This is an easy trail with a big and beautiful payoff! So worth the short hike. The views are breathtaking! Just watch out for of the ground is covered in ice in the winter.

This incline will test your cardio! I moved here a week ago from Florida and the elevation was ruthless for me. Made it to the top in 50 minutes and the view was immaculate. I highly recommend spikes for your boots this time of year, it was slippery at certain points on the stairs up and the same in the trail down. 10/10 would hike again.

Attempted this trail 3 weeks ago and the snow was too much. Hip deep at points and the trail is covered. We made it to the top of the first rock scramble and turned back. Will complete this trail in the spring once the snow melts.

Snow and ice on the incline, but still very doable. I would've liked my yaktraks on the way down the Barr trail. It took me 1 hr 26 minutes to make it to the top and less than an hour down the Barr trail. I've been in Colorado for about a month - the altitude was the biggest challenge.

Super doke lake, one of the most beautiful someone I meet on the trail said. Once I arrived I was in agreement with him on several accounts.

super great trail! Would definitely recommend snow shoes or at least spikes on your boots though. I just had my yaks on and I sunk a couple times but overall gorgeous hike especially with snow and I will be going back.

WHAT A WORKOUT!!! Per the placard: 2768 steps, 2K elevation gain and .88 miles.

I am definitely out of shape and completed this in 53 minutes including a plethora of of water and quick bite breaks; after the 1800 mark I did a break every 200 steps until the 2500 mark.

There was some snow and a bit of ice on the left hand side of the stair (while going up) but nothing that made for trouble with just my vans outdoor shoes.

I hiked this on 11/2/18 starting out at 10:30 and made it to the top in about one hour. I am an avid hiker and have hiked several 14ers here in CO. This hike was definitely an ass kicker even for someone that works out almost daily! Take plenty of water and be prepared for snow and ice this time of year. It’s really slippery and muddy heading down!

great hike but none of the trails are marked. If you want to stay on the trail you'll need to walk with your phone in your hand and this app open. Not my idea of a good hike

went in the snow early November and it was so so so cool to see the Loch like it was. super worth the hike but be careful! trail was pretty icy at some parts

This trail was fantastic but we went the day after it snowed and as the steps narrowed and got higher in between each step, the ice was thicker. It was still amazing but would absolutely think twice about hiking when icy.

Nice hike. You can take the scenic route which winds around the mountain, or take a more direct route if you just want to scramble to the top. I went on a day after a 5-inch snow; while the snow was mostly gone, the trail consisted of slick mud. Lots of slipping and sliding around and carried a couple of extra pounds of mud on my boots for the duration. A little shocking to round a switchback while ascending and suddenly there are multi-million dollar houses overlooking the trail. I'm sure it's a spectacular view for them; kind of ruins it for the rest of us. The payoff is getting to the top; you can stand on top of the tallest rock spire that you can see from the interstate. I went on a cool Wednesday afternoon and had the place to myself, but I noticed that the parking lot was small and I guess would only hold a dozen or so vehicles.

It is a great hike. Can't wait to do it again on the next trip out.

Very hard on the way up. Not sure if I’d suggest running down the trail. It’s fairly steep at some points.

Hiked to Loch Lake yesterday. We were on the trail at 7:30am. We like to get up early to beat the crowds and always get a great parking space. The trail was great, only icy in spots. So I definitely recommend bringing your traction devices. You will need them. It was cold and very windy at the lake. It is about 2/3 iced over but still very thin. Dress in layers.

Phenomenal. Parking is the only drawback.

Great hike! I will be back for the incline and continue to pikes peak and back.

Nice easy trail

Called RMNP ahead of time, and they suggested yak traks and poles. We had yak traks, and we were definitely happy we had them. Many spots (esp the ones w/ inclines) had packed snow/ice coverage, but some spots exposed to sun were just fine. Didn't need poles. Fantastic hike! Lake is frozen over. On a clear day, the variety of views on this hike always make this a great one!

Parking: we showed up at 8am and there were maybe 20 spots left. By the time we finished the hike at lunch time, people were waiting for spots. The shuttle is NOT running this time of year, so get there early to ensure a spot!!

trails are not marked at all. beautiful scenery at the top. there were quite a bit of cars in the parking lot when we got there & left and we noticed in two separate sections, broken glass from a car window...we're thinking people breaking into cars? wouldn't be surprised after my husbands tires were stolen off his car at a different place nearby. also a sign in parking lot says to secure valuables so...be careful what you have in your car.

Great hike, great workout. View at the top is worth it. Took our group around an hour to get to the top of the stairs and another hour and twenty minutes to hike back down Barr trail.

Fun hike my only warning is most of the trail is icy so crampons, microspikes, etc would really be beneficial. If you don’t have them it might add to the hike time.. wanted to continue on to Andrews glacier but without proper equipment it left me wondering for another day.

Trail is boot-packed snow and ice the entire way, so yaktrax were helpful. Helene and Odessa were both frozen over, but still well worth the views. Trail earns its moderate rating as you ascend back up to Helene after Odessa (I can see why people one-way this trail and include Fern Lake). This is definitely a less trafficked trail out of the Bear Lake area—didn’t see a soul for over two hours with a sunrise start.

best starter hike in colorado

Absolutely beautiful lake and hike! make sure you go when the weather is clear so you can see the amazing views.

Absolutely stunning end view! A great place to have a little bite to eat and head back down!

Stunning views. It's rated moderate, and had it not been for the snow and ice, it might have been. Us noob hikers didn't anticipate the conditions well (it had snowed lightly a few days prior), and it was difficult. With that said, it was worth the effort and we were afforded a view that you wouldn't get during the summer. Would love to do it again sans snow.

Easy hike with a great reward.
