maybe i missed the bike trail but i did not see one . i did see no bicycle signs

Nice walking and running trail

Not very much shade, but an amazing view at the top with the railway ruins! Bring yo’ sunscreen.

Great hike with good LA history at the top. It’s all up hill with very little shade so plan accordingly with water and a hat. Also it’s street parking and it can get busy. Dog friendly

The trail starts out well marked but soon many trails lead off in all directions. They should have more signs to keep you on track. Other than that it’s a beautiful area and a lot of fun. I’m glad I had this app to keep us on the right trail

Short, easy-ish loop through Devil's Punchbowl, when you don't have time to go 7 miles to Devil's Chair. This short loop woild be gre as t for kids.

Dull but easy hike on a wide equestrian path, leading from one parking lot to another. Meh.

Great hike mostly covered. Started at 6am and saw only 1 person on the way. On the way back I passed quite a few people. Go early and enjoy the peace and quiet. Wonderful view at the top.

I did this hike first thing in the morning with my two dogs. I like to go counterclockwise and end my hike at the ranger station. Saw deer at the beginning of the hike.

on Devils Chair Trail

Started this hike first thing in the morning with my two dogs. The first mile is a straight incline so is the first 8/10th of a mile leaving the chair. Great view. Make sure you bring water.

Distance:
5 miles to Echo Mountain (2.5 up and 2.5 down)
10 miles to Inspiration Point (5 miles and 5 miles down)

Hike through some unique LA history as you churn those legs upward to the Echo Mountain resort ruins. The trail has constant elevation and is a really solid workout. Once you get to the ruins (2.5 miles), take a break, explore the remains, and eat your lunch or snacks here. It is quite enjoyable yelling into the echo phone and hearing your voice reverberate through the mountains - it really carries through clearly!

Now if you want to make this hike special, I HIGHLY recommend going from the ruins and trekking all the way up to Inspiration Point via the Sam Merrill trail or the Castle Canyon (both these entrances are marked with plaques that look identical). This is where the trail gets more isolated, rugged, narrow, and is much steeper! The Sam Merrill trail once you get towards the top, brings you through the backside of mountain where you venture into the shaded wilderness of the woods - really loved this change in the landscape. The Castle Canyon trail ascends up much faster and steeper than its counterpart and is a major workout where you will be huffing and puffing until you get to the top. Be aware of potential mountain bikers trekking down these trails, I was pretty shocked to have 3 of them go by us as the trails were narrow, quite impressive honestly. Once at Inspiration point, soak in the views and lay down before heading back to the trailhead. They have these cool, hollow telescope tubes that are labeled by LA's neighborhoods (silverlake, venice, etc). These aren't actual telescopes but if you had one this would be the perfect time to use it. There are also a good amount of hawks or ravens up here so make sure to gaze and be amazed as they soar around you, I even saw one doing some tricks in the air!

A beautiful mountain hike that is not too far from the city!

Parking: There is free parking at the base of the trailhead.

Beautiful area but it was so hard to follow this trail. So many washes and false trails that led me and my partner astray. Ended up adding two miles to make it a 5-mile total hike. Ended up on the PCT at some point? I made it out in one piece so I’m not complaining.

I’m an old guy. It was quite a work out for me.

Very nice hiking! Beautiful view

very nice view.

Loved it! We say a deer family! Very close too!

Great trail. Very clean and wide.
We encountered a baby rattle snake, so be careful. Be aware of your surroundings. It’s all part of the hike/walk.

Nice trail not to hard good work out

So beautiful!!!

I hiked this trail on Tuesday, October 16th. The weather was in the lower 60s which was perfect hiking weather. The trail is beautiful with a nice mixture of open exposed areas with great views of Devil’s Punchbowl, narrow one-track foot paths through the shaded forest and then the finale, the walk out to the ledge of the Devil’s Chair itself. Killer views of the Punchbowl and the desert beyond. Hiking midweek I only saw 3 other hikers the entire hike. Finally, since I hiked in relatively mild weather this hike was not that strenuous (probably the easier end of the Moderate range). I will definitely be back!

More easy than moderate, the pathway is narrow for single file hiking, but the hike itself is fairly easy. No strenuous up or down hill parts, minus the very end that is slightly downhill.

Beautiful views, and if you go early in the morning and hike quietly, you might see a wild bighorn sheep :)

As soon as you hit the trail you’re climbing switchbacks all the way up until you hit Echo Mountain point. Beautiful views as your climbing and at the top of Echo Mountain. We went up to Inspiration Point thru Castle canyon trail, it’s a challenging trail with plenty of shade and great views. We came down the Sam Merrill Trail from inspiration point, at first it was nice, lovely tress and shade but then it was switchbacks all the way down with full sun exposure and no shade. As challenging as castle canyon trail is I Would definitely do this hike again.

great workout if you use the steep part right from the start...

Short and fun. 1 blowdown and not well marked by the creek bed. Pretty simple though.

Nice trails, you’ve to work hard right start from the parking area and work harder once you’ve reach the staring point of the trail. Just discovered that they’ve nicer view on the other side of the mountain overlooking the city. Hikers were friendly, polite and you’ll get greetings from them ease your fatigue. Klara, as usual waiting for me on the peak.

Pretty good morning workout. The way up was the steepest ive veer hiked. You could probably crawl thats how steep it is. Really liked this trail, it was a major challenge getting up, but the fire road on the way way was great, i even jogged it down.

This is ones of the hardest best hiking in the valley, going all the way up to the fire department, and coming down the street. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Did this trail earlier today and it was invigorating to say the least!!! I didn’t know I had a fear of heights until hiking this trail because the path really gets narrow and steep with loose rocks so you really need to watch your step. The views were amazing and the weather was beautiful. I was prepared and had lunch up top at the picnic area where the big house used to be. That view is a must see. Great for those that have some experience and aren’t afraid of heights. Will definitely be back to hike the other trails!
