The hike in and out isn’t too spectacular, going in you have a nice vista of the surrounding mountains but they quickly disappear. Personally I found this trail more annoying to descend, it’s very rocky and rutted up by horses (which, I’m not sure this is the best trail for horses...) if it’s wet at all it becomes very marshy and muddy. The payoff is more than worth it and I definitely plan to hike this trail again and spend time in the backcountry. There is much to see and enjoy. The hike out was not bad and the ascent is spread out. I only remember one difficult hill that’s about 2/3 of the way back, the rest is easily manageable. Also I only logged 640ft of elevation gain and I was back and forth on some of the trail multiple times so I think the 1000 some feet of elevation gain isn’t quite right. It’s definitely not that severe.

The trail is OK at the best. We got there on Nov 7 and it was 2-3 weeks too late. Leaves are mostly down and it made very rocky trail even less pleasant. But if leaves would be still there - the view has nothing unique or breathtaking about it. If you are going to walk it make sure to give yourself plenty of time especially now, when at 5 pm it is already very dusky and at 6 pm is very dark! If you'll walk it clockwise, decent is very rough and rocky. Makes very unhappy ankles. Very short distance after beginning of decent trail crosses a road. Walk it down till you get to a point of re-entry to the trail. Your ankles and your back will thank you.
Keep in mind that there is no phone/internet service at the trailhead and on most of the trail. LTE was at the top and in a few places on the east side of the trail.

Fun trail! might be a little strenuous in some spots for beginners and if the water is up along with the rapids its a challenge to cross to the trail head safely, but a great day hike regardless! Seems like a great camping spot as well

This hike was a beast for me! Partially due to the fact that my brother lied and said it was rated moderate to get me to join in, lol. It’s a workout both ways but the hollow is breathtaking. When we went the waterfall was pretty light but still beautiful. This was my entryway to the world of hiking and I will always remember it fondly ❤️

Beautiful views

Beautiful and hard...and worth it, for sure!!! Wear solid shoes, have your first-aid kit, and enjoy the views. Breathtaking!

Absolutely Beautiful! Some of the prettiest country I have ever seen.

Very well marked. Hope to do an overnight soon and visit the entire trail.

It was a difficult trail for me to complete, but I loved it.

great views of the trees at the vistas. the kids loved it. highly recommended.

Beautiful trail and views. Devils den has an amazing camping area as well. They have multiple trails in the area that will easily keep you busy all weekend.

Very nice hike. Heavily trafficked.

We loved this hike, it was challenging!

Great little hike! Took my time heading down, went down to the falls and then doubled back over to the river. Didn’t time the trek as a whole, started off a little before 1pm and took my time at the river, the 2.3mi hike back up took 50 minutes for me at a steady pace.

A good trail with rewarding views at the top. You must put forth an effort to see the views, but that’s why we hike, right? Once you’re at the top make sure to check out the rim trail with great views all around. Rocks here are covered with beautiful, vibrant moss a lichen. There is also a water spigot at the top with clean water if you want to fill up. Do not camp at the top if you are backpacking.

The Big Bluff is very cool with Amazing scenery. I would definitely rate higher than Whitaker Point.

We started this trail and hopped on Buckeye trail at the end. Caney Creek ran along the creek which didn’t make it a very moderate hike, a lot of the time we were walking on the valley. There were a few small water crossings, nothing extreme. If you take this trail I recommend hiking Buckeye at the end (there’s a decent pile of rocks to the right of a camping area heading up the mountain and that’s Buckeye trail).

Prepare for an uphill hike similar to mountain climbing and lots of stream crossings. Beautiful hike. Rightfully rated hard!

Great view. May get a little boring on the way out.

Always a great hike. Always a ton of people. But you can’t beat the view.

Amazing views of the buffalo river valley well worth the hike.

Not a bad trail that has some nice overlooks and rock formations, but it was crowded and not well marked in areas, we had to turn around a couple of times. Also, beware of snakes, we saw a black snake(no biggie) and a copperhead right on the trail. Definitely worth a look, but nothing mind blowing.

P.s. go during the week if you can, too many people kinda put a damper on this for us tbh.

Absolutely love this trail & so does my pup! Just know that the trail is very thin & you will be running into people, going around people, walking past other dogs, etc. This is a very busy trail, but a beautiful one! Yellow Rock Overlook is gorgeous!!

We hiked the entire Buckeye/Caney East loop. The Caney Creek East trail, although quite a bit easier than the Buckeye trail, still has a few uphill/downhill sections that when worn out from the Buckeye trail will feel almost as challenging! But I’m sure avid hikers with well conditioned legs will find it rather easy. Very pretty walking along the creek. 3 easy crossings, just be cautious on the wet and slippery rocks. We had lots of rain the entire hike but it was still a very nice trail. Mostly clear with some downfall and lots of deep puddles when raining. Boots were full of water when we reached the car!
Fun times and beautiful area.

Yes it is a climb up but it isn’t as hard as a lot of people have said. Bring water and some snacks. There are a few places to stop on the way to take a break if needed. The waterfall was only a trickle but that meant we didn’t get wet crossing the streams. Truly a sight to see!

Amazing views that are well worth it. Bring lots of water! I logged 14 miles the first day just doing this trail and bouncing around various river trails. Save some energy and water for the hike back!!!! It’s all uphill and seems to never end. Loved this trail.
