August 2017 Map

We hiked this trail many times. It is always good.

As of 2/18/18, there’s plenty of snow. The views are beautiful, and the trail isn’t too steep. The trail is pretty easy to follow. I loved the surrounding views of mountains and frozen lakes. Not too crowded. We will be back.

Great hike! This area is beautiful

A good amount of snow today, but snowshoes weren’t needed. This would be a great summer time trail.

One of my favorite places to hike.
I prefer winter months but spring is excellent too.

Very nice hike and overnight stay at Roundtop.

Nice hike.... tough uphill once you start heading up to the lake. We went Labor Day and it was stupid crowded! Kids screaming, girls yelling, drones flying..... anything but peaceful. Caught some fish and fried up some dove breasts my brother brought....

Go light there are lots of rocky areas and climbs my gaia gps tracked us at more like 4.3 mi id say its not a beginner trail its probably the hardest trail ive backpacked then a day hike to the surrounding peak was awesome
My buddy caught 2 fish and put them back. The water was refreshing after the days hike. Late august the trail is hard to follow with out the homemade markers it would have taken alot longer

Great hike! We just went out for the afternoon but saw a lot of people camping! Views of Island Lake are gorgeous!

Crowded. Otherwise perfect.

Awesome meandering hike along beautiful isolated Aline lakes. No elevation changes to worry about.

Great for the lake and proximity. But in July 2017, the snow and snow melt made it very difficult to find the trail very often. Probably the worst trail conditions for a July-August trip I've been on due to the snowy conditions and the number of trail creek crossings.

It's a rocky road driving up but well worth it. Gorgeous lakes galore!

The scenery on this hike is epic, right now is an excellent time to go! The trail is clear all the way to Penner Lake (July 3rd), and there are still big patches of snow in a lot of spots off the trail that make for some awesome pictures. I went around to the far side of Penner and back, and GPS logged the total distance at 7.2 miles. Also lots of nice dispersed camping options along the way.

The road goes from paved to dirt and rocky once you turn onto Forest Route 17. Although there were many lower clearance cars parked up there too I was glad I had my high clearance Tacoma, especially at the very top just before the parking area at Carr Lake.

I absolutely loved this loop. Definitely use the app throughout as there is still snow patches and felled trees that cause you to loose the trail but eventually I found it. Passed about 8 gorgeous lakes! Favorites were Island, Penner and Milk. I will definitely do some disperse camping up here next time but was lucky enough to snag a site at Carr Lake. Highly recommend and not too difficult of a "long" hike. Not too much elevation gain.

Beautiful alpine habitat and scenery!

Took my six year old for his first pack-in backpacking trip. He left wanting more, which was perfect!

The road in is a little choppy. We have a mid-sized SUV and I was worried about bottoming out in spots. There's fresh bear poop and scratchings around, so handle your food situation properly!

All in all, a great place, if a bit crowded at times.

This was an easy 3-4 hour hike, mostly flat with a bit of a climb at the very end. The lakes were stunning! Will definitely do this trail again and would feel comfortable taking friends & family who aren't seasoned hikers.

Took my 7 yr old on his first backpacking trip. Perfect first trip! Campsite permits are first come first serve at the trail head. Night #1 at camp just NW of Winne Lake, great views of valley to West to Caples. Night #2 at camp overlooking North side of Lake. Day hiked to Round Top Lake, summited Sisters and got pretty close on Round Top, get's sketchy for a little guy. Great trip!

I'd say this is definitely not a beginner trail. Lots of rock scrambles and a trail that is not so well marked in places. However, the payoff at the end is worth the effort.

With a weekend supply backpack this can be a challenging trail (especially the last third) if you are in less then fair/good health. We hiked it June 2016 and there were a lot of down trees, sketchy creek crossing and though there are trail blazes we found at times that we had to rely on stacked rocks from past hikers to help guide the way. We stayed 2 nights and it was absolutely beautiful there. We would absolutely go back again but the lack of fish made for a not so exciting weekend. We seriously saw no activity on the surface of the water or under or any signs of life other than frogs at night. Plan on instead of fishing to hike to the falls (May-June) that are visible from the lake.

Easy trail. Nice views. There was a lot of snowpack so first timers should have your alltrails going.

It was beautiful! Bugs are stating to be out & we did mot make it all the way due to snow, glad we wore boots, very wet. We will go again in the fall

It was a cool hike. There was lots of snow on the ground. At parts there was a snow path on top of the regular path. Bring hiking shoes, and trekking poles if you have them if you go around may or early June, at least this year anyways.

Penner Lake is an excellent destination with breathtaking views

great family hike

I visited bull run lake in October. It was an easy hike and great for beginners. Only 3.5 miles in but you feel like you are much deeper into the back country. Very pretty. And fishing was ok, despite what other reviews might say. We had some success.

First family backpacking trip! Hiked into Island Lake with my wife and 4 children. Son 11 and 3 daughters 10, 7 and 5. The trail was not too difficult and had great scenery. The few climbs came with breaks but each child made it even though they each carried their own clothes, water, pillow and sleeping bags; except for the youngest who had her own water and clothes. The trail was busy and many hiked past to Penner Lake. The weather was perfect and the water was great! Perfect family oriented place to hike and camp. Next time on to Penner!
