great trail very technical

Hike it or 4x4 it. Some rock scramble to the right at the top. Great view of Edison lake!

Great trail. Be careful on the last hairpin switchback. I nosed in, reversed down the trail 150 feet or so to the next switchback which left me pointing forward again and did not require making a somewhat gnarly 3 point turn. Otherwise, the trail is pretty spectacular. I was in a stock 4x4 2018 tacoma and made it no problem. Did scrape my side predator side steps a couple times, but no big deal.

Did this trail today and had a great time. My quad struggled in the cold air/elevation but still made it. Rocks are sharp but my 4 ply tires held up well. You have to take this trail slow but it was worth it to get to the end. Stock 4x4 will be a close call while anything lifted will do fine. Quads and dirt bikes can handle this.

Great trail climb. You don’t really know that you’re climbing till the trail pulls back on itself and you see the valley. Amazing views. There is a lot of loose rock and shale on the trail.

allot of big boulders

Trail is very steep and the rocks are pretty tall. I probably shouldn't have taken my truck down this trail but I did. Luckily I was able to turn around somewhere about 2 miles down the trail. Going back up was easier, but you need a lifted truck with at least 33 inch tires if you don't want to damage anything. This trail is very hard on brakes if you don't have low gearing or crawl control which I have neither. Would be a nice place to go hiking though.

Nice 4x4 road with tight turns.

One day got down the trail and someone tried to take a Toyota Corolla automobile on the trail. It didn’t make it :)

Very easy trail with some tight spots thanks to some fallen trees. I took my stock Jeep renegade and had no problems. Some pretty waterfalls and great views.

Really beautiful hike, great Mountain View’s. We hiked on a Saturday (st Patrick’s Day) was not a sole on a hike. Coming back is mostly uphill. Great hike for you and your dogs!

Just give yourself enough time to get up and back before dark. Don’t take ANY detours. We did and have quite the nightmare story. If I were to do it again I would be smarter and use the trail.

Been to Laurel Lake 44 times! Always 4x4! (mine is a Jeep TJ standard) Talk to a Forest Ranger in Mammoth Lakes--Sometimes they have new updates on trail. Arrive at trail beginning "early" say sunrise up to 11:00 a.m. Then enjoy the drive and peninsula on lake. Peninsula is highest place to legally have a campfire! Wonderful fly fishing here! 7 wonderful hikes around & above lake. When driving back down never, ever leave till 2:00 p.m. ! ! WHY? Road is narrow...just a bit winder than your vehicle! No head on meeting! Very difficult to dive backwards with steep drop offs. Only 2 areas to pass each other and far apart. My Activity: 4x4, fishing, photography, hiking, walking.
Best months to go up: no snow. Saturday can be to crowded---new visitors unaware of narrow road!

The Forestry Service has done an awesome job keeping the trail maintained. Ran through some of the trails off of the main loop in a Jeep JK before heading to Yosemite and had a blast.

Great hike but it's 7 miles up and back, not 5.5, from the gate after driving in 20 minutes on a dirt road from 168. Very inaccurate directions and trail length

Did this trail on a 2005 KTM EXC 450 and had my brother in law with his built up Jeep LJ. For carbed bikes, I highly recomment adjusting your jet. I went down to a 168 but I feel i should have gone down to a 160 since i had the fuel screw turned in heavily. She was definitely gasping for air. For vehicles, I recommend pressuring down and having an air compressor ready. Make sure your tires have a good side wall, the rocks were pretty sharp and plentiful. Didn't catch anything here, but the lake was gorgeous with some snow in the distance.

We ran this short, rocky trail in our stock Polaris RZR in about 2 hours in and out. Several interesting diversion trails and spurs along the way. Although rated Easy, you will want to have a moderately modified vehicle and more than zero rock crawling experience in order to avoid banging the undercarriage on this trail. It can be done if you are careful. The end of the trail will reward you with a breathtaking view, small but hungry fish and definitely a Kodak moment. Plan a half-day and bring lunch for a great ride.

Wife and I drove our almost new, stock Polaris RZR into Strawberry Lake after failing to negotiate the large rock fields on the way to Coyote Lake. On the way in I could not resist spinning a donut in Sand Flat. The trail turns from banked sand to rocks shortly after Sand Flat. The rocky sections were easily negotiated without a spotter. Upon arrival Strawberry Lake was pristine and the camping areas were clean also. The trail is rated "Easy" but would have felt more comfortable driving my Jeep.. I will admit that I don't have much rock crawling experience in a RZR and I kissed a trailing arm lightly going out but otherwise no problems. Total time was about 3 hours in and out which includes an hour break for lunch and photos.

Amazing time and breath taking views. Some tough moments with the jeep, especially the last turn. I saw a ton of razrs up there crushing it. Overall the end results is awesome. Water was sub zero.

It was a nice little off roading with the kids and ended up with some some awesome views

Its really a beautiful hike. We.could have driven to the top but choose to walk up the forest road.
Next time we will take camping gear and stay a few days. There is so much to see on this drive into the mountains

Beautiful views. We could see the smoke in the valley.

Fun, didn't take long.... unless you ask the people sitting in the bed of the truck.

A dull hike with spectacular vistas on both side of the ridge...the trail is above tree line and in the sun.

The trail is fairly easy. Just pretty rocky. There are some good size boulders that require you to need some ground clearance. I did the trail in my 01 Silverado z71. I have a 6" suspension 3" body lift with 37s and went solo with no spotter, but I also do have rock crawling experience.

The trail gets pretty tight. I had to make a couple 3 point turns to get around obstacles, and a few tree I had to fold in my mirrors to squeeze between. The lake itself is amazing. Nice clean, and warm water. Definitely going back

Anyone know whether or not a Polaris Ranger would make it up this road? Wondering if the "High Clearance" would be a problem for a ranger.

Thanks-

Snow stopped us half way up. Nice rocky trail, a couple technical areas with deep ruts & boulders.
But a stock Suburban made it to the camp ground half way up.
