Did this one as part of the Catskill Firetower Challenge. The biggest challenge is perhaps just making it to the trailhead as it’s rather remotely located. The hike was a very quick jaunt to the top to see the observers cabin, luxury outhouse and of course the tower. The views were good from the tower.

I consider this hike to be like a salad and steak type of hike. The road to the top (which is 2.5 miles making this actually a 5 mile hike) is rather mundane. However, when you get to the hotel ruins, it’s fascinating to explore. You then do the last pitch up to the summit to see a great Firetower and without a doubt the best views in the Catskills. We got there at 8:00 and got good parking. We were back at 10:15 and the parking lot was full. There is more parking 1/2 mile up the road, but this will add a mile to your hike. The best Firetower hike in the Catskills.

I’m probably not giving this trail the best review I could because I did this one right after hiking Hunter. The trail, while reasonable, just seemed to go on and up forever. It was also incredibly windy and bitingly cold. The Firetower is in good shape and the views were good. I’d like to try this one without having done something like Hunter first.

We did this trail on the weekend as part of the Catskill Firetower Challenge. The actual out and back (you don’t have to do the loop) is more like 7 miles. It’s a steady rise for the first part up a road/horse path, then pitches a little steeper for the second half. The trail is o good shape, no great views though. We got to the summit and were greeted with a blizzard white out, so now views from the tower. I’d suggest that if you’re not up for the 2000 ft in 2 miles elevation of the other trail, this is a great option.

Awesome views!!! Really bummed about the communication tower. However, it did sound like a passing helicopter, HA! It was a very nice hike, other than that. The stream is just beautiful. It was very wet today, maybe it’s not always like that, but we didn’t mind at all. We just changed socks at the top and we were all just fine. Trail was easy to follow and will be back in the summer.

I really liked this hike, although the trail goes up, up and up some more. I did Hunter just before Tremper, so perhaps I didn’t get a fair assessment of it. It was extremely cold and blustery on the summit. Great views. No microspikes needed quite yet, lots of mud/water at the lower elevations. A great hike though.

Did this one today from the Spruceton Road Trailhead. This route is 7 miles round trip with 2000 + feet of elevation. The summit was in blizzard like conditions, but I never needed microspikes, although I had them. No views due to snow squall, but a great hike nonetheless.

The ruins were really cool to see and the view from the top is beautiful

Hiked on November 3rd. Absolutely beautiful trail. A couple tricky mini scrambles, that would've been less tricky if they we're as wet and slippery. Views are amazing, as expected. A bit of snow closer to the top.

Basically walking up a driveway. The hike itself isn't that visually stimulating but the views from the top are what make this a 5 star hike.

An exceptionally beautiful area and stunning views. The tower and summit were frozen and with ice along the upper parts of the trail on the rock scrambles, microspikes are a necessity. A great hike all around.

Hiked out and back on Tremper Mountain. Stopped to see the first lean-to. Very cool hike. Not very easy and not much to see on the way up. Fire tower was locked on Nov. 4, was told by other hikers that the tower is unlocked only on Summer Weekends when the groundskeeper is there.

We did this hike in possibly the worst weather conditions. Pouring rain so bad the trail became a stream. At the top it was mixed rain and sleet. On a nice day I would rate this trail moderately easy, under the conditions I did it in , it was all but easy.
I would do this again when conditions are favorable.

Trail is well marked, pretty steep climb in spots. Great views of the Catskills.

I was ready to hate this trail. It’s just uphill for 1,500ft of elevation on a fire road for almost an hour. Which is pretty awful. I have to say, once we got up to the abandoned hotel, and then probably one of the best overlooks I’ve seen? It is worth it. If you’re willing to put up with a craptacualr hike to see some cool shit, this is the trail.

Beautiful area of New York if you want to get out of the city. Single female 30 yo and went by myself. Took about 2.5 hours taking my time. The hike itself is mostly walking up a wide gravel path, there are no switchbacks or rock climbing. Loved seeing the old hotel and the view is worth the hike. I would recommend this to all ages and levels.

No rock scrambling or anything like that and not really even a trail but still tough because of the 2.5 mile walk all uphill until you reach the top. Amazing views just beyond the old hotel and an old fire tower that you can go up for even better views.

Very pretty but steep hike. Trail really isn’t hard because it’s more like a gravel road but the incline does dramatically increase at points. However on my way down I did see a toddler doing this so don’t be afraid! The view is stunning!

Great views of Lake George but the fact the fire tower has been transformed into a communication tower and the wind turbine sounds like a helicopter landing spoils the experience.

the first 45 min are tough as it is all uphill. the abandoned hotel and view up top are really nice and worth it :)

Just completed this trail earlier today. A great work out. Very lengthy up hill to start the trail in a counter clockwise direction. Pretty muddy at times, which is expected with the traffic and recent constant rain. Sudden 20 degree drop in temperature, sleet and severely windy as we reached the fire tower. Pleasant and appreciated descending trail back to spruceton road... Would definitely recommend for those looking for a workout. If you are solely looking for scenary, this trail may not be for you.

Actually icy spots on the trail today. Time to start getting the winter gear in the pack. Very enjoyable hike. Some steeps but not too long. Great views from the tower. The communication towers nearby detract from the natural beauty although it is nice to have a signal.

10/19/2018. 2 of us with a combined age of 134 did this in 4:30. I don’t think this is a hard hike as there was no scrambling. Yes to being a long trek and a good amount of ascent/descent. We wished we’d done the hike counter-clockwise as that way you’re descending without loose rocks and wet, slippery conditions. Tower views.

A very nice hike. Not overly challenging, but a rewarding view at the top.

An easy hike I’ve been doing since I was little with my family. Beautiful views and the tower is pretty cool!

A nice moderate intro to Catskills hiking with an honestly arduous climb to the summit, stunning views, a fire tower to play on, and gothic-like ruins of an abandoned hotel to ponder. Do continue another 1.5 miles to serene Echo Lake for its beauty and hiking variety. The downside: the trail to Overlook is more ho-hum gravel road than true trail (undergoing machine grading when I visited), and trailhead parking can be challenging during busy hiking times.

its is a tough trail going up and going down! yet its beautiful when you reach the top!

Beautiful hike with great views!! Heavily trafficked, but still worth doing!

Did this today with my two kids aged 10 and 13. Had an awesome hike. We forgot to bring water but some nice fellow hikers were kind enough to share with us. Thanks to Louise Hay and positive affirmations (had been listening to Louise in the car to the trailhead and my daughter did affirmations on water literally two minutes before some strangers offered water unprompted).

Way way too busy. Can’t enjoy the hike or the summit. Another victim of its own success. Parking lots and sides of road over run with cars. Inconsiderate people plying music and partying in summit. Not fun at all.
