We broke trail from New Russia to RPR. Doesn’t look like this trailhead gets much winter use... last sign in the log book was in January. The trailhead lot was NOT plowed. Our car required 30minutes of digging out before we could leave.

Well packed. Parking lot is not plowed and is a mess.

SnowshoeingGreat!Snow

One of my favorite hikes? The forest felt like a winter wonderland and was so peaceful and serene. Views were great of Paradox Lake and Schroon Lake. The tunnels were my kids favorite part heading the traffic overhead. The Parking lot was an absolute mess though as it was not plowed.

Beautiful day! Went with my 5 year old and 59 year old mom and her friend. The trail was nicely packed for the most part. My daughter did slide a bit down some of the steeper sections where there was a few inches of fresh powder. No spikes needed. Snowshoes might be helpful.

Fresh snow squall before heading up, crunchy snow with fluff on top at the bottom and deeper fluff at top. Toss up between micro spikes and snowshoes. Went with micros and hike went fine. Nice view at top. Short but a nice.

HikingGreat!Snow

Nice hike today with the fresh snow that fell Saturday made the trail somewhat smoothed out. Followed a pair on snow shoe tracks all the way which made it easy and allowed me to enjoy the terrain a bit more than having to survey the trail markers. I left my snow shoes in the truck as there was only 4-6 inches of packed snow for most of the way to the summit. That said, snow shoes would have been preferred the last 1/4 mile as the snow was more fluffy and a lot deeper. Clouds and snow blowing on the summit didn’t provide a great photo opportunity but took a few shots and made my retreat down the mountain. All said the hike was +5 hours at a fairly steady pace with a couple of 10 minute breaks.

Hiking

If you ever get the chance to hike from Keene to New Russia. Do it. It’s highly worth it. The hike itself is very technical a requires lots of necessary equipment. We were able to do this hike without crampons but micro spikes and snow shoes were very helpful.

HikingGreat!

Slightly difficult to follow trail due to lack of markers like another reviewer mentioned. But not bad. We also broke trail. I used microspikes most of the way up and back which was quite helpful. beautiful views and fun hike.

Completed 10/18/18. Awesome trail, long but well worth the trip. My son was completing a hike for his hiking merit badge on this trail.

I packed this trail and it was definitely one of the hardest trails I’ve ever done. There was even a point when all I could do to get up a slope was swear my way through it. But the views and overall experience are so worth it.

trail was very difficult to follow because of the lack of markers, but other than that it was great hike, a little difficult since there was about a 10 inches of unbroken snow, so id recommend snowshoes for sure and without question microspikes.

HikingGreat!

Just a really pretty, lovely trail. Great to do in late fall, almost winter for good views of the lake. Did in summer as well with pharaoh mountain. A nice, gentle half day in the woods. Took time to tour all the lean tos.

Hiking

Great hike! I definitely would not try driving the road past the first trail parking area. It’s an easy walk anyway. Beautiful stream, worth a detour down there. We had to back track to find the right trail to avoid where the road is washed out a bit. After that, smooth going. Lovely lake, a sense of going deep into the woods, then the climbing to the top. Nothing too difficult. A few steeper slabs, recommend just being slow and cautious. Great views and area to explore on top. Wonderful day!

HikingScramble

it was great until it started to go up and was just too steep and dangerous for myself and my mom to continue, and we hike regularly. started to actually have a panic attack. it was wet, slippery, and just steep. im sure the top is lovely, but didn't happen this time around!

Did this trail, but in reverse; started at 73 and took the trail to summit of Giant, then hiked along the Rocky Peak Ridge. Kinda glad we did it in reverse because we got the hard part over with first. It snowed for most of the day, but the trial was very icy above 3,500 feet - microspikes are a must. The conditions made going slow for us, but it was an incredible hike and we finished before 4:00 PM.
