We started on the trailhead around 9:30 and were back at our car at 3:00pm - best time of day to avoid hiking in the heat! Tons of shade in the morning on the way out, and tons of yuccas, trees, and shrubs filled the canyon. The river crossings (there are many) were a bit dicey on the rocks, so get good boots or walk through the shallow water rather than risk a bad slipping off rocks! Watch your footing, too - there’s a lot of loose gravel and a few narrow stretches of the trail. Bring at least 150oz of water per person, wear jeans and a wide brimmed hat - you’ll be glad you did! It’s amazing to bring lunch or food snacks to enjoy near the pools under the bridge.

THE GOOD: Amazing views, lovely vegetation, mix of shade and sun, and having lunch under the bridge. You really feel the river come alive, seeing it rush with deep pools and twists and bends. Bonus - you might see bighorn sheep!

THE BAD: The trail was much more crowded than it was during my last weekend visit 6 years ago, and the bungee jumping operation has totally taken over the vibe of the bridge area. Go on a weekday you have off to avoid the crowds and bungee jumpers. Also, watch out for the yuccas on the trail! They will get your legs - jeans are recommended.

This was my third time on the trail, and I took two friends who had never been. It’s always an adventure, and the lush growth really gave the terrain an ethereal, almost Jurassic look - a special canyon hike I hope to return to!

Did the Devil's backbone on the way up, came down Baldy Bowl trail. Coming down was a killer. But a great challenging hike!

Did the hike today. Trail was very nice, very gusty winds and it does get below freezing with the wind chill starting after the ski center. Recommend dressing appropriately. Devils backbone trail was clear, no snow until you get close to summit and even then only a few patches. Fantastic views, the most significant wildlife I saw was a cat at the ski center.

For first timers, start early, pack layers, go up the Baldy Notch trail as opposed to the ski-hut trail since you do a more gradual ascent on Baldy Notch (6.5 miles) as opposed to Ski Hut trail (3.5 miles with same ascent) . Also be prepared for the serious ascent after you get pass the ski hut, you're going to work those legs as everything leading up to Devils backbone and through it will be pretty steep climb.

Great for the sunrise. Amazing views from the top and on the way down (I went counterclockwise). For a stretch you hike down the gentle backbone of one of the mountains and get amazing views of LA and the canyons. Saw a bobcat in the am by the entrance/river. Followed Justin’s recording and didn’t end up straying from the path. On a weekday hike not very crowded. Not much shade. Trail is varied—some scattered rocks, some packed soil, some river runoff and fire trail. Overall a great hike

Did this hike yesterday with a friend, our first time doing this. We planned on doing the hike via devil's backbone and down but we took the wrong trail and playfully hiked a few miles and relized we were at the ski hut. probably one of the best mistakes we did during this hike, our knees thanked us when we got back down via backbone. The weather was pleasant with occasional gusts which felt very chilly but the sun being out almost all day helped. Views on the way up and down were spectacular. All in all a difficult hike made easy by the good weather and amazing views.

Short and fun. 1 blowdown and not well marked by the creek bed. Pretty simple though.

Really nice hike with a diverse set of landscapes that follows the river, and consists of some light rock scrambling, river crossing, and lovely views. The river crossings are incredibly fun and a great way to keep yourself cool on a hot day. It is possible to prevent your feet from getting wet by walking over rocks, but it can be slippery so I would anticipate getting your shoes wet, even if only slightly. A friend and I decided that it’s a great hike to take visitors from out of town!

Absolutely fantastic! Challenging is an understatement. Did it alone and never got lost. The view up top was beautiful! Definitely pack warm gear because it was maybe 40 degrees with a 50 mile per hour wind gusts early this morning. Loved it!!!

One of my favorite 'local' hikes. The most difficult portions is the final climb right before the summit and the rest of the decline since I am somewhat clumsy coming down. Views were great except for the summit since it was in a haze with lots of wind.

Loved this trail, will definitely do it again.

Great hike! Don’t try this if you have bad knees as the downhill section will be torture. Luckily for me my knees are not completely gone but I definitely was feeling it.

This was a super fun trail with lots of river crossings. We were surprised at how much water was there at the end of summer. My 8 year old was a champ it made it past the bridge to some fun swimming holes. We took about 4-5L of water each and some food and we were good! Took about 3 hours to the bridge. Clocked around 11 miles total. We followed “the hiking guys” step by step trail photos and that was super helpful because it is not well marked.

My third time doing this hike but first time doing the loop counter clockwise which I was told is "easier". I didn't think so. I prefer clockwise because the down portion the way back from the peak is brutal and you don't get that treat of an ice cold craft beer at the lodge.

TIPS: pack lots of water; do the loop counter clockwise so you can spend some time drinking a beer at the lodge at the end; don't forget your Adventure Pass.

Fun hike. no trail markings though, so get ready to create your own trail!

Great short hike, offered a little bit of challenge with some incline coming back out of the punch bowl but that only added to the value of the hike for me. Interesting views and and rock formations. The loop took about an hour to hike.

Amazing. Good amount of traffic so my small dog and I never felt totally threatened. However I did lose my car keys so if anyone finds them help a sister out

Loved this hike! Its not an easy hike, but doable. We were exhausted from the bare heat exposure on the 4th mile to the bridge. There are some amazing water holes below the bridge, so we were able to cool off. We also brought sandwiches with us to eat lunch there. Bring water and electrylotes to replenish. Thanks to this app, I had a peace of mind that we stayed on track.

This isn’t a trail for first timers. The last mile and a half is on an incline. Bring lots and lots of water with electrolytes! To get to the pools under the bridge requires skimming across a small 1 foot ledge of rock. Was absolutely drained and cramping on the way back because I didn’t take enough water. You should take a minimum of 3.5L. I’d do it again but after a year of training...lol

Okay. AllTrails could use a "this campground costs money" marker, somehow. I mean, I could of looked up but myself before, but didn't even think about it. And if you want a good back country camp experience, stay away from Buckhorn camp. We should of set up shop at Cooper Canyon Camp, went to the falls & came back for the evening. Started off at the trailhead, went into the canyon & made it to the falls. For those who had trouble, so did we, but it's a matter of following the stream/creek bed to the junction of Buckhorn Camp & the PCT - just past the 2.7 mile mark on this map, moving on the PCT route. Very quickly you will find a couple precarious looking paths to the left & if you head down, you'll find the ropes that lead you into the pool. We had it to ourselves & it was very enjoyable! Some tiny fish. A little moss. Some drip-drops from the falls...very nice. After that, we made our way to Buckhorn Camp...which, is the campground I wanted to visit, but when we got there, found it to be a "car camping" place. Ended up walking back to our car because we didn't bring cash (all spots were full anyway).

Overall good experience, great trail, but not having a place to camp was disappointing, since that was the main reason for our trip.

Good hike with a interesting destination. We stayed overnight at the campsites just past the bridge. The trail is a bit difficult to keep track of in some areas, especially as you get closer to the river. Lots of side trails that lead to nowhere (presumably from all of the gold miners in the area). The trail itself not too strenuous. Much of the trail is in direct sun (depending on the time the canyon walls give some shade).Some portions are covered in Yucca.

The campsite at the end of the trail was great. Plenty of trees for hammocks, the river has a ton of good watering holes for swimming and you are pretty secluded from all the day hikers checking out the bridge. The trail shortly after the bridge to the campsites is a little precarious with a sheer drop on one side and about only a foot of width at its narrowest. I wouldn't attempt it at night.

On a negative note this is probably the most littered trail I have ever hiked. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, if you are going to hike this trail pack out your trash. I lot count of the bottles and beverage cans I saw along the trail. Even worse was all of the TP lining many points on the trail (if you gotta go, go a 200 ft away from trails, no one wants to step in some else's dirty toilet paper).

Love this hike, features beautiful scenery throughout. Lots of shades & creeks along the trails from beginning till the end. It averages about 6-7 hours, but worth every minute.

Not really sure why I am writing this review since I've done this hike several times, but here we go, this hike is only as hard as you make it seem, crossing some water and getting wet ads up to how hard it could get, you don't need to get wet in order to cross the water, just be creative and you'll be fine, also, the later you go in the day, the harder it gets due to the sun hitting you directly at the stretch of the hike before getting to the bridge itself, so the earlier you start the better since there is some shade, on your way back it feels sort of like a different hike, which is nice, there is no way of getting lost, follow the stream and you'll be fine.

Good hiking shoes and always recommend since this a rocky hike, several parts of this trail has lots of rocks, the more you hitting for obvious reasons, you will eventually start to feel it and get tired (see where I'm getting with the it's only as hard as you make it seem), bring plenty of water, sunscreen and sun glasses.

It's a fun hike, you feel pretty good once you get to the bridge which you can dip in the water down below. just be careful while getting down there as its rocky and steep, and you will also feel really good on your way back.

My recent group I went with, we started at 7 am and we were done by 12ish, easy 10-11 mile hike, give it a try.

this was the best hike we've been on yet plenty of water plenty of pools deep enough to get in lots of solitude and hardly any people and plenty of shade too
