Great hike. Very difficult at sections (it was snow capped and iced over) in sections near the waterways, from the recent snow melt. Some challenges upward but worth the efforts when you reach the observation platform.

Love this hike loved it more when I could climb to the top, I personally think this is harder than hiking to Mount Le Conte. I recommend doing some hills and longer hikes prior to this one. The view is still stunning from the overlook. This is a must do hike in the park

A beautiful waterfall with a short walk along the river.

Everything you’ve read about how relentlessly steep this trail is? It’s all true. Had we not been training for several months for this hike, wife & I probably wouldn’t have been able to get out of bed the next morning. Trekking poles are A MUST for this steep hike; your thighs and calves will thank you.
Even in the segments that don’t contain long flights of stairs, it’s still nearly always an uphill climb. All that said, the views from the overlook are pretty amazing. The bare “chimney tops” themselves are clearly visible from the overlook, so there’s really no need to follow the trail beyond the overlook (where it dead-ends at a gate).
After lots of rain a few days earlier, the trail was extremely muddy on the day we hiked it.
This trail is definitely showing signs of being “loved to death” by scores of hikers. (Wonder if some sort of daily lottery to manage the number of hikers might be the answer?)
Encountered a young couple on the trail with their dog, and had to politely let them know that dogs aren’t allowed on most hiking trails within the park.
Be sure to start this hike early enough in the day that you’ll arrive back at the parking lot before it starts to get dark. On our mid-afternoon trip back down, we encountered a number of folks just getting started who almost certainly would be coming down all those steep stairs in twilight.
As always, carry – and drink – plenty of water, and take some energy snacks (or lunch) to enjoy at the overlook before heading back to the trailhead and the pain reliever of your choice. Sunscreen and bug spray are wise precautions.
Although parking area is fairly large, it appears to fill up quickly, so plan to get there early to avoid having to park along the busy roadside and walk to the trailhead.
After completing this challenging but rewarding hike, treat yourself to a burger in Gatlinburg – you’ve earned it!

just loved all aspects of this hike...the waterfalls were beautiful and the hike was worth every step!

Well laid out trail, you can stop at the overlook at the top of the falls but the real payoff is going around to the bottom of the falls.

extremely short nicely paved pathway from the parking lot to the top BUT the path goes straight up very challenging will stop a couple times to catch your breath but worth every View at the top

My son and I hiked this trail this morning. It was challenging, but definitely worth the effort and we were glad we chose to do it. We will definitely hike this one again and hopefully the top portion will be opened up again soon.

Nice trail all the signs was in good condition and you could tell where you was at. Got to stand in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia all at the same time. The view was great.

Hard to find but AMAZING!

Not too difficult of a hike! Steep walk up. Steps, bridges, more steps, inclines, but it’s relatively short of a hike now that the walk to the chimney tops is gated off. Took my gf and I about an hour to climb up with a solid 10 minute rest(were young and in great shape). We did see a handful of people struggling but nothing that will be hard. Beautiful view from the new lookout

Nice hike with quite a bit of incline. I struggled to get to the top, definitely had to stop and rest for a couple of minutes about 5 times! Views from the top are stunning!

Excellent for kids. Nice trail for moderately fit people . Trail is easy just a bit of an incline. I did it with a 5 year old and he handled it well.quick movie at top of mountain

Nice little trail. From the map it looks like you hike on the road but you don’t thankfully. It’s on the ridge right above the road.

Incredible views! I have been twice and the scenic hike is a great break from driving on the skyway or a complement to hiking the nearby Joyce Kilmer Forest. Would highly recommend. Very easy going, nice picnic spot and blueberries ripening in the summer months.

We had a little trouble finding the trail head at first, but finally got there. The gravel drive to the tail head threw us a little. The trail head isn't much more than a dirt patch with a mud puddle in the middle so we just parked where we could. No signage but the trail is well maintained and obvious. We hiked up the north side first and there are some sections that are harder than I thought we'd encounter, but overall I'd say moderate is a good description of the trail. The double falls are beautiful and well worth the hike. We came back the south trail which runs along the creek/river and it was so nice. The sound of the water, the fall colors, the smell of the forest, it was awesome. The trail was well marked on that side too. The hike felt longer than described and another person told us it was a little over 4 miles. My husband and I are 58 and 56 and had no problems.

Awesome trail! I highly recommend it!

We did the full loop on an early November day after a few days of torrential rains here in the Dalton area. As a result, all of the streams, springs and creeks were swollen. In the part of the trail that goes through the valley floor, there are many streams that are easy to step across in normal conditions, however, on this day, the width of the streams varied from 3 feet to 15 feet in width that we had to cross. We actually had to ford one stream, but were able to leap across with a running start, or make steppingstones for the other ones. We crossed at least 20 streams as we hiked along the valley floor. While these many water challenges added additional challenges to the trek, it also made the completion that much more satisfactory to us. Great trek! We started at the trailhead at 11 AM, and finished the loop at 2:30 PM. We stopped frequently for pictures and to formulate strategies for crossing the many streams. We did not see a single other hiker, and did not hear any traffic or other noise, which gave this loop a refreshing, backcountry feel. Enjoy!

Great little hike with quite a bit of inclined. I was up top on the tower for the better part of an hour waiting for the fog /clouds to clear. I finally got to see a few peaks of mountain tops coming through the clouds and it was amazing

Nice leisurely hike. Great trail to run on. Fall foliage was beautiful. Trail was less traveled but well marked.

We did this trail after going to alum cave first. I would not suggest that you do both in one day unless you are conditioned. Chimney is strenuous. Trail started to get crowded. Go early! It’s a nice trail but it is a thigh killer. Would def go back especially to finish the trail where it is closed at the top.

Beautiful, easy hike to the falls. Great setting with easy, safe photo opportunities. This trail was active with many groups of hikers of all ages. We started our day with 3 Forks Trail Loop across the trail head and then ended with this hike to the falls. We are glad we made the extra effort to see the falls. Also appreciated that the loop we did first was quieter and less traveled. The two hikes together give the best of both worlds if you are fit enough to hike 7+miles in a day.

Nice hike to do in the fall. We loved the water features along the way!

Beautiful trail which suffered from the 2016 fires. They have made some great progress in restoring the trail and even though the end of the trail is still closed to hikers, it's well worth the 1.75 mile hike to the new overlook

Really nice day hike. Highlights are certainly the Firetower and Boardwalk, which are both accessible without having to do the long loop.

Only thing keeping it from getting 5 stars is the last section being closed since the 2016 fires, I understand why it's still closed but can't say it isn't disappointing. They have put in some great work to get the trail to the point it's at, but ending where it did was a bit of a tease. As is still a nice short hike with a good climb for the last third.

Perfect time of year to hike this trail! Beautiful colors and scenery. Recommend stopping mid-way and taking the steep little trek to the smaller falls before the larger falls . . . both are amazing!

Great hike! It took us about 3 hours up and down, with lots of stops for pictures and a little rest at the top. Inclines are steep and it was pretty slippery, but overall fine. Views at the top are gorgeous and well worth the climb.

This was awesome!! It took my girlfriend and me a little over two hours to complete and there were definitely some steep inclines and declines! Not for the faint of heart, but the views at the end are worth every second!! 10/10!

Beautiful scenery.
