A nice mix of sun and shade with lots of wildflowers and ridgeline views. Don't be fooled by the easy start... the incline gets much steeper once you turn the corner! The constant incline is met by gorgeous views along the way and at the lake. Don't forget bug spray!

Beautiful hike. We were a bit leery about heading out given all the bug reports. We came prepared with Repellent and while we used it, the bugs weren’t that bad. They were mostly at the very top and a bit worse on our way down. I’m glad we didn’t let them keep us away.

The trail is very rocky so I definitely recommend hiking boots. There is also quite a bit of water on the trail in places so plan accordingly with waterproof shoes.

We logged 5.6 miles on my Garmin vs. the 4.x listed on the trail summary. We stuck to the main trail so not sure where the discrepancy is coming from.

Enjoy the hike! Worth it.

First time ever doing this trail and I loved it. Did it today July 18th. Started at 6am and got back around 1. Went to the lake which was amazing. Got some good photos as the fog was going away. Then turned around and took the Bandera Mountain trail. Don’t know if I made it completely to the top but I had to climb three or four rock bolder areas. That was a little hard but worth it. I even took my dog even though some reviews on here and the Washington trail site said not to because of the rocky areas. But my dog had no issues except with some big rocks but I just helped her out. If you do this trail, try doing both and go early.

Beautiful trail! Old forest. Saw a black bear driving on the dirt road. The mosquitos were aggressive at the 2 mile mark and kept this up to the top, then disappeared. The little flies on top came in waves! Very little snow on the trail. A few running water flows lower but didn't even wet the boot. Tiger Lily growing on side of trail about 1.50 miles up. There is a washed-out section about 0.4 miles in which you can navigate easily. Trailhead potty out of TP. Moderate difficulty.

Great quick hike. Absolutely beautiful day and not too many hikers.
Up and down in 2:04.

Gorgeous trail. I do have a water shoe from someone who dropped it along the road up. If it is your, comment/message the brand and we'll get it back to you!

Bugs

Great hike and only a fraction of the people who go on the tollmie peak trail. We were at the trailhead at 10 o’clock Which required a .75 mile hike to the trail head.

Avalanche release the peak now

Love it beautiful views a little bit crowded but is worth the effort

Great hike! Few bugs. Moderate incline and lots of shade. Great views of Mt Rainier. Nice lake to play in. I’d give it 4.5 stars. Snow Lake is actually prettier. Toilets at the trailhead :)

Spectacular view of the lake and a nice workout. 1hr 45 min up to overlook (3+mi) and 1hr 20 min down. Lots of bugs. I wore bug spray and still got a couple of bites. I didn’t see a bathroom. Will definitely go again and head down to the lake next time.

Great hike as always!!! A lot of bugs this time , don’t stop or you will get bit. 7/17/18

Hiked this yesterday. Lots of stuff blooming now. Switchbacks are hard work if you're not regularly hiking.

Summer 2017.
Headed up after lunch on a week day to avoid the crowds. Solid hike and great lake. The biting flies were awful though and no amount of bug spray could keep them away for long.

Nice walk through the woods. Could see the distant peaks today along with Glacier peak, Vesper, and Barring

Unbelievable views! We went early and didn’t run into too many people. I really didn’t think the snow was too terrible to cross over but the bugs were insane! Definitely will be prepared for those next time. I didn’t bring my dog and glad about that. The rocks at the top are not dog friendly :)

Great hike as always! Would have enjoyed it more if less people were there.

I went here this morning @7:30am and took about 5 hours to get done hiking lol I'm out of shape that's why it took a long time, but it was worth it to be done! I saw very beautiful views and nature!! Highly recommended to see mason lake! btw please go early in the morning so you don't park the alley in the road. And you will need a northwest pass for sure. :)

Hiked Friday 13th. We foolishly left our video camera and tripod at the trailhead with all of our family vacation videos on it. We were able to do the entire loop starting clockwise with just hiking boots. Had to be careful along a few snow fields but it was truly amazing. I’m 47 and not in the best shape... it took us 5 hours with lunch at the summit. The husband and teen daughters had to wait for me slowly walking uphill but I did fine on the downhill. It was the best family hike ever, except for losing our prized footage on the camera. Please email me if you found it.... we would be so appreciative. We didn’t realize it was gone until we reached Mr Ranier NP today. :0( Wendyteach@yahoo.com

Nice hike! The rocks on the switchback can be kind of difficult to maneuver if you’re not wearing boots. Lots of people were wearing tennis shoes but I wouldn’t recommend it - especially since there’s still snow on the trail to the lake that’s pretty slippery. Come early to beat the crowds.

Hiked 7/918 with three other gals!
Drove for a little over a mile on a fairly "gravelly" path and arrived around 1:40 PM then had to get a day permit/pass for $5.00. There are a fair amount of switchbacks and can be jaggedy, which I like. There are two old bridges above the streams with reconstruction at the trail at 3/4 of the trail. Then Arrived at Talapa lake at 2:40 with a lot of breaks and photos ♡ I can easily say an enjoyable hike for beginners who want to push themselves with the elevation.

Definitely a good amount of snow still on the trail (7/14), makes going down pretty slippery. Hard but great! For me, 1:40 up, 1:40 down. Go early because it got busy quick. And bring bug spray.

We did this hike after Denny Creek Trail and when comparing the 2 trails, made this one feel so much easier. It took 1.5 hours to the top and decided not to do the hike down to the lake - it was pretty snowy/muddy and we didn't have the right hiking shoes on. It probably would've taken another hour out and back to lake if we wanted to go. The peak of this trail provides amazing views of Snow Lake

This hike was gorgeous! Multiple types of terrain the whole way up. You hit snow around the mile marker- it is slightly slushy, so if you aren’t stable on your feet, I recommend trekking poles. I did without and was careful, all went well. There is quite a bit of bouldering, mainly towards the top of the hike. But boy are the views worth it! Loved that the fire look out had maps of what you could see from the distance. Note to all wanting to do this hike- bring bug spray! I reapplied 2 times because bugs were so bad.

Very pretty home, forest pass required.
The snow on the lake is starting to melt.

wildflower still not blooming, trail great shape, snow in the upper meadows should be perfect in a month or so

Couldn’t ask for a better day. Gorgeous views and a moderate challenge. Not too crowded. Move fast to avoid the flies. Road up could use some tlc but nothing a little tactical swerving can’t get around. Dog loved the snow

Today (7/12/18) I completed the loop going clockwise. It was a totally spectacular hike! I first encountered snow on the trail roughly 1.8 miles from the trailhead. Once I reached the ridge there were more and much larger snowfields. I brought crampons with me, but I never needed them. My poles were enough to help provide stability (with careful footing). The views were some of the best I’ve ever experienced and will definitely go on this hike again when I am in the area.

Round trip is 8 miles. Once the switchbacks are completed the up hike is pretty simple, so take your time on the switchbacks. For me who is moderately fit, it took 2hours up and hour fifteen minutes on the way down. Carry good amount of water and a nice snack to enjoy near the lake.
