A really fun and fairly easy winter hike. A great trail to snowshoe. Trail is easy to follow and the view at the top is amazing for the amount of effort put in.

Great day out. 5° at trailhead but layers proved essential. Little to no wind. Trailhead parking only had one available spot when we arrived a little after 9am. Wore microspikes for first 1/2 to 2/3 of route. Changed to snowshoes shortly after getting off the Brothers ridge. Some tricky and steep spots getting up to the Brothers. Traction of some sort is definitely needed in my opinion. Final route up to summit is STEEP. Make sure your snowshoes are made for steep hiking - mine weren’t and I kept sliding with every step. We had the summit to ourselves for a short time. Some spots required downclimbing facing in on the way down. Switched back to microspikes before descending the Brothers. Took 6:51hrs round trip at a medium pace with plenty of stops for photos, rests, snacks, etc. Trail is packed is most places. Little to no ice on trail.

Sunny ski, beautiful view. Do not consider it as a challenge. it's just fun. easier with microspikes

Completed this hike over the weekend. It was about 28 degrees out—perfect for a winter hike. The views were amazing. Very easy to navigate and microspikes were essential!

Did this with a friend 0107 and chased daylight. Easy hike up until the last mile or so. Crampons are lifesavers. Lots of ice, but with the recent snowfall, it was a good cover which helped with traction. Trekking poles were a big help too. Easy to locate trailhead. Took us about 4-5 hrs round trip with lots of gear on our back and with taking stops to reorganize and take some pictures.
This was our first winter hike ever. Highly recommend.

Went up the Brothers to Big Slide yesterday 1/4. Nice day. Great views. Most everyone had spikes of a sort which I thought were essential. Steep climbing up the Brothers and a couple tricky spots. Steeper yet last 3/10ths up to Slide summit. Good packed snow and not a great amount of ice. A number of areas past the Brothers where care is needed to not break through some thin ice into running water.

Nice moderate grade with switchbacks to ridge line. Fantastic views but a bit tough finding the path to summit on the ridge. Cairns are small and many covered with snow.

Perfect day out for a winter ascent. No need for showshoes, although we brought them the whole way up and down with us just in case. Definitely need microspikes the whole hike (we did see two guys without but I’m not sure how well they managed descending without). Packed snow the whole trail - easy to follow. Took my husband and I 4 hrs, 15 min at a fairly leisurely pace (for us) and spending a good 15 minutes at each summit.

Just completed this hike yesterday. Trail is very straight forward and took about 5 hours to complete with moderate amount of breaks. I didn’t have micro spikes nor snow shoes so the amount of ice on the trail made it very challenging. Crampons would be too much but I’d say micro spikes would have helped significantly. Views at the top of both mountains were amazing. Recommend to anyone looking for a moderately challenging day hike in the Adirondacks.

Beatiful hike on 02JAN2019 icy. Not much snow

Easy hike that pays off great views of the surrounding High Peaks. We took the short trail out & back 12/30/18. Microspikes were necessary in some spots. We saw one group carrying up their snowshoes because there was definitely not enough snow to need them. About halfway in it gets fairly steep. Nothing technical, just enough to get your heart pumping. Took us 45 min to get up, spent 15 min on top, and maybe 25 min to get down.

Did both summits today. New Years Day. Microspikes are needed. Make sure they are sharp. Lots of ice. Glad I had this app as the summit of Porter is nondescript. Cascade was ridiculously windy, icy and somewhat dangerous on top. No views today. Took me 4 1/2 hours for the 6 miles. Probably only a 20 minute break.

Loved it. Hard walk up. Spikes are a must! We were essentially walking up a frozen stream the whole time. Everyone we met was so friendly.

Went up Mt Jo Loop NYE. - trailhead is back by the entrance FYI. Park and walk. Pretty moderate in the snow/ice to about half way then an ice twisted push to the summit. But a short hike up - so nothing serious. Just a careful scramble up with mandatory YakTrak or similar. Nice summit.

The trail is pretty moderate up to the split between Haystack and McKenzie mountains. The ascent up Haystack is steep, but it was mostly the ice that slowed me down. So much ice. Pretty sweet trail overall. Nice views from the top and lots of parking at the trailhead. Great hike!

Did this out & back 12/31/18. Overall a great hike with some awesome views and not too strenuous. Started at 8AM with microspikes from the Garden lot. It begins fairly easy until you begin to ascend the first brother. Nice views up that. There’s not too much up and down between the Brothers which was a nice break. Summited at 12:30 with many rest breaks and later changes. Back to the car by 3PM. Micro spikes were a necessity. Brought snowshoes but didn’t use them as there was no need. That’s # 13!

Great short but steep trail to a summit with amazing veiws. Trail was very icy but some areas had a nice snowpack. Would say micro spikes were essential here.

Great hike.....definitely needed micro spikes.... for someone like me coming to terms with my fear of heights (actually it’s a fear of falling) the top of Cascade offered beautiful views but challenged my phobia ... very exposed .. very open... I imagined sliding off the top but then got over myself.... that’s the point of all of this isn’t it? And it always helps hiking with your very best, very experienced friend.

Hiked with my bestie Susan on her first HPs.

Unbelievable views from the top.

Great trail for the little ones; just challenging enough. Micro spikes are a good idea through December and again in March-April.

Great hike and with clear skies the view is fantastic.

Spiks were required ( some people without them had to turn around). Couldn’t really use snowshoes even if i wanted. I suggest to do Porter first ( uneventful). Top of Cascade was covered with clouded and couldn’t stand ( at the top) due to strong winds ( lost my orange heat ;( )

We did this hike on 12/16 and it was fairly warm out 35-40F. Not too windy. Only needed spikes. Even saw someone trail running with just sneakers! We brought snowshoes, but definitely was overkill. However, we only made it to the first summit. Not sure how second summit would be. Dog friendly and very quiet when we went on a Sunday afternoon. Maybe 2 other groups or so. Beautiful hike and views on the way up and at the summit! Was fun to see Whiteface most the way up! Will be making Jay Mountain a regular!

used snowshoes but microspikes wouldve been better had amazing views and wasn't to difficult took about 1hour and 45 minutes up for a pretty experienced hiker

Easy hike, good views

Nice short and easy climb that offers some great views. Short trail is definitely steeper and more difficult than the long option, but offers some great views on the way up. Short trail was mildly challenging with snow and ice cover; I would definitely recommend descending on the long trail of snow and ice cover.

One of my favorite hikes in the adirondacks. Surrounded by high peaks, this is a beautiful and quick hike. Take the long trail for a more gradual incline, although personally I don’t find it much less steep than the short trail. On 12/10 the trail is completely covered in snow and ice, I wore spikes and had a pretty easy time. I’ve done this trail in all seasons and will always recommend to people who want to see the beauty of the higher peaks without having to climb them.

Great half day hike. This recorded trip doesn’t completely match the way the trail blazes lead. Lots of snow and ice on the trail. Did this on 12/8

Did this hike on 12/7. Trail was snowy from the start, snowshoes/spikes are a must. Perfectly challenging. Amazing views, only made it to the first summit as I started late. The snow past the first summit isn’t as trafficked or packed down as the beginning of the trail, so be prepared! Will definitely hike again during the summer
