WalkingGreat!

This is a wide paved path with lots of benches along the way to take in the gorgeous views. Do not confuse wide paved path with easy to walk up path. The path is very steep, so plan to take your time. My four year old did not love the steepness. The path and clingman’s dome were very crowded. This walk is entirely for purpose of saying you visited one of the tallest peaks, not for enjoying serenity of nature. Both the Appalachian Trail and the Mountains-to-Sea trail intersect with this path - be sure to take a few steps on them and take a picture with the trail signs to say you were there (haha). Consider bringing extra water and treats for the hardcore AT hikers who stopped here to rest a bit.

The trail was smooth and with the pavement, available to all! A must see for the awesome views but plan on a clear day.

Steep for sure, but good paved path and beautiful views along the trail and worth it even on a cloudy day to make it to the top.

Any one know when this will reopen. Website shows April 23rd but based on reviews not sure if that is realistic. Thx

Amazing views at the top! We went late in the afternoon and avoided the big crowds but there were still quite a few people around. Steep incline, be prepared

What a workout! Super steep (16% grade climb). Be prepared but the 360 degree views are worth it!!

Beautiful view - just as pretty from the parking lot as from the dome itself. Really crowded.

Walking

The Bypass trail back down was much quieter than the busy paved trail, albeit a good bit longer (guessing that trail was about 1.3-1.4 versus the paved wall of 0.5?). It was pretty rocky, some of it some loose rocks. But peaceful. And we checked off our Smokies “bingo” card by running into a couple of AT thru hikers who’d come up from Georgia!

Closed. Unable to access trailhead due to bridge work. Bridge work appears to need several months before completion. Walked up and down from the bridge, no way to cross water without wading.

Went on the first day it opened- April 1 2021. Super freezing ice cold at the top but SO worth it. Gorgeous views! A hefty hike up to the top with elevation but easy way down.

Awesome views at sunset! The walk up is only 0.5 mi but is decently steep. It was cold up there! Temp in the parking lot was 18 (about 40-45 at the base of the mountain) and once you climb up was probably closer to 0 with the wind chill. Got some amazing pictures and totally worth it all.

If you get out early and in good weather it’s a wonderful view. Very steep and brutal hike to the summit but well worth it. Also good to bring some tick repellent in the summer cause there were thousands of ticks at the observation tower

HikingGreat!

We just returned from our "socially-distanced" spring break to the SMNP. The road to Clingman's Dome was closed and this was a real gift for us. We (our family of 4-parents and boys ages 15 and 16) decided to walk the road to Clingman's Dome. It was possibly the quietest place in the park. There were wonderful views along the road and we encountered about 10 people at the dome (AT hikers), but had the dome to ourselves for a solid 5 minutes. On the return we saw about 20 people and most of those were within 2 miles of Newfound Gap road. The whole walk took 6.5 hours and 15.5 miles roundtrip from the Newfound Gap parking lot (but it is better to park at the gate of the road). We started at sunrise and I would recommend watching the sunrise from the first overlook on the road to Clingman's Dome-about 1/2 mile in. The day we went was 24 F when we started and about 45 when we finished. Wear layers and bring plenty of food, and water. We highly recommend this if you are there in the off-season.

I’ve done this trail before. I my opinion it’s the best “bang for your buck” when it comes to difficulty with a wonderful reward at the end. My family hadn’t done it before so we wanted to go, but as of 3/29/21 it is still closed. We’ll just have to come back.

Decided to go up road and back on AT given not open to autos yet. Very surreal with no cars abs the fog. Seemed as though the Zombie Apocalypse had taken place. Especially seeing several hikers in the dense fog. Fun hike! Without all the people and autos.

Great!

Drove all the way up just to find that this was closed. Drove 11 hours to stay in Gatlinburg a week. The last day was beautiful for hiking. Headed up and it was closed with a gate 7 miles out due to 'road work'. Really disappointing. With 3 kids we couldn't do the other ones due to length and/incline.
