Absolutely amazing in the snow! The trail to Mills Lake is very well marked, and it took us around 1.25 hours to get to Mills. The lake is frozen and fun to walk around on and is just stunning. Would definitely recommend! We did not go further than Mills Lake.

Gorgeous any time of year ! I have done this hike in the summer and winter . Petingell peak beyond Herman lake is a great hike also ! Not much trail past the lake . I snowshoed this hike today . Definitely a packed trail until the second clearing , beyond that we ditched the microspikes and put on snow shoes . There is a pretty good trench however, it gets off trail and actually takes you to the end of the gulch below Citadel peak rather than to the lake. Take a GPS if you want to get to the lake ! Lots of snow. Beautiful hike !

Beautiful hike! Snowing the day I did it, microspikes came in handy.

amazing hiking, even in the winter!

11/16/18 - packed snow/ice all the way up to the lakes. Carried snowshoes but didn’t use them, only used microspikes but could’ve been done without. Very few people past TH, nothing spectacular until the views above treeline. Damn kids doing there vaping stuff around Echo Lake, hopefully the fruity chemical flavors they crave will end up killing them sooner than later so when we go out to get fresh air, we can breathe it instead of breathing their second hand vape smoke!!!

Today the trail was packed, didn't need snowshoes until that last 1/2 mile after turnoff for Lost Lake. Most of the hike was shielded from wind before getting to the lake. Super gusty today so not a fun afternoon to linger at Lost lake, but saw a few pretty views while there. It's a fun and easy to moderate level snowshoe trail.

Loved this hike! We went 11/12 and it was super snowy! A lot of people had snow shoes but our spikes worked just fine. Saw 3 large moose on the trail! You have to hike about a mile from your car to the trail head, so factor that in! Also, there was a frozen stream you could hike, however with our spikes it was a little sketchy. If you don’t want to hike the stream there is a trail to the right of the stream that goes through the woods in order to get you to the trailhead.

Hiked up to the lake today...only needed hiking boots with microspikes and gators..upper 3/4 of trail snow covered...mostly packed trail and hiking thru 2-6" of fresh snow on top...a little postholing when reached the lake.. big time wind..be sure to bring layers and maybe a stove and something to warm up with... Part of beach blown free of snow. No other people encountered. Glorious. Approx 5 hours RT.

Incredible trail! The snow makes the trek a little difficult but the views are beyond rewarding! Went last weekend and left feeling changed. Hop over to @2_Summit_Up on Instagram to see great pictures of what you can expect to see on this trail

Great trail so close to Denver. Hiked a week ago and got into some snow near first lake. Can't wait to go back next summer or when I get some snow shoes!

This is borderline easy-moderate. The majority of the trail was snow and ice covered on 11/10/2018. We had microspikes and didn't have any issues. Would definitely recommend microspikes or snow shoes in the near future as winter starts moving in. The streams are partially frozen but you can still see some water flow - makes for some neat ice formations! The lakes and ponds are all frozen but still very pretty

This was a beautiful hike that had a ton of snow today. It was a gorgeous day out and I cannot wait to do this hike again. Heads up, the road to the trailhead was snowed in and we had to walk the rest of the way.

Beautiful trail but as previous reviewer mentioned, at some point near the end, the foot path in the snow deviates from the actual trail. I had a GPS with me so was able to figure this out (coupled with clues based on the trail just not seeming right). We never actually made it to the lakes but the hike was still beautiful. I would say if you don’t have a GPS, be careful as just following the footprints in the snow isn’t actually the trail & gets a bit sketchy.

We did it about a month ago! One of my favorites! Loved the colorful fall trees! Definitely a "MUST do" in fall.

Mills Lake is beautiful! Wanted to head as far as Black Lake but it was getting dark and the snow was high af, not really a visible trail once you reach the sign a ways after Mills Lake.

This is a really great day hike if you live nearby and are off to a late start for the day. We came from neighboring Longmont and started the hike around 3. Got back to the car right after the sun went down. The creek is beautiful and it's really cool to see some local infrastructure at work. I highly recommend this hike.

Beautiful short hike although it does get crowded. Everything was frozen over and we walked across the lake. You can get some beautiful photos up here! Hiked in November and microspikes were definitely helpful.

Trail is all snow, most packed by skiers. Final ~1/4 mile to the lower lake is unpacked snow (unless we took a wrong turn, we were definitely off trail on deep snow following footprints).Great hike but with the current conditions if you don’t have snowshoes or skis you won’t make it all the way up.

Beautiful views and great hike. Was debating whether it’d be a hike or a snowshoe. I brought my snowshoes and am glad I did. Starts hard pack and hikable but turns to postholing after a mile or so. Trail disappeared so I broke the last half mile using my GPS for guidance. Poles came in handy. So easy to get to from Denver.

great hike! be sure to wear layers as it is extremely windy at the top by the lake. few patches of ice

This trail is temporarily closed because of the Seaman Fire. It is scheduled to reopen 10/12/18. For more info, Google its special order number: arp-clrd-2018-09.

Plenty of snow already! The first mile or so of trail is pretty packed and easily hiked without spikes. But you’ll need snowshoes after that (unless you enjoy battling knee high snow). The trail was barely visible after two miles, but managed to sleuth it to the junction. Be safe out there!

Went Sunday and it was 45 degrees or so out and sunny. Made it to the top no issues, trail does get a little "confusing" with no trail markers towards the top, though nothing too crazy. Views are great. Saw a few other hikers, other wise good area for those seeking solitude on near by trails.

Simply beautiful, and plenty of fresh powder!! There were folks doing this hike with microspikes but snowshoes really came in handy as the powder was knee deep halfway into the hike and above treeline.

I love this hike, I have done it in a variety of seasons. There is a beautiful waterfall during the spring run off. Make sure you walk around the lake and look back towards the trail when you get there for the best views. Lots of snow on the trail today !! Knee deep drifts in spots the last half mile to the lake . Only used spikes today , no snow shoes although they would have been handy in a few places. We blazed the trail, should be a decent trench until the next big dump ! Also we had to park on the road near the intersection for the Fourth of July TH . I don’t recommend driving any further down the road unless you have some serious clearance.

We broke the trail and encountered 4 other parties coming up as we were going down so the trail should be decently worn in now. Traction devices might be helpful -- as would snowshoes in the last mile or so, however we did the whole trail with boots and gaiters, which kept our pants nice and dry.

The snow made the hike more challenging, but nice nonetheless.

Good trail for all age groups. However, it’s a bit rocky but that should be fine. Took us 2-2.5 hours from car to car including breaks. The views at the top are pretty good and picturesque. Would highly recommend during fall season.
