Great as long as you go early

My wife and I drove from Olympic NP in the morning (after spending the week there) to do this hike before catching the red eye out of SEA and we are so glad we did. Amazing scenery with lots of wildlife (we counted 17 marmots) and wildflowers (past peak but there we still some stragglers). Since it was later in the afternoon it was actually pretty quiet and secluded once you got away from the crowds at the visitor center. One of our favorite hikes of the week.

Insanely crowded. I felt like I was in a single file line going up.

It took about 2h30m getting to the lake and 1h30m going down for my team. It was so windy at the lake while we got there (about 2pm).

The trail itself is great, but it's heavily trafficked

great hike!!! lots of stairs!!! went early beat the crowds!!!

11/10/18

We got to the trail around 10AM and we didn't see another person the entire time, until we were almost back to the car. It ended up being a beautiful, sunny day and the views were amazing. Well worth the trek up.

As another person said, it's pretty easy to miss the sign that says trail. As soon as you walk out of the trees, there's a great opening to see Mt. Rainier and it's easy to get distracted and miss the small sign. Be sure to look behind you as you probably passed it. There is another trail if you continue walking straight, but from what I read, it's a bit more of a scramble.

The trail was pretty narrow the entire way and there was already a light layer of snow. It was manageable without micro spike but there were a few slippery moments. As soon as you're out of the trees and start the switchbacks, that's where you feel the gain. It wasn't terrible, but I did have to take a few short breaks here and there (I'd say I'm about an average hiker). The closer we got to the top, the more snow started to appear. Probably a few inches already. I'd suggest when going down to at least have spikes or hiking poles, but that's me personally.

Road conditions - there was already snow on the road and there were a few moments, mostly going downhill, that we slid a little bit. The road itself wasn't bad and parts of the drive were a bit exposed, so take your time.

Google maps had us make a right turn about 6-8 miles(ish) (once we were on the dirt road) which had a pretty big pot hole, but it's not actually a road. It dead ends into woods a couple hundred feet up. Keep to the left/straight and it will meet up again with the road google tries to tell you to take. The parking lot to the trailhead isn't very big at all and you see a trail sign but there's no name to it.

It was an easy hike... it got cold at the top. Enjoy the hike.

The trail is nice. It’s a good scenic trail with lots of cool places to stop and take pictures. The only bad thing is it’s a popular trail. Once you get to the top, you’ll be fighting for places to stop and take a break or pictures. We went on a Saturday morning and we were at the top with about 50 other people who had the same idea as we did today. The parking lot fills fast and people started parking on the street before the parking lot. So, we’ll definitely go back on a Wednesday morning or something so it won’t be so crowded.

Very pretty, easy hike. It's great for a fall/winter hike when the skies aren't as clear. Can't believe how many big and small falls there are.

good for kids

this hike from trail head to lake only about 3 miles one way. easy and pretty.

Wonderful fun run with plenty of hills and views. Great fresh air. Beautiful run.

Great variety of trails and meadows and beach. Doesn’t even feel like you’re in Seattle !

Great hike for all age groups. If you’re not a beginner, I’d recommend trail running as well. Breathtaking views from the cliff. You can continue further if you wish as the trail continues further. Took us 3 hours from car to car including breaks. Would highly recommend for sunrise.

backpacking

Went backpacking with my daughter, her 1st trip and it was a perfect blend of difficulty and reward. At the top of Ingalls pass,we did get confused on how tondrop down into headlight basin as there were branches placed blocking what looked like the obvious way down, but after a bit of a scramble we made it. plenty of creeks for water. Recommend scrambling up to the lake from the basin (counterclockwise) as there were hardly any people. once we got to the lake there were himers who took the clockwise trail to the lake.

Steep for kids, but amazing views and great lookout at the top. Mountain stream just over halfway up.

This was a beautiful trail. I went with a large group of CrossFit folks. The ones leading were pretty competitive, so the pace wasn’t great. I’ll set the pace next time and try it clockwise for something different. Also doing it in October, you miss the beautiful wildflowers.

K and I did this one in the rain. The Falls look great. Per NOAA the Skykomish flow was over 35.2 KCFS. The trail is in good shape, not too much of a crowed.

Perfect and easy little hike!

Rain at the TH turned into a blizzard at higher elevations, covering the trail. Got as far as the ridge then turned back for safety. Still a fun experience and beautiful view even through the precipitation.

Exactly what we expected, easy hike. Our favorite parts were the lower river crossing and Cedar Swamp.

I've always found the hike a little boring up until the viewpoint. There are a lot of switchbacks and not a lot to see until the end. However, the view is definitely worth it! Be careful at the top!

beautiful hike with great views and lookouts. although very easy to lose the trail and get lost. don't recommend without a GPS if you are doing it for the first time.

Beautiful trail. I got there at 10:30am and there were lot of parking spots. It took 2 hour uphill and 1hr 15min down hill. I will be back in the summer, Great Lake and picnic area.
