drove up the road in a Chevy van rear wheel drive. as long as you have decent clearance you can make it. We camped and hiked up devil's thumb across the ridge and down to kings lake.

Amazing views along with some nice mix of challenging trails. good mix of high speed and slow crawling. Still, snow up high but made it to 12,500 today.

The road to the trailhead is very rough, you definitely need high clearance and 4WD to get all the way. There were no cars parked at the trail head. Cars could probably make it a bit past the Mt Massive trailhead, to within about 1 mile of the trailhead, where there are some campsites to park at. But depending on your vehicle, it may be safest to not try.

The hike itself offered beautiful views of many surrounding mountains and was generally easy to follow. It is very steep at times, and you definitely want to be fully acclimated before attempting. Before you reach the first lake, the trail forks, and could be easy to miss. To the right is a path up to a waterfall, and to the left is the lake(s). The AllTrails map doesn't include hiking up to the second lake, though there's definitely a faint trail going there and it's not a bad quick addition if you still have the energy at the top. We only saw one other set of hikers the whole time we were on the trail.

Went for a ride with 7 other jeeps today. Awesome trail - nice length. Took up most of the day with the occasional stop to take in the sights. Gets very narrow/steep at some points so if you’re going with a group make sure you look ahead. A few tricky spots but my stock JL made it no problem.

Without an ATV or FWD better park at the Mt Massive trailhead. From there the hike along the dirt road to the trailhead is over one hour. Halfway up the trail, it gets extremely confusing where the trail supposedly goes. There are no clear signs. I spent over 2 hours hours up there circling around trying to find my way and never made it to any lakes(s), turning back in frustration as it was getting later and later and hiked the 3 hours plus back to the car.
Re. lady with her toddlers below, I am positive you must have been at another lake. The 'trail' gets pretty steep in areas climbing over boulders while you're holding onto tree limbs.

Lakes, wildflowers, marmots and stunning views. Awesome hike!

A great way to get to some Alpine views quickly and without incident, also great for avoiding the crowds on St. Mary's and Loch Lomond.

Gate open as of July 28th 2018 and almost totally dry up there.

Rocky and uneven, but there are bypasses at all the tricky spots and nothing too intense. - no steep drop-offs, etc.

Fun trail to go on with good views. Drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude Edition 4x4. The beginning of the trail is a little rough but evens out the further you go up. Definitely doable. Never made it to the peak due to a storm blowing in.

Dirt road through the mountain, nothing exceptional but drive it down in the evening for relaxation.

This is one of the prettiest bikes that I have done in Colorado. It is a long drive back in and it a 1 lane road when you get back closer to trailhead. I would recommend a 4wd once you past the first trailhead parking for Mt. Massive. Our GPS reading showed that it was 6 miles not 5.4. Well worth the drive.

Just came back from a road trip. I drove from south to north , 3 hours with few stops for breaks and photos. Amazing view! Pretty sure that driving from north to south could be more difficult, you will have two very steep hills. Didn't have any problems with my Bubba (Wrangler Sport, 2 doors, 35 tires, 2.5" lifted).

Easy off road trail. We live here half the year, so we give directions in this area a lot

Not very interesting or very fun.

They aren't opening this up to vehicles until July 15th according to a little birdie. I hiked up it a couple weeks ago and still saw a few vehicles and a couple drifts. How did they get up there? Two weeks ago I went again on foot and most of the snow drifts are gone but it's been getting hit with rain.

Amazing hike!! Took the 3 and 4 year olds so it took a while but the views were amazing!!! Had to park about .3miles away from the trailhead. Long hike for the kids but they loved the lake!!

One of the most stunning hikes I've done in Colorado. They're were so many wild flowers! The lakes are gorgeous! I can't say enough good things!

Just drove the main trail to the top in a stock 2005 honda pilot with no issues. It has electric locking diffs that I had to use just once. Lol was lots of fun. Plenty of wildlife. View from the top is as good as they get

Not too hard it’s moderate. You definitely need a full on 4x4 vehicle to get all the way up to the top of the mountain. Amazing scenery. Loved this place

Pretty rocky. Only made it to the gate about 1.5 miles up from the neighborhood. Super easy up to that point.

The beginning of the trail is very open and not much to look at (starting at the south end). However, as the trail goes north it gets more interesting. We took an offshoot to the Mammoth Gulch Reservoir which has plenty of camping. The ghost town of Apex seemed unfriendly(a lot of posted signs) so we turned around and didn’t check it out.

Awesome trail system. Had a blast climbing to the 3 way intersection and mining area. Can’t go any further than that as of 5/30/2018. Too much snow still left on the trail. Other wise it was clear and great all the way up to 11,500ft.

Road blocked off by snow drifts that are impassable as of May, 19 2018. In a 4 inch lifted jeep it was not possible for us. Come back when its warmer.

Do not waste you’re time with this road. Simple as that.

Confirmed from Andrews experience. Went today and didn’t get very far after that first big switchback. Don’t get stuck, wait a few mor weeks!

Update May 28. Road is free of snow and was a great ride up to Dakota Hill! Took moon and gamble on the way back down to Rollins. Recommended!
