Tough first climb of the the year. Celebrating my wife’s 69th birthday hiking Ampersand. No speed records but we thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and of course the view.

Solid view

I found the hike more of a climb with little vista reward. Most of the climb was a scramble through rocks and tree roots. Most of the rock scramble was climbing over rocks that at times were at a 60 degree angle. My 13 year old daughter, who is in good shape, was scared for her safety as we climbed up and later down these rocks.

Nice short hike. A little buggy but with bug spray it was no problem. Steeper at times than you would think for a “Easy”. But worth it- pretty views of the mountains, Saranac Lake and the town.

Great hike for my family! Somewhat challenging for my 9 and 6 year old but nothing unattainable! The view at the top, including from the fire tower and the nearby bench were wonderful even on a hazy day! The trails were well marked and a nice blend of natural rocks, small slopes, tree roots, etc. Watch your step and you will be good!

Fantastic trail. Hiked with 8 & 9 year old, they did great. Beautiful view.

Did this last year with my 4 year old son - definitely more moderate because of rock scrambling, although short - we needed more bug spray as the way down follows a stream!

Some beautiful woods and a well maintained trail but other nearby hikes have better views. The trail goes downhill for the better part of the second mile - not fun on the way back! 3rd of the Saranac 6 for me.

I htink this might have been the toughest of the Saranac 6. We took the Jack Rabbit trail because it as slightly shorter. It starts off going slightly uphill over a lot of ankle-rolling potential rocks. Nothing too tough and at the split we took a right. Once you hit the first climb you will be going up pretty quick! The map in AllTrails is not the actual trail (FYI). There are a few false peaks and then you get to the top with no view. We did go back and took a right at the fork to do Haystack. That was like a little hill travelling that way, much less steep than starting off 86.

This was a beautiful hike - I would strongly recommend this trail. Disclaimer - there is no view at the peak, but there are some decent ones near the top. The trail itself as it starts off through the woods and goes near a creek is very relaxing.

Last of the Saranac 6 complete! Saved it for last because we figured it would be easiest. After doing 3 others over the past day the hike was a little more than I expected. The trail on the right as you go up is pretty steep. Some nice views at the top - ran down the other trail on the way back down to see it was much more gradual.

This is a great hike with a great view and fire tower at the top. Not too difficult for a Saranac 6 peak. Great trail and rewarding.

I completed Haystack previously from the Jack Rabbit trail which was a gradual incline and while it was over a lot of ankle rolling potential rocks it was pretty easy. The second time I followed this trail and was surprised to find it was a lot more challenging. Nothing too crazy but more than I was expecting. The wild blueberries at the top and the decent view made the effort worth it. We met some people at the top who thought they were on Mt Haystack - might have been a little off track. :) This is Saranac 6 Haystack not to be confused with 46er Mt Haystack (or even little Haystack - apparently people like the name Haystack!)

a beautiful day for a hike...we are hiking with our grandson so he can finish the Tupper Lake Triad....the view is amazing....we will have to go again in the fall to see all the color

Nice hike but a bit crowded on a Saturday! Views were nice in 2 directions.

Got to the parking at 7:30 AM on a perfect Friday morning. I recommend the early start. By 9:30 I had the spectacular summit to myself! Loved this mountain. Definitely challenging for that last half mile. More climbing than hiking particularly at the end. 2nd of the Saranac 6 for me.

Definitely a toddler friendly hike with a stunning 360 degrees view!

9:30am start with a clear shot to the top on an overcast (by beautiful) day. Just pretend you’re going to spend an hour on the Stairmaster, and you’ll be fine

Great views, pretty easy hike

Moderate is a better description of this hike. Fine views but pretty grown in. Already starting to get crowded by 9. 1 of 6!

This hike is definitely not easy. It is moderate for sure.

The view at the top is beyond beautiful but the hike up is tough! My boyfriend and I are not avid hikers but we are athletes so we thought we would be able to do it pretty easily. Well, it took us 90 minutes to get up.. maybe more and we took a lot of water and resting breaks. The first 1.9 miles are fine but the last .5 up are hard. A lot of rocks. You need to wear hiking shoes because Nikes were not supportive and we were slipping everywhere. We got there at 7:30 and we were one of the first ones up which was special. Definitely an amazing workout and like I said, the views and the big rock up top were phenomenal!

Perfect day for a hike. Very few bugs. Mostly dry, very well maintained trail. A bit of a steep scramble at the end, but doable. Enjoyed it!

I actually veered off towards McKenzie and came back on the backside of the trail which connects to the Jack Rabbit trail. The entrance was actually a bit tough to find and looks like that side isn’t travelled as much... a bit wilder and actually kind of nice. Glad that I went that way too because the climb isn’t nearly as straight up as the way this trail is showing which I took down. Well worth the trip as the view is great.

Very nice short hike. The Steward was very nice and informative. Not my favorite fire tower view, but still quite nice.

BUG SPRAY IS A MUST. OVER 30 BITES BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE

Great hike! The last part is definitely a bit challenging, but fine if you take your time. We had the mountain to ourselves at 7:30 AM on a Friday — just passed a few groups on our way down. My 12 year-old son wanted me to warn you all about the cobwebs this early though!

Absolutely amazing hike and work out! I’m in fairly decent shape already but this made my thighs burn a little and I had a nice sweat by the time I reached the top. It took me an hour with 3 stops for water. On the way back down I didn’t stop and made it in 27 min. It’s all up the mountain and lots of rocks and roots. Not too many places are flat until you get closer to the top. The view is incredible. Make sure you go to the top of the fire tower and take pictures. You won’t want to miss that! I will be back again!

We took the right fork and the trail was steep. The view at the top was nice for short hike. There were cool wild life like frogs, quails and unfortunately mosquitoes.

The trail starts very easy: a walk in a forest for about 3 km. The last 3 km are pretty steep, lots if climbing on cliffs. Advise for people with dogs: i saw some dogs blocked on the way down because they were afraid to jump off cliffs.
Beautiful view on top.
