the street from the restrooms and payment areas. 10/10 recommend!

It’s worth going to the lookout towards Sedona. Breathtaking!

Tough, very technical hike for the inexperienced. Amazing views at the top and well worth it. Very poorly marked trail. Even harder coming down. Go slow and watch for cairns.

Are the any updates if the trailhead is open? Would love to do this hike. I went there about 2-3 weeks ago and it was closed! Such a bummer!

this was an amazing hike. the views were incredible. the ruins at the end were a fantastic finish. I really cant describe how awesome this hike was.

the drive to the trail head wasn't to bad. I made it in a 98 Honda crv which has 4 wheel drive. it was slow going (about 2 hours) but totally worth it. I did scrap the bottom of the small SUV a couple of time.

Did this the other day solo despite reading previous reviews it is what they say. Loose gravel, small cacti everywhere, bush wacking, scrambling up wet washes, and the worst marked trail I've ever encountered. If you've never done this then please do yourself a favor and go early in the day. I lost an hour on the way up and almost another hour on the way down. I think going down was almost more confusing. You think you're following your previous trail then you end up almost going off a cliff. no joke. Otherwise the summit was amazing, ate lunch on the bench and signed my name in a notebook inside the mailbox. estimate 5-6 hours total. Bring gloves, snacks, and plenty of water!

on Quartz Peak Trail

I love this hike! I enjoy the drive to it. Steep incline is a definite workout. Go early because one the sun is above the mountain range very limited shade. I didn’t make it to the peak, but if you do wear reliable shoes and a walking stick or trekking poles recommended for balance.

I love this hike. I've done it twice and it never gets old. Very scenic, very quiet, with a decent amount of shade. Bring lots of water and stay prepared for unforseen weather patterns.

awesome trail with lots of scrambling up rocks. Probably my favorite hike so far in Sedona

This trail is very challenging due to its steepness and rockiness. Beautiful views but those can be had elsewhere in Sedona - this is for the strenuousness. The trail is mostly chapparal and cacti. Someone claimed to have gotten up top in one hour and down in 40 minutes - anyone who has hiked the trail knows the 1 hour ascent time is virtually impossible and running down is definitely impossible due to the steepness and rocky terrain (noted just as a warning because this hike is the real difficult deal and you should plan accordingly). On the other hand if you are in superior shape from regular aerobic exercise (including altitude acclimation, the top is at 6,500 feet) you should be able to complete it in 3 to 3.5 hours, longer in the summer. The five hours noted at the trailhead would be appropriate for someone not accustomed to the altitude or regular aerobic exercise.

Super cool trail. Definitely one of the toughest I’ve ever done. Allow yourself the full 5 hours that it says it takes if you plan to do the whole trail. Only 4ish miles round trip but lots of elevation and strategy involved. Also, so many great places to stop and take it all in. There were 3 or 4 times that we thought we were at the top and realized we had quite a ways left. Once at the top, there is a sign that says “End of Trail”. Totally worth the hike. I 100% recommend it!

A good workout and worth it

Amazing hike. Only took an hour to ascend though it wasn’t exactly easy. Let’s just say my legs are going to be sore. The views are stunning. Sedona is an absolutely gorgeous area. My pup and I spent about 45 minutes up on top before descending...which only took about 40 minutes due to the fact we basically ran down it....it definitely doesn’t take 4 or 5 hours to hike like the signs outside of the trailhead say. Well, not if you’re in decent shape.

The perfect amount of challenge for a hike that took less than 3 hours. Properly sore quads the next day. Lots of people using this trail Christmas week. Must have encountered at least 60 other people on the trail.

A great trail, up to the saddle - at which point it becomes a search for the correct route. Be prepared for a couple of false summits and a glorious view from the top. If you hit it early enough in the summer (4 am), you'll have the whole mountain to yourself on the ascent. Round trip can be run with a bit of effort in under 3 hours, but it's nice to give yourself enough time to enjoy the views and allow for at least 5.

Tried to go yesterday and the trail head was closed. Is this due to the government shut down? Or conditions - website is not updated due to the government shutdown. We will be back though! Was very excited to finally do this hike!!!

Amazing viewpoints as you climb. The hike is mostly a straight vertical climb with a small crossing to another climb. The 360 view at the very top is amazing and well worth the effort. Wear good shoes and bring lots of water. We were 3.5-4hours up and back. Took a break at the top for lunch and to enjoy the views. Also enjoyed many viewpoints on the way out. Trail is across the road from the main trail parking lot and is marked by white paint strokes on the rocks as you climb. Highly recommended and not as heavily travelled as other hikes.

The perfect challenge for an avid hiker. The views make the tough climb worth while. This is the perfect hike to see an almost 360 view of Sedona and the valley below with many diverse viewpoints! Definitely bring lots of water and snacks, this one will wear you out!

One of the most amazing experiences! Love the hike. Very hard as I was not in such good shape.
I loved the 360 degree views this place has to offer. It was cold in the morning and evening... but as we got to the top the sun shined on us and kept us warm... Not to mention the activity.
Highly recommended to train prior as much as possible and be prepared for the high elevation effect!

Climbed it on 1/1/2019. We've had near record lows and so the temps were in the 30's when we started. It quickly warmed up, well we did, hands were cold without gloves but outer layers got peeled in the first half mile. The views are fantastic, the climb is challenging. We had snow at the top which was fun being in a light patch of snow and looking into Phoenix Valley.

Look for the cairns along the way, the trail is mostly marked pretty well with them, although coming down we lost them a few times & had to backtrack.

I would go much slower in the warmer months for fear of snakes with all the rocks. I would recommend some agile work or climbing gloves because there are several scrambles along the way and that rock is sharp and jagged. Plus take a comb for Cholla removal because you will likely get it somewhere, even if its just in your bag.

I'll reiterate what was said previously, min of 3 liters of water, and it warmer, take more. The nearest service is well over an hour away and even when you get down off the mountain will have a drive back to Maricopa, Gila Bend or Buckeye (depending on your personal route).

Cell reception is decent at times, but you will likely be roaming the entire time and your battery will suffer. Can't recommend it enough, very cool climb all around and glad I went.

Steep climb and great views. Love it.

Lovely view of Sedona at the top.
