Whew! The inclines were never ending but that’s the joys of summiting mountains! I brought my six year old with me. We did some frequent stops and I put him on my back for a lil bit because I was impatient to summit. He did absolutely great throughout the whole trail. Hit the trail around 10 am. At noon it started to get a little busy. Lots of dogs on this trail, they love it.

The only bummer was the fog. Did not get to see the view. But super proud of my kiddo for completing his first “moderate” hike!

8/4/18: Attempted to hike this trail but it is closed for a unspecified restoration period due to fire damage. (I was required to enter a star rating so matched to the most recent reviews).

Writing a semi-review of this road in the hopes that it's helpful to others who want to head up to Deer Park and are a little intimidated by what they read about this drive.

First off, as stated by others this isn't a hike or something I'd suggest traveling by foot. This is a single lane gravel road to get you up to the Deer Park campgrounds and trailheads. I guess you could walk or run it but I'd be a bit concerned with avoiding cars, or more specifically them freaking out.

I drove up this road on Wednesday during July, the height of tourist season. There are steep drop-offs to the side as you go up. However, while it is definitely a single-car road it is not so narrow that I felt afraid of going off at any given point when by myself. Just go slow and you'll have no issues.

The only time things got hairy were when encountering opposite-direction traffic. There are little pullouts relatively often along the road, some giving more space than others. I went up Wednesday around 10AM and down Thursday around 1PM and only encountered 3 cars both times. Obviously your mileage may vary, and going on the weekends will probably be worse, but in general if you can go during the week and schedule yourself to to when you think people will least likely to be on the road (after the early morning campers pack up and leave, after the day-hikers arrive, etc) you'll probably be fine. And again, the pullouts work well mostly. There are some spots I probably would have been more concerned about than others, but generally everyone works well together to get around safely.

I went up in a Toyota Corolla, no 4WD, and had no issues. It's not super steep, just go slow and careful around the bends and you'll be fine. It was completely dry so exercise more caution after rain.

In summary, I don't think anyone should be intimidated away from making this drive, as the hiking and camping at the end are absolutely spectacular. The road itself is straightforward, and as long as you take it slow you'll have no issues. Your experience will probably come completely down to the traffic you encounter. But it's totally worth it.

Easy, pretty well maintained roads/trail. We headed down from Winthrop and came out through Chelan. Some tight spots, but nothing hard to pass. Great views the whole trip. We even saw a moose on the way up.

We crossed paths with a number of adventure bikes and a caravan 4 days into a BDR trip starting in Oregon. Fairly quiet though. Great morning trip while in the area.

Took trail in mid spring after road opened. Terrific views rewarded the hike. Trail crowd was light but topside was crowded with those who drove up. There are benches to enjoy the view of Mt Rainier but I had to wait my turn to sit down and have the snack I packed to eat after the hike up. Furthermore a group of people were chatting very loudly killing the vibe of the view.

This hike might be better before the road opens.

I ride my dirt bike on this trail, it’s a blast!!!!

Beautiful hike through the forest (hiked 7/7). The trail is well maintained and easy to hike up. I thought this was difficult because of the steep, constant climb. When you reach the summit, don’t stop there; walk the extra half mile past the parking lot to get another view of puget sound.

Did this hike with a friend a few months ago and like all the other reviews have stated, ITS STEEP. You'll definitely be feeling it at the end. If you've got bad knees i highly suggest trekking poles. We werent as fortunate to get the gorgeous views that others have gotten , instead we were rewarded with a ton of fog, and a killer workout!

Discovery Pass is required. We hiked the Yakima rim trail. The trail is well established. And the rocky trail helps at times as stepping stones. There are posts along the way which help as markers. There's good views of Selah, Mt Adam's, and mT Rainier, as well as the Canyon. The mountain side had been recently burnt . At the top looking at the Canyon road we did catch a glimpse of four rams. On hot days there is no shade So be wary of that. Over all, I rate this trail as an easy trail to almost or maybe a moderate trail

Beautiful hike, but not for the faint of heart. It is rated moderate, but is very steep and can destroy someone who is not in the right shape for it.

You'll definitely have spaghetti legs after this hike. Consistent uphill all the way to the top, and a quad killer descent back down. Trail is in great shape, I'm sure the view from the top is awesome when not socked in by clouds.

Difficult at times, and really discouraging when you get to the top and see cars and a lot of people.

This is definitely a harder hike, very consistently up hill on the way up without really any break. It took us a while, but I had our 25 pound toddler on my back and we took quite a few breaks. The view at the end was beautiful, well worth it.

hard hike

Good Conditioning trail :)

loved this. killer elevation gains were incredibly worth it! Between our gear and the switchbacks, we were dead exhausted at the summit. The views as you ascend peak through here and there but the top was incredible. plan on returning again soon!

Very difficult hike. Definitely worth driving to the top but the hike is almost straight up the whole time. It was rainy and cloudy when we went so there was basically no view but I'm sure it's beautiful when it's clear. The mileage is a little off-the hike is 4 miles round trip

was pretty rough took my stock Dakota with my wife's bronco and my buddies frontier got lost and got pretty rough be besides that it was fun wouldn't take anything bigger though got pretty tight on some trails, the trails go from easy to very hard but we had fun got lost then had to get help out only reason for 4 starts the trails go from easy to hair wrecking

Beautiful hike. Currently 30weeks pregnant and got pretty winded at times but overall it wasn’t too bad. Great trail to bring my dog on as well.

A leg burner for sure, and great cardio workout. Views left a little to be desired and there are better hikes in the area. But great to be outside nonetheless.

Great workout on a super steep but short hike. Clear views at the top today.

Excellent hike / workout that is sort but sweet - beautiful views at the top!

Great trail that will give you a workout. It was great for the dog. The lookout at the top was a bit socked in so the view can be a bit lackluster if conditions are right.

I chose this trail due to its Moderate rating in difficulty, but damn, it was definitely a reminder of how out of shape I am. Bring hella water. This trail does not let up, it’s literally straight steep for 2 miles. So just a little warning if you get a little huffy and puffy like me. If I would have known, I would have chose a longer hike with less of an incline ! Haha the view is totally worth it though!

Soooo much fun
