This is not skyline. This is the dozer line that was opened up during the fire. Skyline is just to the north. It’s hot and steep. A good workout.

I love this hike. I been here many times just because its such a beautiful hike.
First off, The parking is great with lots of space. Bathrooms are a bit dirty. Bring your own toilet paper!. the hike to the mine over the white gate beginning point is moderate. 2 miles of beautiful scenery and nature. At points a bit slippery so hold on to your kids and dogs. Once you make it to the Mine, the views are amazing for pictures and sunsets. when you enter the mine. bring flashlights

Good trail to hike up with no shade . Be sure to bee enough water during hot season, moderate hike you can run down hill after the Dobler “Big white round ball at the peak”
There’s are some fun trail along the fire road.

Great hike, gives you a good workout and beautiful views. I took my kids and our dog and they had no problem getting to the mine. My kids loved exploring in the mine it was fun... just take flash lights and you'll be ok. I would of given this trail 5 stars, but there is way too much graffiti and trash everywhere.

Loved this trail! Nobody in our group had to use trekking poles. This is a rocky trail! I wish someone would have posted that! This is a dog friendly trail. There are nice spots with shade to rest. Lots of bees at the mine! Nobody got stung but they were annoying. Many places for photo opportunities. Please take your trash with you leave no trace! Great hike for children’s 8 and up. Keep your dogs on a leash. Have fun!

Pretty cool trail. Great views. Watch out for rattlesnakes when you get to the mine. Had a run in with one of them. You don’t know fear until you hear that death rattle.

The mine has such great views. Has always been a favorite hike. Last time I went, there was a lot of trash, so don’t forget to clean up after yourselves.

Decided to go on this hike last minute after dinner during the last bit of light for the day. Sunset is a perfect time for this trail during the summer, as you get to enjoy pockets of sun and shade, as well as views of sun struck mountains and clouds. I started the trail at the entrance located west of the entrance to Descanso Gardens. The trail is steep at first but then opens up to some easy inclines. Looking down into the valley below you can observe Descanso Gardens, and if you’ve ever been there, it’s a cool perspective to get above everything and see how the whole place is laid out. I caught a great sunset over the city of Montrose near Verdugo Hills Hospital. I only saw one trail runner and a couple out on the trail, so it seems relatively less traveled, but that might have been because it was later in the evening. This is an easy hike that almost anyone could accomplish.

Hope you enjoy!

love this little trail! peaceful, not too crowded, but civilization not too far off if you're inexperienced. beautiful animals and foliage. lots of bees and red ants though.

really nice and easy walk through. bring a pair of sandals just in case you want to dip your feet in the ocean and cool off. great halfway reward before heading back.

Very calm, not packed in the morning, parking is easy to find if you go early. The scenery is amazing .

please avoid the night hike! We encounter 4 aggressive mountain lions. We didn't get to finish the hike. follow skyhighhiking on I.g for more adventure.

Great for Winter hiking,

Nice hike with the kids. Graffiti was disappointing but we enjoyed ourselves very much.

This used to be one of my favorite hikes. I have not been on it for about a year. I was so dissapointed today, because the graffiti has gotten way worse. It used to be just at the mine itself. well now it's all the way along the trail, even on Trees. Somone needs to find these creeps and spay paint all over thier bodies and see how they like it. Disgusting and very sad. We went this morning, the view is still amaxing from the mine. We went up super early to avoid the heat, so we didnt see any hooligans. it was very depressing to see the destruction of nature.

You’re drawn in by all the photos you’ve seen of the mine and it’s window framed view of Thunder Mtn, Mt Baldy, and Iron Mtn. Well, the other side of this popular and easy hike is that it brings taggers, punk kids that litter, and folks that just want to get drunk and high at the mine. One and done.

It’s got nice views once you get off the fire road but there is also so many fallen trees and obstacles in this overgrown section up to Mooney. It’s an easy enough Peak to bag if you’re a completist. Really beautiful wildflowers along the way but beware the one with the purple flowers. Here be poodle dog bush. Very poisonous.

Saw a snake. Great views. I really enjoyed the hike

The trail starts in a camp ground, where there is no parking available for hikers. This entire mountain seems unfriendly toward day trip hikers. It might be possible to hike this trail if you park at McKay Park and hump up the hill to the camp ground.

We were two families with kids aged 4 and 5 with us. It is a great hike with lovely weather. There are some rocky narrow patches but nothing that cannot be done if the kids cooperate. The mine is quite old. Nice view of the mountains and the river basin. We also encountered a mini waterfall near the mine. It was quite refreshing. The trail is partly shaded. Parking lot is big. We reached at 11.30 am on Sunday and there were lot of parking spaces left. The restroom on the trailhead - not clean. The greenery on the trail is really welcoming and we saw lots of beautiful wildflowers. All in all - a nice family hike on Father's day!

Good mountain bike trail. Pretty easy to follow and it was clear when I went the wrong way so I just had to turn back. Links up at the top of the mountain with a couple other trails headed toward Crafton College but I turned back. Only a couple technical spots depending on which line you take coming down the hill.

Awesome trail. Great views

I did this hike on 6/06/18.
bring plenty of water no shade, except that Beeks place. last part of the hike entailed steep down Hills loose gravel and dirt hiking poles helped greatly. bring some snacks as you may want to take a break, start early.

Great reward of a view/location for a short hike. Elevation gain is not too bad, pretty easy but I am in decent shape. Maybe about 45min one way. I went about 1/4 mile into cave...but its pitch black, wouldn’t go in w/o a good lamp. Who knows how far it goes but there are several deviations in cave.

Was a great trail, but wouldn’t say easy and I’m in great shape. Few slippery spots and narrow areas. Be mindful that you are in the wilderness. Saw a king snake, was informed by two separate hiking groups of a rattler near the cave by the mine. Also saw a deer crossing the hillside.

This was a fun hike! We got a late start driving up from LA (2:30pm), which actually worked to our advantage because a lot of the morning traffic was heading back to the parking lot and we had most of the trail and the mine to ourselves! The weather was also perfect - 77° and sunny. You’ll definitely break a sweat on a couple of the steeper climbs, but for the most part the trail is a nice gradual incline. There are a few areas that are washed out which feels a little sketchy, but totally fine if you just concentrate and watch your footing. The scramble up to the mine itself is also a little sketchy, but totally doable. We were back to the car around 5pm - we took our time on the way up taking photos and breaks to take in the views and we hung around the mine for a good 15-20 mins. My only negative about this trail is all the graffiti and destruction to the landscape. I will never understand what motivates people to tag graffiti on mother nature. Aside from that, this is a great hike and the views from the mine are absolutely amazing.
