We hiked from the southern trailhead. Trail is good to a short distance beyond Matilija Camp. However, after the canyon turns sharply right, the trail effectively ends - all paths are blocked by large amounts of fallen tress, brush, etc. So total in and out hike is about 3.5 mi.

Great hike and views. Wasn't very crowded either.

Great hike, bring and carry water though.

Great hike. Lots and lots of snakes guys. Be careful

Nice views. Go early.

Great hike for a Saturday! There is potential to make this hike up to 10+ miles. It was neat to see the old MASH filming site. Nice change of scenery throughout the hike. The earlier you go, the less people. The trail starts getting busy around 8:30. Highly recommended!

I thoroughly enjoyed this hike. Challenging but doable with spectacular views. Looking forward to doing this hike again!

This was a fun hike. I left at 320ish in the morning and made it to the peak right before sunrise for some awesome views. If you go at night make sure you're comfortable with walking through spider webs, because it's pretty much spider webs all the way up. I had to wave a stick a stick in front of me the entire time.

Super great trail a bit confusing at times really fun

Great place to go hike and spend time with friends and family. Highly recommended to those who love to hike and admire nature. Also great cliffs to jump off if you are into that!

Awesome hike! Be sure to go counter clockwise. You get the shade going up hill.

This route has three sections. King James Court ( a street name) to the top of Dead Cow/China flats trail. Top of Dead Cow into China Flats itself. China Flats up to Simi Peak. We left at 7:30am and out by 10:15 am on an 89 degree high day. Always good to start early out here and bring plenty of water when it's warm and more when it's hot. Ok for dogs if they are experienced hikers with proven (reiterate, proven) time over distance and elevation. If not, leave them home. You can always shorten this hike and just go to the top of Dead Cow (which is what this trail is locally referred to from King James Court to the first top out before you go into China Flats and return. Great views. Not sure where these guys are telling you to leave from Cheseboro Parking lot. You'll be miles off course. Leave from the cul-de-sac at King James Court or alternately from the map they provided.

Great Trail. A bit confusing at times. Looking for green or blue arrows to remind you your goin correct way. Apparently there are multiple ways to get to first punch bowl. Tiring but so worth the hike when you take that jump in pool. Planning to go back but explore the other bowls.

Trail can be a bit confusing at times but as long as you follow the arrows you will get there. And it’s true, you have to park on the highway and walk up a steep paved hill through the college and some dirt road next to some job sites just to get to the trail head but it is worth it! Wear sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and a bathing suit if you want to jump in! It can also be a cool hangout spot if you want to bring lunch, drinks and some music to reward yourself at the top.

Great moderate hike for the whole family. Always nice to see the original M*A*S*H Site.

Trail crosses creek bed, watch for poison oak. Wear long pants and shirt. Much exposure to the sun. Moderate hike in all.

Very challenging hike on the accent for the top 2 miles. Trail is straight up, washed out and deeply scarred.
Much of the trail is covered by tall growth. Watch for poison oak in the waterfall areas. Some cool land marks to see though.

Its a brutal climb to the top with a mountain bike. But well worth it for the view and long descent. The down hill portion is fun, and a little chunky in some parts. But nothing too difficult. Not recommended for beginners though.

There’s no marked parking area. You have to park on the highway and walk about 1.5 miles on a paved road before you even get to the trail. There is trash littered everywhere. Almost all the bigger rocks have been tagged-kids suck. The trails are marked with blue/green/red paint which is somewhat helpful if you ignore the colors and just follow the markings. I took my dogs with me and they played in the water a bit but they smelled like a sewer when we got home.

great trail but careful - I almost stepped on a rattlesnake (Southern Pacific Rattlesnake from doing some research) there today!! Was down by the river about 3 miles in. It was just under a fallen tree trunk about a foot off the ground that I was walking on - from the path to the river.

This could be really beautiful, but people ruined it by leaving trash everywhere and graffitiing the rocks. I don’t understand why people would want to trash something so beautiful!
Leave no trace!

This is a gorgeous hike but I was SO disappointed by how much trash was on the trail. Picked up 17 water/Gatorade bottles and three dog poop bags worth of garbage. I don’t understand how people can hike to enjoy nature and then trash it.

Great trail. You’ll come to an area where you think the trail ends, at this point follow the creek it will guide you back to the trail or just follow the creek to the waterfall. Nice area to hang out by the bottom of the upper falls.

Like everyone else said, this hike has some pretty scenary but the end is a huge disappointment. I guess I should have read the reviews more carefully but you really just end up at a gate at the precipice of Malibu lake... So close, yet so far. Wish it would have ended up at the lake so I could check it out.

I would rate this as really easy. Mostly flat with one part that has a 10 minute incline you have to hike.

One way took me about an hour.

Good cliffs to jump off

This was an awesome hike. the views are great and even the "non-view" areas toward the back half offer entertainment.

This loop is great! Started around 8:30am and did both the Balanced Rock and Tripeaks spurs - Tripeaks was well worth the scramble through the heat. Make sure to take note of the trail on your way up as it can get a bit tricky finding the trail on the way down. There's a lot of skree so you'll definitely need solid hiking shoes/boots.

Route: I went counterclockwise and was relieved to have the continual downhill from Sandstone Peak to end the hike. Also meant that I was more on the valley side earlier when it was less hot.

NOTE: Bring plenty of water (with the extra exploring I did I went about 7.5 miles total and almost went through 3L camel back). I wouldn't bring a dog - way too hot for them!
