Great hike , awesome view , really recommend it to anyone who loves pretty scenic and waterfalls.

Don’t do it with a fullruck

I completed this hike in July. I recommend starting early, at sunrise or even 30 minutes before to beat all the traffic. Lots of people make this hike during the summer and trail can become very crowded. The hike is a nice balance of flat terrain, forest, open hiking above the tree line, climbing, and even some rock scrambling. It’s hard on the feet and ankles as there are lots of rocks to maneuver on the trail. This is most difficult ~5500 elevation hike I’ve done, but the payoff at the peak was worth it. You get 360 panoramic views of the high peaks region..

It was a tough climb, but we had awesome views most of the way up, we also added RPR. Check out my full write up with pictures and things to look out for.

Great hike! Three pretty easy miles to start off, then a mile up! It had great views on top! 3 down 43 to go!

a family bucket list hike. we started from the loj at 6am and we’re back around 4:30pm. it was a LONG HARD day but so worth it! the views from the top are amazing!

we took three long breaks - at indian falls on the way up and back, and again at the summit. so we probably could have finished faster but the breaks really helped keep everyone from bonking.

the entire family is still sore today (wednesday) and we did the hike sunday!

Beautiful hike. Not the most interesting or challenging trails, but the payoff at Indian Head is one of the prettiest views in New York in my opinion. A great hike

Absolutely stunning views at the top, even with fog. Hiked it with another girl (we're both mid 20's) took us 8.5 hours total, with about a 45 minute stop at the top and minimal breaks. Definitely tough for the last mile and a half, but so worth it! also my Fitbit said it was closer to 18 miles.

lots of fun worth the work for the views

Decided to stay an extra day after doing 4 of the Saranac 6 to get a High Peak in. We got a later start than we would have like and had to park about a mile down the road from the LOJ. It was overall a great hike the water was refreshing and the top had some good views. The top can be a little confusing because there are a lot of trails right at the peak but nothing to crazy.

Just completed this hike last weekend over 3 days and 2 nights while camping at Bushnell Falls. The extra time definitely made the summit day much easier. Hike was relatively easy first five miles and then was very steep for most of the rest of the way. Definitely worth the challenge and the sore legs the next day. Views were amazing and you can see for miles in all directions. Would recommend to anyone looking for a difficult but rewarding hike in the Adirondacks.

my 1st high peak, and what a hike it was! I wasn't quite ready for the last mile and a half of rock scrambling but I made it and it was well worth it! Breath taking veiws. Took me longer than most, 12 hours. I took many breaks, I think most people can probably conquer this trail as long as you're in good health and have good endurance! good luck!

Awesome view. Clear day. Tough climb down.

3.5 hrs To climb
3 hrs to comeback.
I had a very good pace.
So expect 8.5 to hike the top.

GREAT hike! We started at 6:30 am and we’re done just before 4. Bring more water than you think you’ll need. We had two 72 oz water backs plus three bottles and drank it all before we were finished. Stop by the creeks on the way down and soak tired feet. It’s a great way to rejuvenate! There’s a $10 parking fee at the LOJ too.

The hike up to Marcy Dam and then to the Phelps Trail cut-off is easy. The sign to Phelps at the cut-off reads 1.0 miles, but it is actually 1.2 miles. The 1.2 miles are a bit challenging, but nothing too difficult. At the top, there is a small trail to the right of a boulder that runs along the left side of the trail - take the trail (very short) for some very nice views.

Great introduction to the high peaks!

Amazing view!!!

August 8, 2018: Completed Big Slide in 5.5 hours, with about 30 minutes of breaks. Parking: The trailhead at Garden Parking (off Adirondack Rd from the village of Keene) is very small. I arrived there at 9am on Tuesday and no spots available. I usually start my hikes earlier, but this time, I was driving from Ottawa the morning of. I quickly learned that if the parking is full, you are SOL. There are no other places to park, except in the village itself at a public parking, which is what I did. In addition to the 5.5 hrs, this added a good 1hour and 15 minutes. So arrive early :) Although I heard that on weekends there's a shuttle service - don't take my word for it though. The hike itself is a nice one, but tough. There is quite a bit of rock scrambling, which I personnaly like. The summit is great, but watch out for mice - one nearly got in my backpack. I didn't do the actual loop, I went right up from the three Brothers trail and came down the same. Cheers

A lot more rock scrambling than I anticipated! I loved the views on the way up, stopping every now and then to get a snapshot, catch my breath, or drink some water. The way back feels long but is a nice break for your knees. Pay attention to the yellow arrow on a boulder after the waterfall on your way back. There's a herd trail going into the woods that we followed that's not the trail! Overall a satisfying hike! I'm an intermediate hiker and I finished in 7 hours, including about 30 min worth of breaks.

Extremely well marked, gradual incline till the very end, and a very nice 360 degree view at the top. Quite muddy in some spots! Bring lots of water and snacks for this one, becuase it's a long day. Start early! I'm an intermediate hiker and finished this in 10 hours, going from 6 to 4, including breaks. There are some nice rest spots along the way like at Marcy Dam or Indian Falls. If you are a regular hiker and have good stamina, this is a great hike for you!

It was a very long hike that let to the valley top on the opposite side of the falls. I was hoping more to be up close to the falls.

The view at the top of the wave was amazing. Hang Ten!! As we got to the top the gravity thinned out and a friend of mine was swept into space. I’m mad because he had the pop tarts. Very fun trip and worth anyone’s while who enjoys sea bass.

Very short but pretty. Was thinking it was .6 miles each way, oops just .3 each way for a total walk of .6. Waterfall is pretty.

Easy trail, also went to Beaver Meadow falls. Rainbow falls is absolutely lovely and the view from Indian Head is amazing. Weather was perfect as well. Would do this again

A long hike for sure, but as advertised the first 5 or so miles were relatively easy and then the difficulty increased tremendously. But the views were worth all the aches and pains. Took us 12 hours from start to finish with a 45 minute stop on top and a short rest and JBL. Took the Shorey Cut trail up and the Phelps trail on the way down. Phelps was easier. Think next time i'll spend the night.

Hiked in to Phelps from the Loj. I really don’t see any reason to do this mountain unless you are a trying to get all 46 High Peaks. Took 2.5 hours from the Loj and less than 2 to get back. The hike in is a lovely walk, but the trail up Phelps is a bit boring and pretty difficult, lots of roots and stones ......no views till the very end. I agree with another reviewer.... it IS a unique view of Marcy and the other high peaks in the area once you are on the summit. Of course I had a great time, I was hiking! But I would not climb this mountain again.

I didn’t think this trail was hard, but by husband did as he has bad knees. Summited in 3 hrs and about 2.5 hrs to descend. The views were nice although it was a cloudy day, I’m sure on a clear day it would be incredible. I would recommend poles if prone to knee strain.

Great hike!

Challenging but doable. I love the varied terrain and the view is fantastic.
