This mountain has taken a beating, as evidenced by the large number of downed trees, several still on the path. Comparing to other hikes in the area, I’d judge the effort more as conditioning, than for the quality of the surroundings. There is an interesting boulder ‘graveyard’ not far from the fork, and the trail forces you to enjoy the entire summit. Some bugs, and very few other hikers. Recent rains kept the trails wet. There is one very exposed section of trail near the top- a 4’ wide path 10-15 steps long, that will challenge those with sensitivity to heights.

It was a great evening for a hike with a gorgeous sunset!

Awesome hike, did it with 9 people and a dog!

I hiked this Saturday 8/11/18 it was a beautiful day the trail was great. Mount Starr King had a beautiful view.

Awesome hike, made the trek with my 9 year son, 7 year old daughter, teen niece, and 64 year old mother and it was an all around crowd pleaser. We all found it challenging, yet very rewarding as the views were spectacular. Looking forward to do the hike thru to the North Moat Mountain.

My daughter and I completed the Welch-Dickey Loop trail this past weekend, and I have to say that the views are well worth the effort it takes to complete the loop. We followed the trail in a counter-clockwise loop, as others have suggested. The first peak is Welch Mt., which gives great 360 views from the peak, but also great views at many intervals after you clear the trees at about 1.2 miles in. The second peak, Dickey Mt., offers great views looking North, but also great views looking back at Welch Mt. The descent from Welch Mt. to the valley between the the two mountains is a little steep at points, but nothing outrageous. Although rated moderate, I was a little more winded than I have been on other trails marked moderate, especially on the smooth bare-faced rock that seemed to keep ascending forever. It took us 3 hrs., with occasional breaks.

My husband and I hiked this trail a few days ago and loved it. We hiked counter clockwise as suggested. The views are plentiful and amazing. I would say this is rated moderate for a White Mountain hike but it is more challenging compared to some other hikes I have done that were rated moderate. It is well worth the effort!

Even in the rain and fog, this was a little gem of a hike. On the easy side of moderate. Will definitely return in sunny weather for the views.

it was rainy so had no view at the top, but the woods were absolutely beautiful to hike through. I would definitely do this one again.

Nice little hike stupidly done in the rain.

did this with my 7 yr and my 69yr old mother. I am not even close to fit and it took us 2 hours to summit (with a 30min break for lunch and pictures) and about another hour to get to the south cliffs and back. GO TO THE SOUTH CLIFFS! It is the best views of the hike. took us under an hour to come down. It is quite steep so poles would have been good.

Incredible views at the top.
It should be mentioned at the beginning of each review.
Not an easy hike.... uphill from the start. Not to steep, doable, and will get your heart pumping.
Couple if their 50s. Took us 4:45 with a 15 minutes break in top.
Great.

this was one fun/tough hike. the scramble is hard and long but 360 views most of the way up. definitely go counterclockwise and this is about a 4.5mi hike.

Gorgeous view and well marked trail. We made it in two hours and fifty minutes with couple short breaks. Saw some trees with yellowish hue in the valley. This gives the hint that revisiting the trail in fall will be better.

Great hike, does get steep about halfway up but you’re under tree cover the entire way up to the peak so it stays pretty cool even on a hot day. Brought my dog and she had no problems navigating the trail. The first half of the trail follows along the Pemigewasset River and the gentle sound of rushing water is always nearby. Wide cliff at the summit provides fantastic views of the town of Lincoln and the White Mountains.

Very FUN!!

Couldn’t say enough about how enjoyable this hike was. The views were so rewarding, especially for only being a moderate hike, and you get them ascending and descending as much of the climb is on bald granite with open spaces. 4.4 miles, took us about 2 hours.

Fun family trip with just the right mix of fun and challenge. Some steep and rocky parts but nothing too tough. I saw people of all ages - from young families with parents carrying babies in packs, to teens and seniors. Nice brook running up the side of the trail at some parts. Nice view st the summit. Can be a bit busy - not the trail you want if you prefer solitude. Well marked. Done with a 10 and 12 yr old, and 4 month old puppy. Nice canopy of trees to shine away the elements.

Nice hike. Some erosion damage on the trail and some jerk flattened the cairn at the top. Cairn fixed and hope the jerk that took it apart gets poison ivy in some horrible places. The views were awe inspiring and could not have been better weather! Our kids handled it without issue.

I very much enjoyed this trail- one of the best of the area. The varied path grades and quality keep the hike interesting and moderately challenging. The payoff was excellent- a breezy summit with excellent views. I would happily do this hike again and again.

This hike was awesome! It was very very difficult given the 60% humidity but, I could see a normal day being rated moderate. Took us about 4 hours with 4 pretty long breaks going up. It starts off very easy like everyone said and then gets progressively steeper. I never felt like I was really scrambling up rocks though and I often feel that way in the whites. The view up top is totally worth it so keep pushing past all the nice overlooks and areas that feel like false peaks. You get a full 360!! Would absolutely do again.

was a nice hike up today. under the canopy of the trees, air temp/humidity not bad for our group of 5 to make it in about an hour. the kids did fine, though one thought it was more steep than she expected. a great day

Went with my mom on a too warm day. Hopped over a river and a down tree. The top is pretty steep with slabs of rock. Can be slippery. Not many people on the trail. Very nice views! Blueberries scattered throughout.

A pleasant hike. Previous reviews are correct, rocky terrain early on, and great views of the lakes near the summit. Recent rains made the early trail section muddy and buggy, but not enough to be a consideration.

This trail was really fun and very steep. I thought I’d summited three times before actually reaching the summit. The views are incredible. The trail is well marked.

I'm in love love love with this trail. Just one of the best in the Whites. Definitely a moderate trail and definitely do not attempt when wet or shortly after. Hiking boots are a major plus. Prepare for bald faces and a few rock scrambles. If you have a fear of heights or open spaces, this might not be for you. If you see blue blazes on the Dickey decent, turn around and find the yellow blazes to your right, from this direction. Blue blazes take you 11 miles out of your way from the parking lot. We saw blue and I had read to stop and go back so I'm reposting for others. Needs new yellow blazes at this spot especially!

My family had a great time on this hike. On our way through the cave section of Percival, we retrieved about twenty water bottles of varying types from one crevice. Apparently people are either accidentally or purposely dropping bottles just outside the cave proper. Please keep a good grip on your bottles.

First off....there was nothing “easy” about this hike. But, with that said, it was a fun beautiful hike with amazing views. Had to cross a brook by jumping from rock to rock (and not falling). Some steep parts that can be slippery when wet. Not many people there. Had the summit to myself. All in all, great hike!
