Walking

Nice hike around Petra - don’t fall for the locals telling you that you absolutely need a guide. You can walk the trail yourself for free.

started this trail at sunrise with a guide. took 4.5 hours and covered about 9 miles (according to my garmin), with breaks. steep down hill at the beginning, and relatively flat otherwise. very pretty, but not a lot of variation in terms of scenery.

Great walk through the desert. Not signposted but just follow the stacks of rocks. The temple is nice but the view is ever nicer.

Great trail, if you can start the trail from the back coming in at the monastery and ending at the treasury.

Hiking

Weather was perfect at highs 67. Easy to moderately hard hiking depending on what trails you take. The main route to end and back is easy, before the steps. The 800+ steps at the end to reach the monastery can be intense for some but slow and easy wins the race. Can’t say enough of it’s history, archeology, mix of East/west and north/south trade influences, and the amazing engineering feets. You need a good two days to see the majority of all the areas, but one full day to complete the main trail. My most favorite exploration ever! I just gave it a 4 because of the amount of people there in a day.

This is a monumental experience to hike in Petra. The natural beauty and history make it surreal.

The archaeological sites are impressive but it's so crowded and there's so many people trying to sell you things that it takes away from it.

I did Petra twice in 2004 and 2005, it was awesome! Unbelievable how such a city could be hidden from the world for so long. Indiana Jones made it popular, but the treasury is not what TV portrays it.. Loved it..

I have done this trail many times. It starts in the village of Dana and ends in Fenan. Beautiful all year round but netter avoid hot summer days as the trail is exposed and does not offer any real shelter from the sun. Always have enough water with you.

Petra is magnificent. 5 stars for the views. Be sure to walk to the Treasury and continue on to the Monastery. Went in late June-it's hot! Pack plenty of water. Terrain isn't too hard, it's just a lot of steps to the Monastery. The walk to the Treasury is evenly paved with a gradual incline.

It is a bit of a walk and the 800 steps will leave you a little tired, but it is worth the trek all the way to the Monastery from the entrance. You will see the Treasury, the theater. and a temple along the way. Bring water, wear comfortable but durable shoes, and enjoy the area. Don't forget to climb up past the Monastery to get an evening higher view of the area.

Woweeee. This was a butt kicker. We took our sweet time looking at everything else and then decided last minute to hike to the monastery at the end of the trail. HOT. Don't do this the way we did it. Get there very early and head straight to the monastery. You won't regret it!
