Amazing views and gnarly off shoots for some challenging climbs and drops with high walls

Followed the main trail all the way through with my stock Subaru Forester XT with no issues. Definitely will do again!

Fun drive! Great scenic views, pretty easy driving. Went on a Saturday and didn't see another soul.

Like others mentioned, it's a pretty simple trail that doesn't require 4x4. BUT at the top of the mountain, about 10 miles in, you can drop onto Rowher (Black Diamond rated) trail and get your thrills.

If you want to "Faux-overland" on a day trip from LA you can hit Delsur Trail, drive 2 miles South on Bouquet Canyon Rd and then start this trail for a ~45 mile ride which would take 4-6 hours depending.

We walked from the north end of Pismo Beach to the dunes south of the Monarch preserve for a total of 6.2 miles round trip. The beach wasn’t crowded and it’s beautiful—cliffs, rocks, a few tide pool areas, surfers, waves, birds and dunes. Just skip the trek into Pismo and stay on the beach. It’s really a beautiful beach area.

Did a night run with 5 Rigs a power wagon and a Tacoma. The last off shoot is the craziest, but what an adventure. Heavy moguls and drops. Took my JL first time on a heavy trail. Me and my son had a blast. Ride with the Sons of Thunder 4x4 club. Nice group of men and women. A night run to remember!!!

I DID IT! Woohoo!

More easy than moderate, mostly needs high clearance though X4 is useful at the start.
It's "OK" but not worth going out of your way for, we turned back after a while as it was a little boring compared to the good off-road viewing options.

We didn't see anyone on a weekday.

Very fun trail. I have a 2wd truck and had no problem. Just stay on the fire road. Off shoots are for 4wd vehicles. Nice views

Follow the signs for the Phillips Petroleum. When you get to the entrance veir oo to the right and follow the single lane road across the RR tracks.

Found out why it's called the Sand trail. it's very soft sand. My stock Sahara didn't have the right tires for it once I was deep into the trail. I was barely able to turn around and get out.

fun trail. if you stay on the fire road it could be made in a suv or light truck. we took our lifted jeep and some of the off shots were pretty gnarly. All are passable with the right equipment. We will be back...

Fire road = easy with beautiful views.

Off shoots = some are intimidating, especially to the noobs. Pack of 6 vehicles and 3 incurred minor body damage. Disconnect if you can or else you might find yourself leaning against the mountain walls riding a good line. Expect to use rock rails at some off shoots.

Fun trail, definitely 4x4 if taking the harder routes. Fire road is doable on stock vehicles , possible 4x2.

Drove it 9/3/18 during dry weather,

Really great short drive terrain isn’t to rough but would recommend 4wd or awd. View point at the top is very worth the drive.

Good for someone at the intermediate level that's ready to get off the fire road and try some obstacles for the first time. Remember the trail is very slippery when wet.

love the pines.

At this point its a 3 day mountain biking adventure, starting all the way from the dead end of east Camino Cielo, it's easily about 30 miles now. If you plan on doing it. Please bring water! LOTS OF WATER. If you plan on going walking or biking be very cautious of not breaking or twisting any ankles. If you get stuck out there. You probably won't make it out alive. There is a ranger Outpost about six hours in. Don't expect it to be a walk in the park. You will cry, yell into the silence, bleed, and plead to god that a cloud comes around to offer shade. This back country. The wild...

Awesome trail, as easy or as challenging as you want with all the off shoots. The views are absolutely beautiful.

took my 2007 Nissan Titan 3 inch lift 35 only had to back up and change route ones due to trail conditions otherwise had little trouble going through the trail. manageable in a two-wheel drive if you have decent tires and ground clearance.

I had the same problem as the last review and tried to find the start but ran into the Phillips 66 refinery. I asked the Guard if he knew of any openings in the fence but he said "no". I checked along the fence line and the gates were well locked up and some even had additional fencing behind it. I drove in through the Pismo beach area and it looked like a lot of it had been cordoned off but orange construction fencing. Talked with a Park Ranger and they stated they are trying to preserve and restore areas of the beach. You can still get back in the area, but I HIGHLY recommend bring a full set of MaxxTaxx or traction aids. Beautiful and quiet area though.

Had a fun time running this trail in my 2WD locked 4runner. Took about half the off-shoots, turned around on a few but still had a blast.

I'm in awe of every hiker who has completed this trail and everybody who attempts it. You inspire me. This trail looks fantastic from what I have seen on YouTube and what I have heard about it. I wish I could attempt it but it is physically impossible for me to thru hike it due to medical reasons. You all are awesome. Happy trails... ☺

this trail is best when you do every single off shoot you see instead of the boring fire road. jeeps are able to take all the offshoot lines, which isn't hard if you already have off road experience. however, in a Toyota truck, or 4 runner, the hardest lines will definitely 3 wheel due to lack of articulation with IFS... unless you disconnect front sway bar. the only challenging portions are towards the end, which is also the best part to finish the trail. lockers are not needed here. I've been here twice and towards the end Toyota guys crowd up to watch the jeeps do the steep rutted off shoots. gotta love having a jeep!

Just finished this trail on 4/28/18. loved it, I used my stock 2000 dodge dakota 5.9L V8 4x4 on this trail. So much fun will be doing it again! I have 32 inch tires on 15 inch wheels when I was doing this trail.

It was a really nice trail today. Not too tight with enough room to get around someone. The forest department has provided a very nice staging area off the 138 about 2.5 miles east of the 15fwy. On the 138 there's a forestry sign that says something about Cleghorn staging area next right. When you see the sign, they mean the next right!! A dirt road about 200 feet past the sign. We were towing a green sticker vehicle and were a little concerned when we saw a sign that said no green sticker vehicle on this road. But I guess the sign only referred to the.25 mile dirt road to the staging area. Trash cans and toilets at the staging area--very nice. My buddy and I only had one complaint---people will you please take your trash out with you!!! If you can carry in the beer cans, food wrappers, etc., you can certainly get your shit back home! I am a backpacker for 35 years but the body is having trouble carrying the load, so we're learning the off road experience. We brought one kitchen trash bag for our trash and whatever other trash we may have come across. Crap, we should have brought a dump truck. If we all can't start taking care of our off road areas, the government is just going to say, screw you guys, we're shutting it down!! Let's show a little concern for our wilderness!! Enjoy the drive!!!!

Very well maintained off road trail. Plenty of off-shoots that are much more challenging if you choose. I would totally recommend for any Jeep!

it's badass but really rocky at some points

Great trail. Main trail is easy, but those who want to be challenged can take the alternative routes. These alternative trails tye back to the main trail. Some alternate routes are moderate some are hard core. Take those that meet your rigs ability and skip those that are too much.
