Beautiful lake after passing waterfalls.several hikers saw bears. Was pretty crowded

Nice trail but we were not able to get to far as we had a Black bear blocking our path about 3/4 of a mile into the hike. Hopefully we will be able to do it again soon.

Pretty hike with a variety of terrain. You’ll get a workout at the end but very doable. We started at 7:30am and the trailhead was full but we were able to park at the first pullout. The big falls were gorgeous and we saw tons of cutthroats at Fern Lake plus a mama and baby grouses (ptarmigans?) on the way back. Go early and deep to avoid the crowds (the Pool was jam packed at noon).

It’s a great trail. You start in the valley and work your way up to a lake in the mountains. There are so many wildflowers and streams in the valley, a truly beautiful trail. A must do if you are in Rocky Mountain National Park.

It's alright, but there is much nicer around. Easy trail to follow. I would suggest however to start from there, leave your car at the Fern lake trailhead, and hike all the way to bear lake (instead of back and forth). Same distance, more landscape. And then take the bus back to your car.

Nice hike with a moderate climb up to Fern Falls. The last mile to Fern Lake is the most strenuous but not bad. Wear sunscreen and bug spray. The views from Fern Lake are gorgeous.

Beautiful from start to finish. A taste of everything. Waterfall, wildflowers, Mountain View’s, and rushing water along the way!

Not a hike for Mountain View’s, glacier work, or geological interest. Kind of boring for me. BUT, lots of flora and fauna. Very tough, long ascent for an older person.

Nice, relatively flat, shaded trail along the Big Thompson. Great rock formations.

The entire hike has gorgeous views, loved the falls... beautiful! Hiked with a 9 year old with no problems. Definitely quieter than most but still relatively trafficked.

Amazing hike! It is truly beautiful the entire way. Don’t let the beginning fool you. When you reach the bridge to startup to the lake it will make your heart pump!! Just a beautiful hike enjoy we did

Hiked 6/8-gorgeous wildflowers right now. Trail is well-marked and easy to follow. Pretty flat until you get to the pool, then it’s mostly uphill from there. Definitely gets your heart pumping! But I’d still call this trail moderate because it’s not technically difficult. On the way up you pass a beautiful waterfall. The lake itself is stunning. I like this trail because it seems to get less traffic.

One of my all time favorite Colorado hikes as long as you include the extra mile up to Odessa lake. You will not regret this. Went 6/7 and trail is perfect and ready for summer. Phenomenal views at Odessa.

Good spot for fly fishing. Peaceful and quiet.

Very slippery when snow but made it to the top. Beautiful views of the valley.

Camped and fished at Fern Lake. Explored up to Odessa and Spruce as well. Great trail and camp sites so close to town. Easy, fun fly fishing.

Great moderate hike but took wrong turn at the pool so went to Cub Lake and around to that parking lot and walked back 1 mile to Fern Lake lot.Total loop was 6.2 miles.

such a great hike! you see a waterfall halfway up the trail (it cooled us down) and the lake itself is gorgeous. best part was that it wasn't crowded! we sat by the lake with so much privacy.

Hiked 5/26. Met some folks that tried to hike beyond Fern Lake, to Odessa but had to turn around because of snow.

Great hike, one of my all time favorites in the park. The beautiful waterfall is a great mindway point of the hike. Not too crowded, even on Memorial Day Weekend.

I hiked up to the lake on 5/26. There's some snow right at the lake but it's clear the rest of the way up. The lake is completely ice free and the fishing was good. It's one of my favorite hikes in the park.

Very stunning lake, absolutely recommend this hike, snow is only at the actual lake, and pretty much completely avoidable, friend and I did this is trail runners and had dry feet throughout.

We took fern lake trail on the way out and cub lake on the way back, it was an excellent way to keep it fresh so it wouldent be a simple out and back. Doing it that way turned it to be around 11 miles round trip.

Best place ive ever eaten a lunch, would absolutely do this again.

Saw some moose unexpectedly 5/18/18! Quick little walk on the way down from Rainbow curve.

Beautiful hike! We didn’t know anything about the trail beforehand, so the 2 mile elevation gain from the pools up to the lake was a bit of a surprise, didn’t detract from the hike whatsoever though. There was still some snow between the last 1/4 mile and the lake, and the lake itself was partially iced over still. It was an afternoon well spent!

nice hike. lake still frozen mostly. not able to fly fish though. snowpacked in places. good hike

The trail up until about half mile to the falls was clear, the falls themselves are still covered with snow. I didn’t wear my spikes on the way up to the lake and didn’t have any problems. I love Fern Lake it’s beautiful. Just be careful, it looks frozen but don’t take your chances on it.. I wanted to go to Odessa Lake but started post holing around the boulder field.

Hiked this on a Monday in late January, just boots. Packed snow almost all the way to the lake, then loose snow at least 3 ft. deep for the last half mile and all around the lake. Ultra windy. Clearly a busy trail on weekends.

Hiked this trail in late September 2017. This wasn't on our agenda, but due to the weather closing down the road to the west side of the park we took this trail.

Turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip because we were able to see three moose (Bull, cow, and calf). The trail follows the river and they were seen near the river feeding. It was some what difficult to no be so close to them due to the proximity of the trail to the river.

We only went to the falls, quite a climb, but worth the trek. Be sure to dress with warm clothes, as you get to a higher elevation the temperature drops.
