Good, tough hike. Snow gets slippery!

Great day out met plenty of good people on the way could not get to the top as the snow from the last saddle to the peak was icy so ice axe and crampons would be needed, will certainly go back to bag it either with the correct gear or in easier conditions

Hiked on 1/19/2019. Ice and snow covered starting from about a mile in from the trail head. Deep snow covered the trail to Cucamonga peak, and we feel unsafe going on a slope covered with deep snow without ax and snow shoes so we decided to turn back. But it was an awesome day to enjoy the snow.

By far my absolute favorite approach to Mount San Antonio. I done the whole trail to Mt Baldy twice, started once from Guffy Campground and also from the actual trailhead which starts at an elevation of 8,300 feet the (highest trailhead entry in the whole San Gabriel Mountains) This trail is an epic adventure that straddles up and down a narrow ridge across 3 of the highest peaks in the SGM’s. The trek starts up a rough trail up Pine Mt (elevation 9,650 ft) this is probably the sketchiest part of the entire trail as there are 3 small class 2/3 sections while approaching Pine. After Pine Mt, the trail drops approx 500 feet to the Pine/Dawson saddle, after saddle trail gradually goes up another 400 ish feet to Dawson (this is by far the easiest portion of the hike) the trail doesn’t exactly head directly to the summit of Dawson, be on the lookout for a small used trail to your left, usually marked by two tiny cairns. After Dawson, the trail drops dramatically to the Dawson/Baldy saddle, at this point you will lose about 750 feet in 0.75ish miles. At the saddle between Dawson/Baldy (this is def the crux of the hike) Mt Baldy will be looming in front of you which such authority, not going to lie Baldy at this point looks kinda intimidating. From saddle hike up Mt Baldy, you will be gaining approx 1,300 feet in 0.6 of a mile. Although the stats seems like death at this section of the trail, I psyche myself out and before i knew it, i was at the summit of Mount San Antonio. Bare in mind coming back you will gain another 1,400 or so feet which at this point you’re probably exhausted. Overall amazing trail that genuinely makes you feel you’re out in the Sierras Nevadas and gives you an incredible feeling of accomplishment, don’t think a trail can get anymore remote and gorgeous in LA/SB county.

Must do at least once. I've done it 2.9 times (don't chicken if you are like me, because you'll be back again to finish what you started) and it is indescribable. This last time, in August 2018, I spent the rest of our time in the Valley pointing to the top and telling my husband, "Hey, we were up there on Tuesday morning!!".

First two times, we started at 4 AM and made it up to the cables after 10 AM. There was a lot of traffic, and for this acrophobe, it just made things worse. However, once you summit the sub dome, the cables look IMPOSSIBLE. Get right up to them and you'll see it isn't as straight up as you think. I think having carabiners to clip yourself in just to ease your mind a bit is a great idea, though I've done it without each time. A couple tricky spots, but if you keep things one plank at a time, you'll get there.

In August, my husband and I started at 12 AM. Once we got to the mist trail, I realized we left our gloves in the car (get decent work gloves from Home Depot or somewhere similar as they will work WONDERFULLY for the cables; you need the grip). Had to trek back so we finally started before 1 AM. Hiking in the dark was rough. Took the mist trail up as usual. We reached the pre-dome at sunrise and made it to the top at about 7:30. Absolutely gorgeous. Cables will likely exhaust you, so get ready for a long trip down. We got back to the parking lot (took the mist trail down, though I would recommend the Muir trail down if your knees are in agony; I just wanted my husband to see the falls) at about 1 PM, so it took 12 hours in all, which was the same as the previous trips. Slept for a looooong time after that.

Beautiful trail. First snow hike. Trekking poles are a must, if I didnt have them I would have probably slipped down the mountain. I got here earlier today at 8am and I was one of the first ones here, it was pretty empty. Keep in mind it's a weekday. It is pretty tough if you haven't hiked in a while, I contemplated giving up multiple times. The trail to the peak at some point was hidden in snow and I felt that it was best if I didnt continue, plus my crampons broke. I'll be sure to finish this trail in the summer.

The front gate is closed, so just walk around it.

I completed this hike on 1/7/18. The extra walk made this an over 21 mile hike. We got to the summit at sunset and descended in the dark with headlamps. From the parking to the trailhead is about 3.5 miles of steep incline on asphalt, don’t let that ruin your day #OptOutside.

This trail is very well maintained. We saw deer, salamanders, and a mountain lion.

The second half of the loop had a few fallen down trees so just expect to hop over them. The wildlife is extra wild from the closure, so be prepared to see some animals and to know what to do when you come face to face.

Be aware of the change of temperature from the trailhead to the summit. There is snow on the summit.

We saw no other people up there so be careful and bring a buddy Incase of emergency. Have a plan.

The vertical climb gets pretty intense towards the end after Sturtavent Camp, especially with how bad that first 3.5 miles blows your legs out, but we did it, so you can do it. You got this!

My buddy’s Garmin GPS clocked us at 21.35 total miles and 5,482 feet in elevation gain for the day.

This was my first hike at this location and hiking in the snow. Great workout...crampons and trekking poles helped. Completed in 9 hours. Since it was supposed to rain later that day it was super windy and began snowing on the way back down. Hiking in the snow was awesome and the scenery was beautiful. Can’t wait to do this one again in better weather conditions to be able to absorb more of the scenery.

Loved this hike! We split this up into two days so we could camp in little Yosemite valley.

absolutely amazing. micro spikes were a must. hiking poles are extremely helpful, i don't summit without them!

started at 8:30. got to the top by 1. ate lunch for about an hour. got back down by 5. next time I will start an hour early because the sun had set by the time we got back to the parking lot.

this hike can be dangerous for those who don't come prepared. we ran into someone who slid 100 feet because they were in Nikes and no micro spikes. luckily they weren't alone. not sure what the current conditions are, i would call the ranger station a day in advance to make sure.

anyways, had a total blast doing this. i definitely recommend getting some miles in before doing this one because it is mighty strenuous. can't wait to train properly and do it again!

Hiked to the peak without micro-spikes, worst mistake ive ever made. Almost fell off a slope but thanks to someone near by helped me up, very dangerous without spikes at the moment.

Such an awesome hike! Definitely recommend! Make sure that you bring gloves that can grip the cables if you plan on going to the summit!

Great snow hike up Vincent gap trail on 12/29/2018. cold at the mids twenties with gusty winds all along the trail/ at the summit it gets worse :) one mile in the trail its cover with ice and micro spikes /trekking poles are highly recommended. toward the last 1.5M part of the trail gets lost due to the gusty winds blowing snow and covering existent footprints. Overall a beautiful hike up to the summit/perfect time to catch some morning sun therapy as we started at 6:30AM. Happy trails / full album at facebook/bleedingumz photography or IG : bp_trailheads

12/28/18 — Whoa. The winds were wicked. Micro spikes needed from around 3.5 miles in until the peak. Snow was over the ankles in places near the top. Had the peak to myself.

Hiked this trail on 12/27/18.

The first 3.6 miles from the trailhead to Ice House Saddle were mostly dry with scattered patches of snow and ice along the way. The next 2.5 miles from Ice House Saddle to Cucamonga Peak were almost completely covered with snow and ice...you will definitely want micro-spikes and trekking poles from this point to make your way to the top if hiking in snowy conditions. We did the hike in 9 hours (7am-4pm) taking our time and making several stops along the way, but we probably could have done it in 7 hours or less if we were hustling a bit more.

Overall, it’s a beautiful trail that can be considered moderate to challenging depending upon your experience and fit. There’s a tranquil creek that runs parallel to the trail for the first couple miles and once you climb higher you’ll be awarded with stunning views of the valley. It’s a well maintained trail from bottom to top. Do it, you won’t be disappointed!

Hiked to top. Lots of ice so wear spikes and bring poles!

Good hike. Was iced over before the saddle, so I decided to turn back & stay the night at Cedar Glen camp since it was later in the day. Had a great view from the top spot at the camp.

I just hiked this on 9th December 2018. Lots of spaces in the lot, I arrived at 6:15 am. Beautiful hike! Definitely harder in knee deep snow past the saddle. Micro spikes and trekking poles were very helpful as some parts were ice. Beautiful view! It took about 4.5 hours up! Check out my insta pics of it! ig: @yvonne_rebecca

Great hike. Lots of snow. Make sure you at least have micro spikes as the snow turns into ice. We did not come down the DBB as few hikers warned us about it. We came down thru the ice house the same way we went up.

Scariest hike ever. I'm talking about the cable portion, it is steep as hell and even steeper than photos when you see it in person. But it is do-able you just have to focus on moving to the next wooden board. The wooden boards I believe are spaced out 10 feet from each other from the bottom of the dome to the top. It took us about an hour just to get to the top because there was traffic lots of people going up and down simultaneously. We had to take turns for those coming down and those going up. To get to the top without traffic should only take maybe 10-15 mins to give perspective on what traffic does. Also the traffic IMO makes it more scary because you have to hold onto the cables even longer.

I'd recommend using gloves with a latex coating to help with the cables as it gives your hands much more grip and you'll avoid blistering your hands like many other people.

I'd recommend doing it if you want to face your fears. Just take it one wooden board at a time until you reach the top and you'll be fine. Lots of people did it and have done it.

Would I do it again? Probably not lol just because it was scary as shit. BUT DO IT ONCE AT LEAST :D

GOOD view! Warning: There is snow very, very early into the trail; trekking poles or a good set of spikes for traction. I did not prepare for the snow and went in tights and a t-shirt. There wasn't a lot of people; I arrived at 7:00 am and the parking lot was still half empty. Took almost 5 hours to complete the entire thing.

Highly recommend for beginners who have a few easy mountains under their belt.

Parked and departed 1 Dec 2018 Saturday 8am at Chantry Flats. Have annual Adventure Pass for $29 from REI that provides access to all southern Ca National Parks.

Went counter clockwise. Trails well maintained. Creek and Sturtevant Falls flowing due to rain 2 days ago and trails not muddy. 90% shaded from beautiful canopy of Bay Laurels, Oaks, pine trees. Hot bowl of chili and coffee at Cosmic Cafe (now closed for season) at Mt Wilson half way point . Entire hike on beautiful trails . Beer garden at bottom end of hike at “Adams Packing Station” great way to celebrate accomplishment.

What a hike!! Got to the trail at 6:30 on Sat Dec 1st, parking lot less then a 1/4 full... No snow the first 1/4 way up, after that the trail is full of ice and snow, sometimes as much as a couple feet deep as your getting closer to the top... My $30 micro spikes made a huge difference. I saw people turn around, but I also saw people make it just wearing hiking shoes... Summer is gone, it’s winter up there now, and only going to get more snow and colder, be prepared.. Bring your layers, head gear, hiking poles, gloves, a good pair of winter hiking boots, and definitely your spikes.. Check the weather before you go, it can change quickly and turn a great day into a dangerous one.. Plan extra

To get dark... It took me 9 hours to complete, I am an older guy but in shape, I’m sure you youngsters can do it faster, just bring your winter gear to be prepared.. Overall what a great day, the snow, the clean air, doesn’t get much better...

Did this hike to Cucamonga Peak 2-weekends in a row. The first time 11/18. Started at 8am. Lots of people en route to the saddle. Reached the saddle at 10am. And the peak was reached at 1230pm. On the way down the sunset beat us and we walked the last mile in darkness. Reached the car at 5:30pm. Yesterday 11/24. Larger group, 4adults/3middle schoolers and a slower pace. Started at 8am. Lots of people headed up the icehouse canyon. Reached the saddle at 11am. Had some hot chocolate (it was cold) started towards cucamonga peak around 12. Slowly but surely (take your time, and focus on getting there, not how much longer to get there) reached the peak around 3:45pm. Ate some cup-o-noodles (it was really cold and windy, the warm noodles hit the spot) gradually descended at 4:45 but sunset came by too fast and we literally hiked down the peak in darkness. We had headlamps and flashlights. Again, the descent can take a toll on your legs, good leg condition because the hike up to the peak at the last quarter will challenge your legs, and on the way down the last 2miles are full of rocks so by this point your legs will feel wobbly and weak. Although proper hiking boots will make a huge difference in this hike. Your feet will thank you and so will your knees and ankles. We made it to the car at 9:40pm. Hahahah. I loved it. Worth it. Feel the burn. And get some rest. On to the next.

Amazing hike did this back in September and forgot to put a review, but this hike is beautiful! We left early in the morning at 2am and it was perfect going up in the dark with headlamps and enjoying seeing things from a different perspective rather than going later like 7am so heading down you see everything that you didn’t going up so it makes the hike better since it’s pretty much a 10hr hike. Going up early at 2am and not knowing much farther you have to go was just great, but to just keep moving and the hike went by quick because by the time daylight started to show we were at the base of sub dome. Heading down was quick n easy, but by 10am traffic rolls in and makes it difficult.

Leave early for the hike to make the cables with little to no traffic. Make it before 8am cause up top people start to roll in and head down the cables with traffic is a pain to wait for people to pass n continue to descend.

The hike in general starts pretty easy for those that hike normally. The hike gets tough when you hit the foot high steps n they continue to get higher n higher, but that’s why you start early n you don’t see how much farther you have to go. Sub dome is just the same a bunch of foot high steps, but aren’t to bad if you go early and rest at the steps. Cables were surprisingly easy both up and down. Down is easiest, but going up isn’t bad if you have RUBBER GLOVES. Crazy beautiful site seeing going up cables and top. Used my GoPro and the videos are awesome.

Pack some good food and 4L of water. I managed to make it with 3L and have some left over,but it’s probably because we left early in morning.

Go prepared (food&water), go early, proper gear (boots&gloves, don’t forget permit, and enjoy the views going down.
