A fast 23 mile in and out that took about 4-5 hours with a couple of stops. Starting at the trailhead off of US60, the trail winds its way through the relatively flat land of state owned land until you get to the Reymart Trail split off. From there it becomes a little more hilly and have to cross a few washes. As you get closer to Ajax mine, the path become more narrow and more rocky but nothing you can't handle and then it suddenly opens up at Ajax with the or processing building appearing on your right. Up above and behind the building, we found a saguaro cactus being strangled by trees. Further up the trail, we found a filled in mine (or maybe it was a test hole).

Returning the way we came, we turned right where the trail splits and climbed a relatively steep grade up to the Woodpecker mines. We visited four mines and counted a few more in the area.

At the junction of 5 trails (two of which take you to Box Canyon), we took the southwesterly trail and climbed the hill, at the top, we made a right and climbed another trail some more to the peak and enjoyed the view and luck for about an hour. Looking down below we saw side-by-sides, atvs, motorcycles, and 4x4s driving past.

We will definitely come back and take other trails in the area.

Take Price Road to trail...much easier an shorter than Cottonwood trail..

Very entertaining trail. Leads to Old Reymert Mine from 1800's. Also of interest along the way is a shack called the Sugar Shack complete with furniture. It is open for your inspection. Beautiful scenery along the way.

Box Canyon is amazing!! It has some difficult places, but we had no problem in a four wheel jeep. Others did fine in Razors and Four Wheelers.
Come back the same way you came in, unless you have LOTS of hours of daylight to find you way past there. We have not, as yet.
Today, we went way up Sandman Road, off of Price Road, in hopes of hitting & turning right Cottonwood Canyon Road, and coming through to Box Canyon. In spite of what the map says, Sandman does NOT go through!! It is barricaded at The Gravel Express pit!! And there is a locked gate on Sandman, on the other side of the pit! Take our word for it!!

Views were beautiful! Will definitely do again! Lots of different trails to explore.

Took up a full size bronco and a 05 f150. Great fun ride. Most obstacles weren’t too technically challenging but it is a close fit for such large vehicles in a handful of places. You definitely get uncomfortably close to the edge of some drop offs.

The Coke Ovens are located on private property and the owner is aggressively protecting his ownership rights. Beware.

We found the Staging Depot pretty easily, stub led across an old mine, an old rusted out civic about 200-300 yards up. Over great day, beautiful views.

See a piece of AZ history with the ovens. Be respectful of the area and help clean up to keep this gem intact.

2 Ash Creeks near Wilcox. This one reviews the one in the Pineleno Mountains that descends 7000' and runs most of they year. It is somewhat bikeable but very tough, loose, steep and expect mucho downfall.
The other Ash Creek is in the Galiuro Mountains and has hundreds of maples for incredible autumn color. Aspens as you climb higher. The trail heads to the East Divide Trail and then Bassett Peak, the highest in the range.

Really great trip especially on an ATV. Try doing the 37 mile loop through Box Canyon. It is worth it!!!!

Awesome trip especially if using an ATV. Try the 37 mile loop through Box Canyon if you can. It is worth it!!!!

Love this trail. The canyon is beyond amazing. Great entrance up to the coke ovens, and the Gila river.
Just don't get too cocky during your water crossing and drown your rig like I did!!
Can't wait to go back!!!
