We went from the Kudoyama station to Koyasan, where we were staying overnight. It is a breathtakingly beautiful and historic pilgrimage route. To get to the first choishi (stone marker), you will walk through a temple and up a large set of stairs. Keep going. I do not recommend this trail when it is raining. We went in late April and if it is raining, the trail becomes a rocky/muddy stream you will have to scramble. We saw crabs and frogs in the stream. There are various points where you can join/ leave the trail from different train stops after Kudoyama, but I do not recommend leaving the trail as the downhill path can be quite steep and muddy.

Long traverse through forest older than the founding of the United States of America, complete with vertically orientated grave-stone cemetaries. Unforgettable, moss and incense abundant!

Pleasant, easy going trail. Paths are very well maintained. All forest area, mostly shade. We came across 4 other groups of hikers in total (May). A few picknick sites along the way. WARNING: there is no public transport available from the end point back to the trail head. A taxi costs about JPY7000. Head out early if you want to walk out and back, this will probably take about 5 hours. Convenience shops for lunch etc are available at the end point.
