Four of us attempted with micro spikes today. Traction is a must. Tried snowshoes, but mine are more for flat surfaces and not the slopes mountain side. About 3-3.5 miles in the post-holing begins, but manageable up to the saddle. The trail disappears from the saddle to the Peak due to snow and wind each day up there. We made the call to turn around due to the unknowns ahead. We will be back! I should mention that two other hikers with crampons did make the summit, and mentioned that snowshoes would not have been useable beyond the saddle due to the difficult terrain.
Super easy out and back. We went in winter. A light poof jacket was the correct choice. We went just past the end of the trail to the flat rock above ( slightly dicey but doable). The view was fantastic. Not to mention the lack of sound. Completely, peacefully, quiet. It would make a great spot for an afternoon meditation. We tried to find the caves on the way back but got a touch lost. I think I can find it next time. Just had bad intelligence. If you are looking for them, turn right when you see the giant ‘Allagator tree’ on your right.
Beautiful trail through the Boynton Canyon Vortex. We took the side trail to the cave and ruins and was totally worth it. Then we hike through forest to get to end of trail. Hike just a bit further and there are nice views of the canyon.
Fairly easy if staying on Boynton Canyon Trail, beautiful! If you’re lucky enough to find your way to Subway Cave it’s a little dicey climbing up into it...just take your time, well worth the effort!
I did boynton canyon trail to the end. Where it says trail ends, keep going to your right across the flat rock area. You’ll be rewarded with amazing views. On the way back I located secret cave. It’s not a well established trail and hard to find but it’s worth it. Cool cave and native ruins.
good hike didn't go to the end but found the secret cave. not easy to find at all.
Beuatiful trail. Lots of people, I suggest you go early. We took off the trail to the cave. Was worth it. ;) Very unique formation.
a really lovely alpine hike, though in the winter it's completely snow covered. easy trail to follow until you get toward the top, at which point you'll need snowshoes or crampons. I had to turn back about a mile from the top next time!
Loved it! Any trail in Sedona is worth it.
Beautiful hike to the vista and ending at the cave/ruins.
The trail was amazing. We didn’t do the whole hike based on other comments. We took the detour to the subway cave. If you just follow my recording it’ll take you there. The cave is top 3 favorite views.
Great hike, if you can make it to the cave, it's spectacular! The entrance to the path off Boynton Trail looked different today because there were lots of brush pulled across the path. Ask for help, the entrance is about 1/2 mile from the somewhat large, 2 ft high stump by the Trail. Then it's another 1/2 mile thru the brush up to the cave.
Beautiful trail! Well kept. Snow is deep, and your feet will punch through pretty often. Don’t step even a few inches off the packed path! You’ll be up to your knee or hip in snow. We wore ice crampons (necessary) and used our poles (also necessary). We didn’t use/have snowshoes, but we also didn’t summit - those are related. Today’s weather was warm (37°?) and absolutely spectacular. Challenging trail, but enjoyable and beautiful. We met only three other hikers throughout our day.
This is a lovely trail but was a bit dicey to run on if trail running is your goal. Narrow path in some areas, loads of people, super rocky... but, honestly, maybe I just couldn't find my groove today? Well worth the detour to the Vortex (via the Vista trail close to the trailhead). The views from the Vista are phenomenal and there is without a doubt a special energy there.
Simply Amazing. We started this hike at 4pm ish and made it to the top of the Canyon as the sun went down. Hiked back out in the moonlight slow and steady. Loved this hike:... moderate and hard in a few rocky, icy, snowy spots. But so worth it!!!!
so amazing, so beautiful
The hike is worth waking up early for. We hiked this on a Monday and once we returned to our vehicle at around 10, the parking lot was full.
