A friend and I are considering hiking Wright, Algonquin and Iroquois this summer. We’d like to pitch a tent and camp overnight on the trail somewhere - that way we can take our time and do all three peaks over a two day period. Anyone know a good camping spot somewhere on the trail?

Summited both Algonquin and Wright today 1/15/19. Just short of 9 mile RT. Trails were all packed down. I used crampons the entire way. Good sharp microspikes would also have been ok. First mile is easy. Second mile moderate. Third mile moderately difficult and after that steep and difficult. Algonquin summit is hard to follow. Back down I went up Wright. Steep up but only 4/10ths of a mile. Well marked with cairns. 7 hours for the round trip.

Completed 1/2/18. Was only able to summit Algonquin peak and had to pass up Wright due to time- so round trip was a little over 7 miles for me. Took me about 2 hours to reach the top of Algonquin and the same headed back- little over 4 hours round trip. Micro spikes or something of that nature is absolutely necessary for winter hiking here, pretty icy and steep grade at times. Easy going hike to the base of the mountain and then it gets tough. I’m a moderately experienced hiker in decent enough shape and this was a very challenging hike for me- there are some extremely strenuous portions and the ascent can be unrelenting at times. That being said, it’s difficulty wasn’t over the top and any one looking for a very challenging but do-able hike should consider this route. Summiting Wright would obviously have made this hike much more difficult so keep that in mind. Absolutely one of the most rewarding hikes I’ve competed, ever. The 360 view of the surrounding Adirondacks and the above tree line scenery is breathtaking. The path is a little hard to find near the summit, so take your time finding it and DO NOT STRAY OFF. The vegetation there in some cases are thousands of years old and incredibly slow growing. Very memorable hike.

Did this trail in winter, easy if you’re prepared for it as it certainly requires some mild athleticism towards the top. If hiking in winter bring microspikes or snowshoes and definitely goggles for the summit push. Be prepared to break a sweat. Extremely rewarding.

This was my first attempt at hiking a high peak in the Adirondacks. I thought I was hiking Wright peak, but took a wrong turn at the sign at base of the mountain. I was told by another hiker once I reached the peak. It was MUCH MORE DIFFICULT than I ever imagined, but am soooo glad I did it!! And don’t believe these other hikers when they say it was easy!! It wasn’t!!!

Elk Lake approach closed 6-weeks ago. Late start 8 AM. Had to start from Route 73 from Bouquet river. Trail crosses river from East to West on way to east Dix. 3inches of snow on top. Icy northern slopes required micro spikes. Toward summit, branch barriers intended to prevent people hiking north from Macomb from veering off main trail. Completed all 5 peaks ivy 7 PM. Enjoyed sunset on top of Dix. Ended at Ausable Club. Back to car by 2AM. Round Lake return would have saved 2-hours. A fun adventure requiring 7-hours of battery life to hike out. Recommend more traveled approach. No Sprint cell service along route. Switched to Verizon.

Did this as part of a loop with Armstrong and coming down Beaver Meadow trail. Took me 9.75 hours, including short stops. Toughest part was coming up UWJ, LWJ is not difficult. Crampons needed above 3600'. Only 1/2'' of snow.

Went up today, 10/30. Beautiful trail, progressively more difficult as you go. Definitely bring spikes and plan for snow, very steep and slippery in some areas. Had to stomp through nearly 3 feet of snow once passed the tree line to get to the peak. Super windy, very cold, no view, but still worth the trip. I'd definitely do this trail again if promised a view. Experienced hikers, round trip almost exactly 6 hours.

Hiked Algonquin on 10/24/18. This is a relatively easy hike up until the fork at Wright and Algonquin. It was very icy with at least 2-3 inches of snow on the ground. Too cloudy and cold and windy to enjoy the view(or lack thereof). Couldn’t see too well due to the clouds and snow. Had to follow previously made footprints to actually make it to the top. Cairns were just barely visible. If anyone is planning this hike bring microspikes and don’t go when a snowstorm is expected. Lol

Had a great time hiking this trail with one of my best friends. Perfect weather, and beautiful foliage. 10/10 would recommend

This hike starts out easy, and gets tougher right when you reach avalanche lake. It is lots of fun scrambling and hiking along waterfalls. It was too foggy at the top of Algonquin peak to see much, but I imagine on a clear day it’s breathtaking. Great views anyways, and highly recommended.

10/8/18 was a great hike and as you continued your climb it became increasingly more steep. It was almost like a warm up for what was to come. I decided to do Wright peak first which I think was a good idea since after I did Algonquin I decided to go the “extra mile” and do Iroquois as well. Not sure I would have had it in me after both of those peaks to come back and do Wright. All in all it was a decently difficult hike. Technically 4 peaks total but boundary isn’t recognized as a 46er because of its close proximity to Algonquin, nevertheless I like to make myself feel better by saying I tackled 4 peaks. Total time for me was 6 hours 15 minutes from trailhead to trailhead using my garmin watch it somehow clocked me at 16.1 miles total. So something might have been off between my watch and the trail signs. I don’t know. The views at each peak were obscured by total cloud coverage so I didn’t spend much time at any peak really but I did stop multiple times on the lower levels to see some foliage and enjoy the beauty of the trails. Would love to do them again on a clear day if I could.

This hike is unbelievable. It was my very first time hiking any of the 46 ADK peaks, and I started right in with Wright & Algonquin! They were amazing to say the least. We did Wright first, very steep 0.4 mile from where the trail splits into Wright or Algonquin. The views were BREATHTAKING! Heart lake looked glorious from up there, and there’s the plaque in dedication to the helicopter that crashed there in 1922 (i think?). The way down was actually just as challenging, which I never took in to account! Very slippery!
Algonquin was 0.6 from trail split, not as challenging but not easy. Unfortunately by the one we got up there we were in a cloud, which was actually quite interesting, but you couldn’t see anything. Looking forward to doing it again, hopefully with a view!

Absolutely beautiful hike

I started off with no firm intent of doing all 3 summits, and Wright was a rough one to start with as it is pretty steep and extremely windy. But weather was otherwise great and I felt in great shape so off to Algonquin I went. There is a long portion above tree-line and thus fantastic views - you hardly notice you're climbing on that last part! Trip to Iroquois was fun and not very strenuous. To get there you need to turn right, instead of left, as soon as you drop below tree-line South of Algonquin. Round trip took me 8.5 hours with short stops on each summit.

A challenging but rewarding hike with amazing views and fall foliage. We got to the parking lot at 5:45 A.M., and all the regular spots were filled so we had to create one that was still reasonable within the parking lot. Trail was very muddy from all the rain so wear waterproof boots because it’s unavoidable to not step in mud. Elevation gain was killer so be prepared. It took us a total of 12 hours to finish the loop starting up Macomb and ending at Dix. We stopped at each peak, but not for too long, we just had to stop 10 min after each peak to take off some layers. AWESOME HIKE - just plan ahead!

Unbelievable hike! Starts off relatively flat and gets increasingly harder as you make your way up. There is a lot of big boulders and rocks as well as big flat rocks that can be quite slippery coming down. The last little bit starting at the fork between Wright & Algonquin peak is quite strenuous, but the views make it totally worth it! We did both Algonquin & Wright which took us about 6 and a half to 7 hours. We did this hike without hiking poles but I would probably recommend them due to the scrambling/slippery rocks. Don’t forget to pack warmer clothes because it is very cold on the top of the mountain. We had our dog with us and she did great! We were advised it can be tough for dogs but it is definitely do-able for anyone wondering! Overall this hike is a very fun one, although quite difficult.

This trail was tough but so rewarding. I was able to complete it in 7 hours, and I am a decently experienced hiker. I could see this taking 10+ hours, so plan accordingly!
I started with Wright which was the toughest ascent in my opinion because it had just rained and the steep rocks were hard to get a grip on. Algonquin was great, definitely tiring but doable, and the stretch from there to Iroquois was pretty easy as there is not much elevation change. There’s one large waterfall and several small ones on the way up. All in all a great hike - probably the hardest ADK I’ve done yet but spectacular scenery!

Would not suggest doing this range unless your going to be a 46er. Its a very hard climb up ward brook getting quite steep for the last mile or so, your next to water most of the time up to Seward so there is a lot of wet rock slabs and mud to maneuver around. Going between the mountains in the range is no picnic either (do Seymour another day) after Seward you have to climb down a very steep section before hooking west down into mud just to come back up again. The map shows a more direct route between the peaks than you actually take. in reality it does take about an hour to reach each peak because you have to swing out down the mountain before heading back up to the next summit. There is an astounding amount of mud that stays between these peaks, we went when there hadn't been rain for a week and there mere multiple sections with mud 6 inches deep or more even. All and all it was an experience to be remembered total trip from ward brook lean to emmons and back took 10 1/2 hours, we came back in the night time after leaving at 9 am so bring your head lamps just in case. Just make sure you give yourself enough time and water to make the trip, and your boots need to be in top condition, otherwise good luck...
P.S. keep you eyes out for small cut arounds near harder sections for rocks and mud, found quite a few extra ways to avoid wet slabs and mud pits

This was a beautiful trail. Cascades, deer, lots of moss. It was definitely challenging towards the last mile up lower wolf jaws and then to upper wolf jaws. Very muddy along the way to upper.
Some climbing over rocks that requires hands as well, but fun.
Was going to do Armstrong with them but didn’t gage our time properly and thought we’d have more.
Took us 11 hours for lower and upper.

Took us just about 10 hours, with moderate length breaks on multiple of the peaks and short scattered rests while hiking. Views were excellent, but the summits were a LOT colder than the woods so be sure to dress in layers! Definitely bring gloves, even if it is warm out. There is a lot of up and down in this hike, with very few flat sections. You essentially have to summit 6 times if you do Wright, Iroquois, and Algonquin in the out and back method shown here. I'd definitely do Wright first, because after that the rest of the hike seems easier.

Also, something that we did not know before we started is that there is a 4th mountain (in between Algonquin and Iroquois) that you have to hike called Boundary mountain. It isn't considered a high peak due to distancing rules, but it still has decent views and since you have to go over it twice, it does add some difficulty to the hike.

Here's a more detailed timeline of our trip:
Started at 8:00 AM from the Loj trailead.
Got to the sign splitting the Wright and Algonquin trails at about 10 AM. From here it took us less than an hour to summit Wright, but it was steep. The views were not that great, since it was early and too cloudy.
Reached the summit of Algonquin at about 12:15 PM, excellent views at this time. (As expected, the clouds from the morning tend to clear up by around noon.)
From there, we stayed on the peak for a bit and then left for Iroquois. It took us about a full hour (a little less) to get from Algonquin to Iroquois, and then the same to get back to Algonquin again.
We then left the peak of Algonquin at just about 2:40 pm, and arrived at the Loj at about 5:40 PM.
We were going pretty slowly on the way down due to fatigue from the constant ups and downs of the trail.
Also, worth noting that if you have never hiked out of the Loj before and are going on a weekend, try to get there early. We arrived at 7:30 and barely got a parking spot. Also, be prepared to pay $10 cash for parking.

Great hike. Took us about 10 hrs and we consider ourselves average hikers. Arrived at the Log at about 7:45 am and the lot was almost full. I would suggest doing Wright peek first. You may not want to do it on the way back after you go up and down both sides of Algonquin. Very cold on the peeks dress warm.

The trail to Algonquin starting from the ADK Loj is relatively easy from the trailhead to the Marcy Dam area but gets increasingly difficult as it progresses. Plenty of cobbles to traverse.Continues to ascend quickly. Fun though. The final approach to the summit offers some great views. As does the summit itself.We hiked down off Algonquin over to Boundary then up to Iroquois. Back to Algonquin then down to the base of Wright. Wright is fairly tough as it ascend quite quickly. Great views. Check out the plane crash plaque and debris.The hardest part of Wright was that it was our third summit of the day.But why not get all three while right there. Be in good shape for this hike.

I'm convinced this range is cursed. Our 2nd attempt. Hit Santa & Panther, not enough sunlight for Couch. Did Santa first, which was nice. Great views towards Panther/Couch. Stayed on Panther peak to watch the beginning of the sunset before hiking the 1.5/2 miles back to the lean-to area. We followed the herd path down from Harold sq and it seemed to come to a dead end. Backtracked to find where we went wrong, but got turned around. Tried to use the Alltrails app, compass, and paper map to get us on trail, but didn't have any luck. We ended up bushwhacking with our headlamps for an hour until we hit Bradley Pond. We finally circumvented from there an found the trail towards our site. It was especially worrisome when we both smelled bear urine, so we were happy to make it back. We promptly packed out the next morning

Awesome hike!

Parking- I didn't realize the trailehead and parking lot is located on private property. Driving up Elk Lake Rd you'll come across many private property and posted signs. That confused me, but the parking lot is public. The lot was full by 6:30am. I spoke to a hiker who got there at 6pm the night before and he said there were only a few spots. Another hiker said the lot was full when he arrived at 4:30am. The overflow lot is 2 miles down the rd. from the trailhead.

I went up Macomb and down Dix. I did this simply because I wanted a view on my way up the mountain. Dix is all forest until you're at the summit. If you go up Macomb at least you have an awesome view if you take a break. The trail is great and easy to follow. It was pretty muddy. The only hiccup I ran into was missing the turn for slide brook trail. It comes on quick. It's right at the campsites about 50 ft. before the lean to. If you hit the lean to you've gone to far. Each summit has a great view. I was lucky enough to have each summit to myself for at least 10 minutes.

I left the trailhead at 7:30am and got back at 6pm. I spent 15-30 minutes on each peak. My Fitbit clocked the loop as being 20 miles not 14.3. I brought 2L of water. There is water on the descent from Dix in which I was able to fill another liter. Lots of rock scrambling- especially on the descent from Dix. I think I'm in pretgy good shape and was able to run a bit of the trail. I still found parts of it challenging but totally worth it. Met a lot of nice people on the trail but was able to be solo for most of it.

Tolling trail on a hot day. Completed this last summer, never reviewed it. Beautiful river + bridges to start out, very easy wooded walk at the start. Waterfall along the way makes the whole hike worth it. Took off my boots + socks and cooled my feet off in it on the way back. Very cold! Lower wolfjaw trail to the summit at the split is definitely tiring but a nice little summit. Nothing special. Back on track to upper wolfjaw and there is a pretty prominent false summit prior. Huge boulder on the false summit, fun to climb on for a picture or two. Last stretch of trail before upper wolfjaw is pretty steep, lots of climbing. Works your hands pretty good. Descent wasn't bad at all. Overall a nice trail, if you have the stamina I highly recommend turning this trail into the Great Range Loop and add Armstrong, Gothics, Pyramid and Sawteeth. Some of our group last year didn't have the stamina but I wish we could have done those as well.

Day trip, all 5 Peaks. My iWatch logged 19 miles, which is far more than the OP’s 14.1 or other reviewers’ ~16. Went up the Macomb side which has a several hundred foot sandy rock slide that was steep but doable, could see it being challenging to unsafe as a down climb. First three miles are pretty flat but it gets steeper after the camping area, then moderate to flat once you get up into the range. Nothing so challenging as the rock slide before Macomb. Downclimb from Dix is steep but safer. Clear herd paths the entire way after the camp area both sides of the loop. Bring plenty of water — I didn’t and didn’t have purifiers for any of the streams in the last 3 miles back. 8am-6pm for a 10 hour hike total, with ample stops on Macomb and Dix and rests in other places (~1 hour total?)

Hiked the Dix range 8/31/18. Started the ascend via the Macomb slide. Macomb slide wasn’t to bad, just make sure you make your way to the right as soon as possible and go up the right. Enjoyed views from the first 3 peaks then the clouds rolled in. Views from east Dix are amazing! The hike to Hough was the toughest in the range but definitely doable. Spent about 30 mins on each summit which made a day really long day. Descend via the beckhorn trail. Total moving time 10 hours. Definitely look forward to doing east Dix again to enjoy the views again. I will also go back to do Hough and Dix to see what views I was missing but I will probably ascend the Lilian brook trail. Amazing hike and all trails helped me tremendously to make sure we were on the right herd path
