Strenuous backpacking trip that was well worth the amazing scenery. Definitely pick as light as possible and consider caching food to save weight. I did the entire loop with about 60 pounds on my back which I really felt on the sharp inclines and declines. Bugs weren't too bad except for the miles around Devils Dream. Obtaining a walk-in permit was surprisingly easy if you're flexible in your plans. I did it in 9 days which seemed just right. Get out and check this off your bucket list!

Hiked to Mystic lake via Carbon glacier via Moraine park from the Carbon river trail head.
This hike is about 31 miles. Only about 5k ft of elevation climbing, but mostly on the 2nd half of the outward hike.

Some amazing views, even with all the clouds. You get to see a lot of marmots on the meadows, tiny toads no bigger than your thumb nail, frogs, bats, birds. A lot of different types of wildlife.

Crossing the Carbon river on the log bridge, with the fast moving water flowing beneath you is amazing I feel. Crossing it coming back in the pitch black darkness just with a head light, I felt slightly different, I was sure to keep a steady footing.

A very long day for me, I'm not the fastest hiker but I can go for a long time.

What a day. The best.

Good hike for all. It’s a little steep, but not too bad. Brought my 13 year old nephew and 18 year old daughter. Both had no problem. A little smokey. Bugs are around so bring bug spray.

BTW. Whoever left cigarette butts on the trail should apologize. I removed them for you.

Trail was beautiful today. I highly recommend this trail. Easy hike and the wildflowers were everywhere. Make sure to hike to crystal lakes after going through sourdough gap

Did this today for the second time in a month, took a friend today. Wildflowers were plentiful both times. Saw a hummingbird! Moderately busy, people swimming in Sheep lake and camping. No mosquitoes! A few flies is all. Parts are very hot now. Not rated a 5 due to the long slog that follows the road, albeit well above, at the beginning and thus the end. Get there early in the day for parking and fewer people.

Amazing Views!! You really need do this on clear day, cause you can see all four Mountains...
It's a must do if you love hiking, but it's good climb...

Easy trail to navigate. Bring bug repellent! The views from the top are world class. Pay close attention to the weather, I imagine clouds would kill the view if you head up on the wrong day. The drive to the trailhead is easy. Anyone terrified of heights should be hesitant. Caution at the top is a must, the lookout is literally at the edge of a cliff.

I loved this hike! So many bridges. We did this hike in one day but there are several good camping spots available at the lake. The trail is well maintained and easy to follow.

This is a fabulous easy hike, the last little bit before the peak was a bit burley but still a blast. This is one of my favorite hikes so far.

The bugs everyone complaining about? they are everywhere in Washington so wear bug repellent.

PLEASE keep dogs on leash, it's upsetting to get charged by unruly dogs, it concerns me for the wildlife nearby.

The road up is long and crappy but I've seen worse, go slow and use caution the rocks are sharp and I could see a tire getting popped easily.

Epic views and ever changing scenery. The Wonderland takes you through subalpine meadows, old growth forests, over talus fields and raging glacial rivers. Challenging elevation gains and losses, I think there might be 10 feet of flat path on the whole trail! Challenging terrain in places and smooth forest path in others. Snow crossings, sketchy washout sections. Always, ALWAYS check trail conditions report before heading out, especially to see if bridges are in and never underestimate the danger of the water crossings, never ford alone. Be prepared to change plans or bail out if you cannot cross safely. Campsites all have backcountry privy and bear poles. Cache points at Sunrise, Longmire and Mowich, and abundant water sources make it easy to travel light. Trail is well marked and traveled.

I read the reviews before we went and knew ahead of time about the road up. Having an anxious dog who needs to see everything, the ride up was pretty brutal. But, as soon as we got on the trail itself, it was pretty easy going and the views were awesome. I cannot express enough how important it is to leash your dogs though. Even if they are well behaved, you never know what can happen with other approaching dogs/people. It is definitely better to be safe, rather than sorry.

Beautiful! Great hike! Bugs were particularly bad this time.. take bug repellent and spray it on a few times on the way up.. you will
sweat it off..can't sit on the rocks behind the shelter completely covered and swarming with flying ants & bees. This hike is worth it regardless of the steep spots very rewarding!!

This is a decent hike, it's not very long but it's steep at times. It took me exactly 1 hour to climb up with some water and snack breaks and only 40 min down. The views are great but would be best on a clear day (there was cloud cover when i went). Bring bug spray, the horseflies are out trying to make new friends. :D

This was a pleasant experience in total but moderate probably doesn’t do this hike Justice. About half way through the hike it gets steep and doesn’t let up at any point. The summit is crazy dangerous and kids need to be careful at all times. The view from the top is amazing and erases all of the negative thoughts gathered while making the trek. The horse flies are out in force so bring repellent and apply it amply before you leave the car.

The road is very rocky and there's a lot of huge potholes. It is not advisable if your car is not fit for off-road driving. The view of the cascades and the lakes are amazing. And the fields of wildflowers were beautiful. However, the bugs were insanely ANNOYING! The bugs will constantly swirm around you and the horse fly bites stung.

on Sheep Lake Trail

Beautiful trail, we went last week. Lots of wild flowers and peaceful lake setting.

Went on a very hot Sunday, mid-morning. Met a few hikers on their way down and a few groups at the lake. Took our teenage kids and dog and we all enjoyed it, especially a little wade in the cold lake. Bring sunscreen - a large portion of the train
Is in the sun. There were A LOT of bugs! Unfortunately bugs love me and I ended up with bites everywhere. Seems like I faired the worst of my family though.

If I had a favorite shade of blue, Summit Lake would be it. A nice gentle hike through the woods with lots of shade, leading up to a gorgeous (and freezing!) alpine lake. Take the loop around the lake for an amazing view at the summit overlooking Mt. Rainier and the water below.

We went to the right on the loop, which was a very gradual ascent. We took the other way down, and that was much rockier and steeper, but still doable at a slower pace. The bugs are NO JOKE!

We only saw a handful of other people along the trail and had the lake to ourselves once we made it down to the beach. The trail that leads to the lake will provide an access point to the water, albeit rocky. If you're looking for more of a beach feel, about a quarter of the way to the right on the lake loop, some side trails wind down towards the water. Again, it's a steep climb, so walk carefully!

And for the road: Yikes. It's exceptionally rocky and filled with giant potholes the entire length. We did pop a tire on our Jeep Wrangler, and had a spare, but no jack. Luckily, we were able to drive up onto a rock and balance the weight to change the tire. If you do venture to the trailhead in a vehicle, make sure you had both of those things so you're not stranded! We didn't get cell phone reception until we hit pavement again, so arranging a tow truck is highly unlikely.

Not worth the drive up

beautiful lake and views from peak above lake. Not worth the access road drive for a 1 hour hike.

The road is just as bad as advertised. Most of it is spent deciding whether to go over the large rocks on one side of the road or through the washed out ruts on the other side. I thought that it probably wouldn't be much worse than the road to Mowich Lake but I was wrong.

The hike itself is fairly enjoyable and the view from the peak overlooking the lake and Mt Rainier is fantastic.

Overall, I probably wouldn't do it again as there are other hikes with just as good of a payoff without the awful road to get to them.

This hike isn’t very long, but gets pretty steep in areas. Not in the best shape currently so it was definitely difficult. The view at the end is beyond worth it, though. Absolutely breathtaking views of Rainier and the surrounding area.

This was a fun family hike with the kids 8 & 10. We made it to the lake in about 1:20 with a few stops on the way. This is a very flat hike with just a couple short climbs. The lake had lots of small fish jumping but they weren’t biting our bait. Flies would probably do well. About half the hike was in direct sunshine so be sure to bring sunblock. Bug spray too for around the lake.

I’m intimidated by elevation gain and had been sitting on my butt recovering from surgery for 2 weeks when my boyfriend decided to drag me out on this hike. I thought I was going to die but the pay off is worth it. I want to go back to see the sunset there!

Short, steep hike. Views are beautiful but can be intimidating.

My favorite hike this year. Breathtaking panoramic views. To the you can see Mt. Adams, , further south is Mt Hood & you can see the crater of Mt. St. Helens. Look straight down & you will see Cora Lake. I would advise wearing proper hiking shoes, you'll be scrambling a little to get to the tower. Bring bug spray, the flies are no joke!! I'm pretty sure they got a weeks worth of meals from me.

I was expecting that it would be tough for me, but I knew that it would be worth it once we reached the top! It didn't disappoint. Majestic view! It was a clear day, so the view was breathtaking.

This a definite moderate to bordering on hard in some spots. But with every step I knew I was going to be able to see the most breathtaking view of my life. I was not wrong. Mt. Rainer, Adams, St. Helens and Hood could all be seen today. Never in my life have ever had the privilege of looking upon all of those majestic peaks at once. Do not go if there is a hint of cloud cover. You will miss everything that makes High Rock worth every step.

Bring bug spray. The flies are think and aggressive.

The 8 year ol d grandson could not get over how pristine everything was. This hike whooped my butt. That is a whooping I’ll take to see that kind of glory.
