Walking

Nice hike around Petra - don’t fall for the locals telling you that you absolutely need a guide. You can walk the trail yourself for free.

HikingGreat!No shade

YES! LOVE this trail! Must go from Little Petra to Petra. You avoid the crowd at The Monastery and you'll see people struggling going up the stairs and even taking donkeys as you take a nice stroll down hill towards Petra. It's hot, bring water.

started this trail at sunrise with a guide. took 4.5 hours and covered about 9 miles (according to my garmin), with breaks. steep down hill at the beginning, and relatively flat otherwise. very pretty, but not a lot of variation in terms of scenery.

Great walk through the desert. Not signposted but just follow the stacks of rocks. The temple is nice but the view is ever nicer.

Hiking

Great trail, if you can start the trail from the back coming in at the monastery and ending at the treasury.

Hiking

Weather was perfect at highs 67. Easy to moderately hard hiking depending on what trails you take. The main route to end and back is easy, before the steps. The 800+ steps at the end to reach the monastery can be intense for some but slow and easy wins the race. Can’t say enough of it’s history, archeology, mix of East/west and north/south trade influences, and the amazing engineering feets. You need a good two days to see the majority of all the areas, but one full day to complete the main trail. My most favorite exploration ever! I just gave it a 4 because of the amount of people there in a day.

This is a monumental experience to hike in Petra. The natural beauty and history make it surreal.

The first part is quite steep down (starting from Dana), the rest is fairly flat / with a bit of ups and downs. However, it's a very long trail with little shade. Make sure you have enough drinking water + insect spray (there we're very annoying flies that drove us crazy). If you arrive at thé ecolodge, you can have a fresh drink. The 4WD back costs 45 JOD. This makes sense, because you have you drive all the way down by Little Petra.

We did this trail on our own, without a guide. You shouldn't do the first part of the trail - it is steep climbing and not clear where to go. Just follow the jeep road, which starts on the left before the entrance of Little Petra. It's easy hiking (in the sun, though!) and this map helps you take to stay on track. You can do this by foot or by 4WD. The end is by foot & steps, afterwards it gets a bit trickier, but not too hard. Enjoy!

The archaeological sites are impressive but it's so crowded and there's so many people trying to sell you things that it takes away from it.
