Steep assent with lots of stone steps and a few iron ladders. Nice views along most of the trail.

As AllTrails lists this route as an 'out-and-back' and we summited Chaplains, we thought we could be able to descend via Precipice. After attempting to descend for about 0.2mi, it seemed unwise to continue because of the grade and ice forming over the steep face...let alone going down the iron rungs. While signs warn that this isn't recommend to descend from Chaplains via Precipice, the app's distinction of an 'out-and-back' gives a contrary and potentially dangerous impression.

Exhilarating trail. Tough in some sections but not impossible. First rung&ladder challenge is the toughest... if you can do this one, you can do the rest. In the colder months, leave plenty of time because there’s ice in many areas. For a short hike with a relatively small increase in elevation, this trail packs a punch. Definitely can’t do this just once!

The trail is incredible but I would not advise for the winter. We did this trail on a cold day and the day before it rained. In many places had ice which made the path slippery. Even with the metal ladders I do not consider it a difficult trail but it requires care and a little effort.

I went up the north ridge and down the south (no roads go near the south trail down, and you can catch a shuttle). Actually went up and down barefoot, and still did it all in under four hours. If you’re in half decent shape it’s a breeze.

On the way up cars pass very close by several times but that didn’t stop a deer from running across the trail! It’s really crowded on top, and as you get nearer there are lots of people who walked on from the road. It’s a bit lame, but not enough to take away from the hike and views.

I highly recommend going down the south side rather than doubling back. The scenery changes, I passed less than 5 people (and about 20+on north ridge), and it goes straight into one of the campgrounds.

This trail is amazing. Be careful during rain tho.

Beautiful hike! was a little rough in places, but had a lot of beautiful stops to rest my legs in the way up. followed the blue markings and a beautiful stream. had to be careful because of the leaves and rocks were a tad slippery. amazing view at the end, very much worth the hike. ended up watching the sunset later on. amazing views!

This is the best trail I have ever done! The most beautiful trail for the entire time of the hike and even more gorgeous at the top!

I would do this trail again in a heartbeat!

Precipice made Beehive seem like child's play. The beginning of the trail starts off with some pretty cool boulder hopping. You have nice views within 10 minutes. The rest of the trail is a series of switchbacks, ladders, steps, and bridges. You're on cliff faces the majority of the way up. I felt safe, but wet rocks/rain could make for a pretty dangerous ascent. We hiked up and over, down the Orange/Black trail to the road, and followed the road back to the Precipice lot. We did this after sunrise on Cadillac and saw only 2 couples. Awesome hike during peak foliage!

Did this trail in the evening when it was extremely foggy, I'm sure there would have been great views if it wasn't for the fog. A great trail otherwise, wild blueberry bushes are everywhere. You are following blue arrows painted on the rock

Fun hike, a must do if in the park

Great hike with amazing views and lots of elevation changes

Great views at the end, but be prepared for some butt-burning stair climbing in order to get there! Possibly a better view than Cadillac Mtn! :)

This was a beautiful trail with so many awesome views at each level. Perfect for fall leaf peeping and photography. Not a difficult hike. The only disappointment was the road was next to the trail at points which took away from the nature. This is a”must do’ hike.

A wonderful hike. Mainly over rocks. We did it together with my family incl. a 20 months old in a carrier. Stopped many times. Made it up in 2 hours and down in about 1.5 hours. The gift shop up top sold hot chocolates, which we loved as it was cold and windy on this October day.

S’ok. Fairly easy all the way up if you have any climbing background. Just a simple scramble at best.

Started our hike at 5.15am and got to the top by 6.30am to watch the sunrise. It doesn’t get light out till after 6am so make sure to bring a headlamp. The hike was exciting! All uphill and made it more adventurous in the dark. Not challenging but definitely long and can be tiring at some points. The view is absolutely amazing and sunrise is not to be missed.

From the summit going to Dorr mountain summit is rewarding. (then going down from Dorr mountain north ridge trail, Hemlock trail, and Gorge path)

The whole hike is one amazing view, just at different altitudes! So much fun.

Excellent trail! Lots of fun with many rails to help you along and keep you from falling or slipping.
I would suggest only climbing this one in good weather/visibility and only if you are physically capable of it. There isn’t any good way to back track during the tricky turns and ledges.
I am so glad I made it onto this trail while in Acadia. It’s one of the coolest experiences I’ve had hiking!

Favourite trail of all time! I was a little worried at first given all the warnings about the steep drops. We ended up doing the hike while it was drizzling so definitely added to the adventure. Overall it’s a solid challenging hike but if you focus and are careful there’s no reason why you can’t finish. Takes about 2 hours round trip (going down the Orange/Black trail). The first 20 minutes are a rock scramble with some introduction to the iron rungs, the next 30 minutes you’ll be moving vertically and laterally holding onto iron rungs, the last 10 minutes to the top are a mix of rock scramble and rungs. Took us about an hour to get down since it was wet and we were being careful. If you have a phobia of heights, this hike is not for you. But if you’re just uncomfortable like I am then this is a great way to get comfortable and feel accomplished. The views are unbelievable.

The most challenging and rewarding scrambling trail I’ve done. It pushes you to your limit in the best way with fantastic views the whole way. Do it!

Best hike in the park. Best views.

Great hike with beautiful views! Wouldn’t recommend going up / down in rainy conditions without proper shoes.

We didn't do the whole trail, but the views were lovely.

decent hike not one of my favorites though

difficult but great hike

Awesome hike

So beautiful! Finished the sunrise hike this morning! We left the trailhead at 3am. It took us 1 hr 15 minutes to ascend. We are relatively in shape but not technical hikers. Follow the little blue marks and the cairns! Only twice did we almost veer off course in the dark. Have a good flashlight. We each had either a headlamp or flood-flashlight. It doesn’t start getting light until almost 5:30am. Happy hiking!

This hike was super fun yet slightly terrifying at points as I do not do exceedingly well with heights but the overwhelming sense of accomplishment and beautiful views make it all worth it
