Solid day of hiking, completed all 5 peaks in the Dix Range. Started from the Elk Lake trailhead at 6am. Going up the slides of Macomb wasn't too difficult, just had to be very careful of each step as rocks could become loose and cause you to slip and fall possibly. Macomb was steep but offered great views. South Dix & East Dix (Grace Peak) were easy to get to, Grace had the better views. Hiking up Hough was tough and very steep. Hough to the Beckhorn & Dix was steep in a few spots but overall not too bad. Summited Dix by 12:30pm. Went down the trail via the Beckhorn, steep going down and a bit slippery. Total time of 10.5 hours (including an hour on top of Dix), 15.8 miles round trip.

Not as easy as the local reviews say it is! Definitely a challenge, but so worth it!

My son and I did Porter first, which was muddy in spots, but otherwise a really nice detour before going up Cascade. The views from Porter were better than expected. Cascade was spectacular! The rock scramble at the end was a good time. We stayed longer on Cascade, and had some food. The path from the trailhead is uphill from the start, with only a few very short level areas. It is also very rocky, and on the trek down this was a bit of a challenge. There were people of all ages and skill levels on the trial, and most people were very friendly and encouraging on the way up and down. The parking areas around the trailhead were packed by 10:00am, so get there early. We spent about 5 hrs on the trail, 4:19 minutes of actual hiking time. Two of my apps agreed on mileage, 7.1 for Cascade and Porter. Great hike and amazing views!

Great, steep hike, fun rock scramble at cascade, porter was super muddy

The view from MT Colvin is absolutely Amazing. So what if it is a little muddy at parts, its a mountain hike, that comes with the territory. There are some really fun scrambles. There is also a nice stream for a decent ways up the mountain to refuel. There are also about 4 spaces that you can camp in about 2 miles from the top. The best place to park is at a country club. It is right before a church on your left or after it on your right. Its a little sign with an A and another letter on it as a symbol. You drive up that rode until you pass by tennis courts. The foot trail begins a little down the road once you pass between them. So many high peaks to access from that trail.

Decided to stay an extra day after doing 4 of the Saranac 6 to get a High Peak in. We got a later start than we would have like and had to park about a mile down the road from the LOJ. It was overall a great hike the water was refreshing and the top had some good views. The top can be a little confusing because there are a lot of trails right at the peak but nothing to crazy.

Always a favorite. Great with my kids. We went early to beat the crowds and was worth it.

All in all a beautiful hike. We stayed true to Cascade. If you are new to hiking ( like many we passed as we made our way down) preparation is key. It’s definitely a hike, not a stroll. Wear appropriate footwear! I’m incredibly proud of our 4.5 year old son who made it to the summit and back with no assistance. Took us 4 hours car to car, with a nice break at the top and a few on the way up. We cruised down with ease. Parking was not an issue for us as we arrived early enough. View at the top was beautiful.

The hike up to Marcy Dam and then to the Phelps Trail cut-off is easy. The sign to Phelps at the cut-off reads 1.0 miles, but it is actually 1.2 miles. The 1.2 miles are a bit challenging, but nothing too difficult. At the top, there is a small trail to the right of a boulder that runs along the left side of the trail - take the trail (very short) for some very nice views.

Great great hike. Completed on 8/11. Pretty rocky on the way up (and down), but the views from Cascade are otherworldly and the rock scramble at the end is really fun. Lots and lots of people up there on a good weather Saturday. The trail to Porter was pretty muddy in places, but there are some nice, though less spectacular views at the top and along the way. Two of the 46 down!

Have not been up cascade in 10+ years so when I decided to make a trip up I made sure it was a Wednesday to avoid the crowds that clog up this trail on the weekends. Hit porter first so I could sit and enjoy myself longer on Cascade. View from Porter was pretty stellar. Took me about 20 mins to get to Porter from the trail junction and vice versa to get to cascade. Cascade summit is gorgeous with 360 degree views.

Start early and the crowds will be fine. Brought my beagle-basset and we had a blast.

Took 11 hours truck to truck. Would say I'm in OK shape. Get there early to get a spot to park. Did Macomb first, would recommend that way, wouldn't like going down the slide. If you went all the way to the bottom of slide you'd miss the trail too. Made it to Hough by 1145am started at 630am. On the way from Hough to Dix but before the intersection of Beckhorn trail you will find two large rocks forming a V shape. Don't go to the right or left go straight up the V.

Great hike. Amazing view from the top of cascade and porter.

Première ascension en Montagne pour mes filles et moi, (14 et 12 ans). Nous avons monté en 1h30 et redescendus en 1h10. Vue spectaculaire au sommet. Parcours un peu plus difficile a l’approche du sommet ⛰

Beautiful views and relatively easy trail!

Hiked in to Phelps from the Loj. I really don’t see any reason to do this mountain unless you are a trying to get all 46 High Peaks. Took 2.5 hours from the Loj and less than 2 to get back. The hike in is a lovely walk, but the trail up Phelps is a bit boring and pretty difficult, lots of roots and stones ......no views till the very end. I agree with another reviewer.... it IS a unique view of Marcy and the other high peaks in the area once you are on the summit. Of course I had a great time, I was hiking! But I would not climb this mountain again.

Relatively easy trail, usually busy. To me it feels like one big long staircase! Good for kids, nice view from the top
Porter is nothing special, though.

I didn’t think this trail was hard, but by husband did as he has bad knees. Summited in 3 hrs and about 2.5 hrs to descend. The views were nice although it was a cloudy day, I’m sure on a clear day it would be incredible. I would recommend poles if prone to knee strain.

Phelps and Tabletop are a good in and out if you want to tackle a couple of the 46 in a day. Visibility on Phelps was very limited but zero wind. Tabletop had very nice views when the clouds cleared. Pretty straight forward climb made more difficult with a full pack. We intended to summit Colden and camp at Lake Colden but a thunderstorm kept us at Lake Arnold.

I agree: do Porter first. Great fun to end with that rock scramble.

Very muddy today, not the best view, easy to follow

Recommend checking out Porter Mountain first then head off to Cascade Mountain since the view is better. Both are worth the effort, beautiful!!

Hard work, but the view is spectacular. Bring lots of water!!!!!

The last mile is a lot of work but lots of opportunities to take breaks to catch your breath and well worth the effort. Very unique view of the high peaks from the summit

Did this on August 1st. Definitely not an easy hike. We went up Macomb first and down Dix. If you're doing Macomb, be sure to take a right immediately after the bridge that has ribbons on it. You'll see it through the camp site and if you go past the lean to you've gone too far. The slide is definitley scary. The views were nice there and at South Dix past the summit tree. We hit some bad weather and couldn't see anything for the next 3 peaks. Getting up Dix was very difficult since the rock we had to get over was well above our heads. Going down Dix is scary and since it was raining, we practically slid down. Glad we finished it and hope one day we can do it and actually see the summits!

Wow, this was incredible. Every turn, every view, every part of this hike was amazing. The reward at the end of every summit is worth every challenge leading up to it. Truth too, once you are on the range (regardless of approach) you will be set.

Started at the Dix Trailhead at 5:30a
(the rock face scramble leading into Macomb is a challenge (understatement), but you'll be glad you did it this way)
#41 Macomb Mountain summit at 7:10a
#42 South Dix Mountain summit at 8:15a - everything around leading in and out of this summit is amazing.
#43 Grace Peak summit at 8:50a - My favorite
Back to the South Dix junction around 9:40a
#44 Hough Mountain summit at 10:21a
#45 Dix Mountain at 11:46a- My second favorite

A good challenge for someone getting into hiking, I saw people of all ages and fitness levels. the Cascade view is simply phenomenal and the Porter isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Took me 5 hours in total car to car but I took nice long breaks at the top (probably 45 min between the two summits). I wouldn't go as far as to say this trail is easy, but compared to the other high peaks this is a walk in the park. It's all about perspective! So if you're a novice hiker, this will be a little challenge. But the view is so worth it. Pack a little picnic for the top!
