on Royal Arch Trail

trail running

On a beautiful Sunday, it was relatively calm and I had the trail to myself for large portions of the trip although traffic increased toward late morning. Packed snow after the final creek crossing and used traction for most of the ascent. Removed for the downclimbing rock scramble 'cause the rocks were clear then put them back on for the last portion to the Arch. Repeated on the descent.

The trail was great yesterday! Partly snow covered but not difficult to manage at all. Views are killer. Wasn’t too busy either.

Today the view was spectacular. The trail to the summit was 1/2 dry and 1/2 covered with a light dusting of dry snow that was crunchy but not sloppy or icy at all. The snow was less than 1/2” deep.

Too many tourist.

Amazing. Any photo can prove his magnificense.

Awesome hike!

excellent trail. nice quick easy hike

This was amazing! It is $50 per person but totally worth the views. The tour guide is extremely helpful with taking pictures as well! A must see!!

Nice hike, aptly named. Very easy at first with only substantial elevation gain before the top. A bit of snow and ice for the first third of a mile, but didn't need any traction. Definitely a nice little hike

Beautiful scenery! Very short walk small hill at the beginning. Took less than an hour to walk there take pictures and walk back.

Most exhilarating hike ever!

Did this hike 11/30/18, started around 10 am. Was beautiful. Spikes and poles were helpful to about St Mary lake. Went a little further but snowshoes definitely are recommended for heading up any further. I will definitely be back with my snowshoes!

Hiked 12/3. The hike from bear lake to dream lake is our favorite in the park, regardless of the season. Today was no exception. We took snowshoes with and used them the whole time. The hike from the parking lot to dream lake could be easily done with micro spikes. From there to lake Haiyaha will require snowshoes in its current state. Less traffic on this trail and recent snow makes it loose, narrow and uneven in a lot of places. You’ll have to stay tight and inside in a lot of places to keep from sinking a falling down the ridge.

With caution, it’s very doable. We are not super experienced in snowy mountains and managed just fine. It’s worth the trip.

Very short hike in. Visited in the off season, and went for the sunset. It was still very busy, so get there well in advance. Take a blanket so you can sit along the edge and hang out.

For those of you who do not know, Tours must be booked to do this! Would recommend going in the summer and when the sun is in the middle of the sky, I went in the fall and the light rays were not as great (as told by our guide). Very busy, but worth seeing.

Once you have the pamphlet the trail is very easy to find. Recommend doing this hike for sunset, it was beautiful and not a very large crowd. Will need some flashlights for the route back as it can be easy to lose the trail.

Absolutely beautiful hike. I went early Friday morning and had the trail / glacier all to myself. I was glad I had my spikes and hiking poles. I was able to get quite a ways up the glacier. Snowshoes would have been helpful toward the top.

My husband and I did this hike yesterday afternoon. We were surprised to see only two other cars at the trailhead when we arrived a around 12:30pm. We saw two hikers on the way to the lake and then had lake/waterfall to ourselves. I thought for sure it would be crowded and was happy to be wrong. The trail was snow packed. Visually, it looked like a winter-wonderland. The trees were lightly dusted in snow. We both had our yaktraks on and I was thankful for them multiple times throughout the hike. Definitely some slippery spots, especially on the way back down.

Beautiful. Trail is packed down at this time. Microspikes are helpful but probably safe without them. Beautiful.

Icy in spots but clear path overall; wore traction going down. Beautiful trail

Great moderate hike. Not much snow today. took about 2 hours including a break at the top and I had a baby on my back. A great view once you get to the top and some nice aspens along the way....somebody even left a pre-rolled out there.

Only saw a few people in the distance on this one. not much traffic on Friday at 1pm.

*bonus*

Loved this hike! If you can climb a ladder, this is DEFINITELY worth it to check out. Way less crowded than the NPs, and gorgeous views all around.

Wow. Wow. Wow. We hiked on 12/1 and there was 2-3' of snow the entire length of the trail. There was a small 2' wide compacted path the entire route so it was nice and easy to follow the path in regular waterproof hiking boots. Saw plenty of hikers with snow shoes and plenty without. It was fine without. The views on this hike are absolutely insane. Honestly the waterfall was great, but frozen over, but the valley and mountain views are top notch. We are here on vacation from Florida and have so far done 3 hikes (Adam's Canyon and Waterfall Canyon near Ogden) and this was our favorite of the three. Unbelievable.

Once again a great hike with absolutely beautiful destinations! Sadly there seem to be more people not taking their trash and other items out with them. Some people left behind an air mattress, shoes, dirty clothes, bottles, cans and other trash. if you hike it in, hike it out or don’t bother going. It is a disgrace that some humans ruin things for others. I would agree that if you were going to have your belongings packed into the canyon for you that you should use the helicopter. There are still several horses and mules along the route that had bleeding saddle sores and other injuries. That stuff aside, it’s a place worth checking out if you are lucky enough to get a permit.

This was the most fun I have ever had. climbing down a cave then realizing I have to climb down using chains and then there's a huge ladder thats wet from the mist of the most beautiful waterfall. I faced my fear of heights. then we take the trail and get to take off our shoes and socks and make our way across the water not once but 3 times on this hike (and 3 times on the way back) when it seemed to never end we got to those final ladders to get up top above Beaver Falls and that feeling you get is just so worth the hike. Amazing view. Amazing feels.
Not ok for kids, adults only

Beautiful hike! Easy! Great views!!!

Oct 6 2018- we started at about 650 am. Parking was fine. It was a short easy hike with lots of other people. Beautiful scenery and views of horseshoe bend. We were done in a little under an hour, with time for lots of pictures.

Completed Black Lake 11/28. Traction was nice to Mills, not necessary. Flotation was necessary after Mills. Trail was not difficult to follow despite being faint from wind. Last .7m added a few tricky spots weaving through the creek. Not enough snow pack in some spots to keep from post holing, avoidable with attention. Skis would have been great.

beautiful hike, way too crowded though. Very easy, and paved. Watch out for the squirrels. They make it impossible to stop for a snack :-)

My husband and baby went snowshoeing here today; it's a long-shot, but he lost his car keys. Old beat up key for a Scion tC, safety pin, house key, and a silver metal flash drive. If anyone happens out there tomorrow and sees them, please let me know! RhiannonDean07 @ gmail
