Incredible hike! Summit is stunning. Fairly steep incline on the way up but manageable. Snowshoes were necessary.
Short but steep the last mile. Fun winter hike.
Like everyone else has said, it’s short but steep. If you take a right at the loop it’s definitely the more steep of the two ways to the top. Got a good little sweat in, 25 mins to the top, and then literally ran down the other side in 13 mins...38 mins total! Great little hike to get your heart pumping!
An inch of fresh power at the trail head. More powder the higher I went. 8-10 inches deep at the final steep climb. Broke trail the entire way. Top was the clearest deep blue sky I've seen in awhile. Perfect temp. Great day.
For .9 miles...this was STEEP!..highly recommend snow shoes as some of snow was soft...but to save your calves with the heel lifts! Great views from the top..awesome day!
Really quick and glorifying views! Slippery this time of year— if you have fold up sleds it would be a fun trail to sled down!
The combination of being short and high elevation makes it a pretty steep trail, make sure to use snow or spike shoes in the winter or you’ll be sliding down most of the way back pretty much like a bobsled ride (fun, if you’re into that)
Hiked this on 2/21/21. The first mile is a cakewalk, once you reach the cabin the uphill is unrelenting. I wore snowshoes the whole way (As recommended by the ADK Rangers) but I saw some people make do with just microspikes. The view from the fire tower was stunning on a clear, sunny day. Plus you can butt-slide halfway down the mountain if you don't feel like walking.
This is our fifth time up this mountain. We have even been up here in ice and some snow (late November). However, this is our first official winter climb. We couldn't have picked a better day. The trail was in perfect condition. A blue bird sky day. A little chilly in the tower cabin. We had the entire summit to our selves. Only ran into others on our snowshoe back down the mountain.
We used snowshoes from the trailhead to the top - unfortunately some people before us didn’t and the trail was heavily post-holed - fortunately the 3 inches of new snow allowed us to “repaired” it...
Gorgeous views from the summit. Trail was well packed and easy enough with crampons for the icey areas. Definitely had to earn it to get to the summit!
Did this trail this morning, after a snowfall, it was fun. A nice, steady climb. Super easy coming back down!!!
Quick up and back on Presidents’ Day Monday morning. Well broken out. Great views
Well packed and marked. Used and needed spikes (could use snow shoes if you want). Hiked with our small dog. Beautiful at the Balanced Rocks. Found a piece of camping gear on the way down. If you lost something there leave a note with how to contact you.
the trail is was open this winter alot of snow and alot of fun
Amazing. Beautiful day.
Feb 11, packed but snowshoes desirable, no issues , trail seems lightly used this winter. Very peaceful
