Went snowshoeing 1/12/19 after 8-10” fresh snow on unbroken trail. Absolutely wonderful trail with many ups n downs, really well marked, spectacular views on an azure blue pristine ice cold day! Temps started at 5* and ended at 13*. Highly recommend this trail for folks of moderate fitness. We are all in our 50’s and it was a good workout. Very good trail!

Climbed on 1/12/19. We used snowshoes but they weren’t necessary. Spikes would have been fine. Trail nicely packed down and well marked. Beautiful views

We hiked the steeper trail up and back in hiking boots this morning. Fresh layer of powder! Quite a bit of scrambling but nothing too difficult... a delightful find!

Nice views, nice workout. Micro spikes needed as of 1/6, ice underneath a few inches of snow for most of the trail.

Beautiful trail with great views from balancing rocks. Summit is completely wooded so keep that in mind but has some great viewing areas along ridge. Some sections are icy so I would say microspikes are necessary. The way up to balancing rocks is the hardest part but the rock scrambles were really fun and icy!

Did this hike over the summer with my 10 year old daughter. Spent at least a half day venturing to the falls and a little further up. Well marked trail, some stone jumping if you're up for it. The falls is well worth the hike.

Very short trail for decent views. Starts pretty easy then climbs up a rock face. Micro spikes essential there as it gets pretty icy. Great to throw on at the end of a long day.

Great easy hike to start a day. Took only about 20 minutes to reach the summit. Last stretch is a bit steep and icy but nothing too serious. Anybody really could do this hike. Micro-spikes are needed though since a bit icy near summit

Nice short trail to start the day. Goes up about half way in. Had to work a bit. Yaks were the way to go. A warm up a few days before and it was mostly ice - and snow under ice. Nothing terribly treacherous with the right footing. Nice view at the top.

Hiked this on 12/12/2018. Nice hike exactly as advertised in the above description. Trail was well broken in so micro's were the only need. Nice sunny day relatively warm (30s). Woods were very quiet. Lots of deer track in the trail. Nice of us humans to break the trail out for them! Snow got a little soft from the pre-summit to the very top. Great views of Gore in the distance.

Great trail for winter or summer. Note: the trail head is at the back of the school and google maps will take you to the front. we were a bit confused by this. Easy path was relaxing, great snowshoeing. Harder trail was fun, more work. Hand over hand, use of rope. I would recommend up the harder trail and down the easier trail, or inexperienced/younger snowshoers skip hard trail all together. perfect morning hike without full day commitment of a peak or tower.

360° amazing views, great trail ,we enjoyed it.

SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult in the snow. Especially if you take the “hard way” do not attempt the hard way in the snow unless you have winter climbing gear. I got all the way up to the rock face and in 2 feet of snow and nothing but a backpack and hiking boots it is basically impossible. The long way is almost equally as difficult once it gets steep. Attempt this in the spring or fall instead for sure :)

First time out in snowshoes. Had to take long way in and out due to trail conditions. Total time was a little more than 2 hours. Nice trail. As the climb got steeper it got harder but never really to bad. Was a great view at the top.

Great trail. Well marked and very scenic trail. You circle the mountain so a good portion of the trail is sloping to the side. the view from the top is fantastic. You don't have to be an expert hiker to do this trail.

Great small hike. 700ft in 1.2miles up gets your heart pumping. Probably 4-6inches of snow and icy conditions but doable in hiking boots. Some had mirospikes on that helped in the icy areas. Awesome views of Schroon Lake.

We hiked in from Windfall trailhead on a very windy, wintery day. It is mostly flat with a few uphill climbs but nothing terrible. Most of the hike is forest but at some random spots you get a nice pond or lake view. Pretty soggy but it had rained and snowed most of the night before.Ended at the queer lake lean-to for lunch and headed back. Took about 3.5 hours round trip.

nice woodsy hike. We hiked it as it was snowing, and the whole forest was beautiful in the snow. We took the steep way up and the easy way down. Steep way was great, easy way was basically hiking through a river. Great views of the lake though!

What a Great Hike! One steep part but lots of trees & roots to hold onto. The waterfalls along the way are Gorgeous!

Baxter Mountain is a great hike for anybody. I would suggest however wearing micro-spikes as it was dicey in spots. The views, although cloudy were good. I’m not sure most people, at least since the snow has fallen, have gone to the “true summit” as there were no footprints down the col and up the summit. It’s wooded with not much to see, but for the purists, lol.

Completed on 10/18. There was a dusting of snow on the trail. We did the "hard" up and "short" down, I recommend that way. You get a couple nice spots for views on that way up that you don't get the way down. I also found it easier to go the steep section than down it. Overall not a bad little trail, views would be harder to see if there were still leaves on the trees. Part of the Lake Placid 9.

The trail was in great shape and I made the 2 mile hike without too much effort. The flooded beaver dam wasn't an issue as I was able to rock hop across the outlet. The big pines are always impressive.

Parking is on private land. Please respect the landowners generosity.

Great views! Take the ‘harder way up’; it is definitely worth it.

Challenging for 2nd hike of life but definitely worth the effort. Make sure to go to all three falls and bring a camera. We got some great shots. Would like to hike again in summer and get some swimming in the water holes around the falls. Saw eleven people during trip in and out.

Nice day hike today up Baxter. Many switchbacks and a relatively easy trail. Good trail to run up or down. Nice views but had some cloud cover and flurries. Foliage just past peak but still nice color!

Very family and dog friendly trail. A couple of scrambles but nothing too difficult. Well maintained with great views at and near summit.

A beautiful 1+ hour hike. We took the right hand fork - it was a wide flat trail for the first half mile with the rocky inclines thereafter. The trails are well marked but with all the options and trail crossings, best to check the app periodically to ensure you don’t get off the proposed loop. At the far end you end up in a Whiteface Mountain parking lot. Take a hard left and cross over to access trail system back to starting point. The remainder of hike is a gentle downhill on a wide trail with views of the river.

great little hike ut was raining the whole time but still nice view at the top

We walked to Jockeybush en-route to a bushwhack to Iron Lake. The trail was wet and muddy, but not a problem. The middle half of the trail is a big seep and always wet. The lower and upper end were great! The creek crossing was a little sporty on wet rocks.

Take a few minutes and explore the fisherman's path to the two designated campsites on the north shore of the lake. The view is glorious and there's some nice places to sit and enjoy the scenery.

Great hike. I couldn't see much of anything on the top of Peaked Mountain yesterday, but I didn't mind... the Brook trail (filled with marshes and lush beauty) made my day : ) It was a nice change of pace to hike a trail not entirely made up of rocks too... some of them got slippery approaching the summit though, so next time I'll pick a day when it's not raining to see the view : )
