Tough trail. Beautiful country, make sure you carry plenty of bug spray. The trail was tough to find at 3 different locations.

The trail isnt as bad as Donna makes it out of be. Its fairly rocky for the last few miles but it wasn't what I would call a boulder field. The mosquitoes were not bad until you get up to the lakes but once you get there, they were very thick. Bring bugspray! The fishing was great at Island Lake. Lots of small rainbow trout. I used a small castmaster on a spincaster. No luck on Kidney lake but I was trying in the middle of the day. Someone told me you had to get your lure out about 80 feet.

The trailhead with parking area is about 1/4 mile before the campground. It took us a little while to figure this out.

6/24/17 There was no snow on the trail.

That said, this trail is soul crushing. The skid steer tried to make the trail better and instead made it worse. The last 3 miles up to the lake was nothing but a massive boulder field that prohibits you from doing anything but slowly picking you way across it and trying to not fall, roll and ankle, and swear profusely.

All of that said the lake is GORGEOUS and totally worth the trip.

Difficult hike but worth it. The fishing was awesome! We only saw a couple people in 3 days.

Loved it.
I thought East Basin Pass would be more trouble than it was. On the (google) map it goes through a boulder field. Truth is the Pass is further to the east and routes up through some trees or down depending on direction of travel.
Clement's Pass is amazing with the pond at the top and huge alpine meadows. There is a short cut in Squaw Basis, check the National Geographic map of the High Uinta's for more info. This will shave a mile or so, more importantly it will save elevation loss/gain.
Don't for get the fishing gear. The East Basin lakes look lonely.
Please remember to keep Leave No Trace principles in mind and limit campfire use or keep 'em really small to preserve the solitude of the region

Best fishing! Grayling in Big Dog, Brook Trout and Cutthroat in Kidney and Island lakes. There is a road into Big Dog Lake, 4X4 only and is very rough. Didn't see any other hikers in 3 days on 1st trip, 2 horsemen on 2nd trip out. Heading out again this weekend, photos to come.
