Hiked this in August 2020! Decided to camp a little ways in before making the treck all the way up South Sisters. Left at 5am. Was one of the most challenging things I’ve done but would do it again! The view is BEAUTIFUL!
it was great! definitely need some snow shoes and yurt is pretty covered in snow. ice was also falling off the fire Lookout so be careful.
Didn't get a sunrise view but it was a nice, challenging hike. Winds were around 30mph.
This was a great winter hike. Most of the trail was snow-covered but never very deep. The elevation gain is relatively stable throughout the hike and there are no particularly steep sections. We caught some great views along the way, but clouds obscured the views at the top. We used microspikes for the last couple miles and post-holed a small amount on the summit, but it was easily managed. The last few miles were windy enough to be interesting, but never dangerous. I think it added to the hike actually. Overall, this turned out to be a great winter hike with the added bonus of being a great workout.
Packed snow the whole way- tough running conditions, very slippery. Strong winds and snow at the top, but super nice long incline, so a good workout!
Awesome hike! Once I got out of the trees the view of the sisters etc went away from the cloud and it got quite windy with a couple feet of powder. Otherwise there was roughly 1ft. I did turn around quite close to the top because my dog was having trouble with the deep snow and wind.
Steady climbing, nothing very steep. Views toward the Three Sisters.
Trail running update 12/30/20–snow covered the whole way, but packed down and runnable until the last 3/4 mile is pretty icy and slow going and the very last trail section at the summit was under a few feet. Definitely much colder the last mile up out of the tree cover, it was snowy/windy and I was happy to have extra layers
I did the trail on 11/7, and the weather was pretty miserable! The wind was about 30mph near the top, and the visibility was terrible. I think this is most likely the last day that you can summit Mt. Bachelor without snowshoes or microspikes.
Hiked 11/02, no snow yet! Very steep and brutal hike so be prepared for that! Pretty cold and windy at the top so bring layers
Perfect weather for a Halloween morning hike! Gorgeous sunrise on the way to the trailhead and crisp but not cold on the hike up. There has been a little moisture on the mountain which really helps hold the scree together, making the last couple miles significantly less frustrating. For this mountain, the 30 or so people are about the fewest I've seen on a weekend. A good snow will close the road pretty quickly so get up here while you can!
Steep and slippery. If you fall on your butt on the way down, it doesn't hurt much - more of a slide than anything. Poles helped on the way up but I skipped them on the hike down. The lake in the caldera is frozen but it was possible to refill water at the lake about 1k below the summit. I prefered refilling to hauling an extra liter up.
Gorgeous views. Straight up religious stuff. If the view is heaven, the last mile or two to the summit by the glacier is straight up hell. Trek poles would have been amazing. The weather on Sunday was absolutely perfect, very little wind and full visibility all around.
Hiked Nov 1st 2020. The trail is in a good shape, very easy to navigate. There were many cars in the parking at 7:40 AM. This is a challenging hike, not a joke. There is no water on the trail, except a creek at the start. The trail is steep (only gets flat for about a mile and half?) and lot of lose rocks. I took a long time taking breaks and photo shooting. I didn't have poles so I cant say if you need them. However gaiters would save you from a thousand rocks in your boots, hiking down. I would not go up if the weather is not clear, just because the views are stunning. Its totally worth it to hike up to the 'actual summit point' on the crater. I loved the crater more than the 360 degree views to be honest, you get those views from so many other hikes. The crater reminded me a little bit of Mt Rainier.
